Philippe,

You should get automatic shielding in v10.02, although I took a look at the
county file in question and there were a few strange naming issues that
caused some of the interstate names to not be automatically recognized so
they weren't all shielded. I was able to fix that though.

What you can't get in Global Mapper is different shields for different
states. You just get interstate and US highway shielding and a base circle
shield for numbered state highways. There isn't any way to add custom
shields if you need custom shields for each state.

Thanks,

Mike

Subject: [global_mapper] Re: How to display US intersate shields?

I am using Global Mapper V10.02

I'd like to get some understanding how Global Mapper displays/links these
shields - especially if it's done automatically...

So far the template pattern I've seen is limited to a simple circle....you
can try the "All Line" shapefile located at:
http://www2.census.gov/cgi-bin/shapefiles2009/county-files?county=06081

I am trying to reproduce the original shields: US interstate freeways,
state-specific shields (NV, CA etc) - and to be honest I was not expecting
Global Mapper to be able to automatically insert the right shield...

My first area of research was to seek if additional shapefiles were needed
to mimick the various shields found around the country. Several customers
have expressed the wish to see "actual" shields represented on our
documents.

Thanks for your help and guidance.

Philippe

Subject: Global Mapper v12.01 Available - Adds 10m NED and OSM/TMS Source Access!
global_mapper
Send Email Send Email

Numerous significant enhancements and bug fixes have been made to Global Mapper
for this release. The most significant changes are described below:

- Added built-in access to 1/3rd arc second (~10m resolution) US NED terrain
data using the File->Download Online Imagery/Data menu command.
- Added option to export tiles conforming to the OSM (OpenStreetMaps) and TMS
(Tile Map Service) standards for tile naming and zoom levels.
- Added support for adding new custom OSM/TMS online tile sources on the
File->Download Online Imagery/Data dialog.
- Added support for exporting loaded data to BSB Marine Chart format files.
- Added ability to improve display of 3D view by selecting the size of the
terrain and texture layers to use when displaying the 3D view and also
interpolating view of data draped from main map view. You can increase the
terrain and texture sizes to get a more detailed (but slower) display.
- Added option to create area features from equal colors/elevations in any
loaded raster/elevation layer by right-clicking on it in the Control Center and
selecting the new option to do so. This is useful for things like extracting
vector coverages from something like a land use/cover raster image, like NLCD
data.
- Updated watershed analysis to allow finding the drainage areas that drain to a
selected point as well as to trace the flow leaving selected points.
- Added support for using overview layers from Erdas Imagine .img files when
rendering, greatly speeding rendering of very large .img files with overview
layers.

All of the other numerous changes are listed in the What's New document that is
displayed during installation.

Global Mapper v12.01 is a free upgrade for any existing registered v12 users.
Pricing for new Global Mapper v12 licenses is $349 US for a new single license,
$299 US per license for 2-19 licenses, and $249 US per license for 20 or more
licenses. Users with licenses for Global Mapper v11.xx can purchase an upgrade
to v12.01 for only $129 US per license. Site license pricing is also available
on request. As always, upgrades and new licenses can be purchased from the
Purchase page at http://www.globalmapper.com.

Let me know if you have any problems or questions.

Hello Mike,

The new "Create Area Features from Equal Values in Selected Layer" is a terrific
way to vectorize raster graphics. Is there any way to run this from a script?
I'd like to run it on a large chunk of an NLCDB area. The data is 30 meter
gridded and I run out of memory when I tile it to larger than 30 mile square
tiles.

Also, I haven't looked for it for a while, but I just noticed that the USGS DRGs
aren't on the imagery download menu any more. Does this mean I need to get them
as GeoPDFs?

Thanks,

Hilton

Hilton,

I will add a script command for the new feature and get back to you.

The USGS DRGs are still there, look under US or Popular data for the MRSMaps
(formerly TerraServer-USA) DRG source.

Mike

Hilton,

I have added a new GENERATE_EQUAL_VAL_AREAS script command to allow creating
equal-value areas from a script. I have placed a new build at
http://www.globalmapper.com/global_mapper12.zip with the change for you to
try. Simply download that file and extract the contents into your existing
v12.xx installation folder to give it a try. If you are using the 64-bit v12
version there is a new build at
http://www.globalmapper.com/global_mapper12_64bit.zip .

Here is the documentation for the new command:

GENERATE_EQUAL_VAL_AREAS

The GENERATE_EQUAL_VAL_AREAS command allows for the generation of areas for
regions of the same (or similar) color or elevation values fro a loaded
raster or elevation layer.

* FILENAME - specifies the filename of the already loaded layer from
which to generate the equal-value areas.
* ATTR_NAME - specifies the name to use for the attribute holding the
color or elevation that a particular area represents. If you leave this
attribute off then no value attribute will be saved with each area.
* AREA_TYPE - specifies the name of the area type to assign to the
area features. See the Area Styles tab of the Configuration dialog for a
list of available type names.
* COLOR_DIST - specifies how far from an exact match each color
channel of a color value must be to be considered the same. By default a
value of 0 is used which means exact matches only. If you want to break the
entire color range into say 4 ranges for each color channel, use something
like COLOR_DIST=32 as that would allow colors up to 32 away from each color
channel value to match to a color.
* ELEV_DIST - specifies how far from an exact match (in meters) each
value must be to be considered the same. By default a value of 0 is used
which means exact matches only. If you want to say split into area groups 10
meters in size, use ELEV_DIST=5. This would give you areas with values
between -5 and 5 meters, 5 and 15 meters, etc.
* GLOBAL_BOUNDS - specifies the bounds in units of the current global
projection. There should be 4 values in a comma-delimited list following the
parameter name. The values should be in order of minimum x, minimum y,
maximum x, maximum y.
* GLOBAL_BOUNDS_SIZE - specifies the bounds in units of the current
global projection. There should be 4 values in a comma-delimited list
following the parameter name. The values should be in order of minimum x,
minimum y, width in x, width in y.
* LAT_LON_BOUNDS - specifies the bounds in latitude/longitude degrees.
There should be 4 values in a comma-delimited list following the parameter
name. The values should be in order of westmost longitude, southernmost
latitude, easternmost longitude, northernmost latitude.
* LAYER_BOUNDS - specifies that the area generation should use the
bounds of the loaded layer(s) with the given filename. For example, to
generate contours to the bounds of the file "c:\test.tif", you would use
LAYER_BOUNDS="c:\test.tif". Keep in mind that the file must be currently
loaded.
* LAYER_BOUNDS_EXPAND - specifies that the operation should expand the
used LAYER_BOUNDS bounding box by some amount. The amount to expand the
bounding rectangle by should be specified in the current global projection.
For example, if you have a UTM/meters projection active and want to expand
the bounds retrieved from the LAYER_BOUNDS parameter by 100 meters on the
left and right, and 50 meters on the top and bottom, you could use
LAYER_BOUNDS_EXPAND="100.0,50.0". You can also specify a single value to
apply to all 4 sides, or supply 4 separate values in the order
left,top,right,bottom.

SAMPLE:

This sample will generate equal-elevation areas of size 20 meters (10 meters
on either side) from the specified DEM layer and store the elevation values
in an attribute named ELEV for each area feature.

GENERATE_EQUAL_VAL_AREAS FILENAME="C:\temp\export
test\blue_springs_4_quads.dem" ELEV_DIST=10.0 ATTR_NAME="ELEV"

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Thanks,

Mike

name. The values should be in order of westmost longitude, southernmost
latitude, easternmost longitude, northernmost latitude.
* LAYER_BOUNDS - specifies that the area generation should use the bounds of
the loaded layer(s) with the given filename. For example, to generate
contours to the bounds of the file "c:\test.tif", you would use
LAYER_BOUNDS="c:\test.tif". Keep in mind that the file must be currently
loaded.
* LAYER_BOUNDS_EXPAND - specifies that the operation should expand the used
LAYER_BOUNDS bounding box by some amount. The amount to expand the bounding
rectangle by should be specified in the current global projection.

Thanks,

Mike

DRGs

Hello Mike,

The new "Create Area Features from Equal Values in Selected Layer" is a
terrific way to vectorize raster graphics. Is there any way to run this from
a script? I'd like to run it on a large chunk of an NLCDB area. The data is
30 meter gridded and I run out of memory when I tile it to larger than 30
mile square tiles.

Also, I haven't looked for it for a while, but I just noticed that the USGS
DRGs aren't on the imagery download menu any more. Does this mean I need to
get them as GeoPDFs?

Thanks,

Hilton

Thanks, Mike.

The scripting works fine, with one little caveat. When a component of an RGB
pixel definition has a leading zero the zero gets replaced with a space in the
COLOR attribute definition. In order to get the script or a search to work this
means that there need to be two spaces in front of a two digit component and one
space in front of a three digit component. Took me a while to figure this out.

I have a series of scanned  rasterized geological maps and corresponding Dems.
My current GM ver 6.09 allows me to to load the raster geological map and a
digital elevation model of the same area.I manually pick Lat and Lon points on a
geological contact and then I can export a Vector xyz  file if I have a dem
loaded as an underlying layer. The method works but is very tedious as I must
pick individual points along a contact which can often consist of over a
thousand points, I would like to able to continually trace the contact contour
from beginning to end and then export the vectorized xyz data.

Vic,

In Global Mapper v11 and later you can use the trace mode in the Digitizer Tool
to draw a line by just tracing it without clicking at each vertex location. Once
you create the line with that, you can right-click in the Digitizer Tool with
that line selected and choose to option to generate a path profile along the
line. You can then save that out to a XYZ file from the File menu on the path
profile dialog.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Hello Mike,

I've got my generate areas based on equal color values script working pretty
well now, but I'd like to be able to delete all objects with an "Unknown Area
Type" after I've modified the areas I am interested in. The scripting reference
for Edit_Vector suggests this may be possible, but I can't see how to make
DELETE_FEATURES or DELETE_DUPLICATES delete by type.

Also, I'd like to make the color of the final set of objects to be the color of
the default type, not the RGB colors they have in the original raster.

Is there any way to do either of these things work in a script?

Thanks,

Hilton

Hilton,

Try using the command below to delete all areas with a feature type of
"Unknown Area Type":

EDIT_VECTOR COMPARE_STR="<Feature Type>=Unknown Area Type"
DELETE_FEATURES=YES

To reset the styles, you could export the data to a Shapefile, then load
that back in. Since Shapefiles don't hold style information (but do hold the
types), this will reset the styles back to the default for the type.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Des,

Currently all of the text for a single point will export at the same origin
for DWG export. The current work-around would be to split and have a
separate point feature for each line of text, although I can see how this
might be impractical if you have a lot of points.

Thanks,

Mike

You can do that using the Search->Search and Replace menu command, just
search on 'RT' and replace with nothing.

When I create a new point, UTM or geographic projection and wsgs84 datum, with
coordinate conversor tool, at outpout coordinates always save it with a small
error. Then if I change(location tab on feature information)and enter again the
correct coordinates it saves the point correctly.

How large is the difference that you are seeing when you save? I just tried
this and got the same results for the coordinates of the new point as I saw
on the coordinate convertor dialog.

Thanks,

Mike

I`m sorry. I din't realize that the Datum in coordinate conversion was placed
different than datum in projection configuration.
Now all is ok.
Thanks

Hi all,

I want to copy an attribute and recalculate the values (divide by 100 and
multiply by -1) .
How to do this?

There isn't currently a way to do this in Global Mapper, you would need to
export your data to something like a Shapefile, then open the DBF in Excel
and create the new attribute and apply the mathematical operation, then load
the Shapefile back into Global Mapper.

Thanks,

Mike

Thanks Mike.

I wanted to avoid the Excel 2007 maximum of 1048576 rows limitation.

Danny,

Hmmm, are the values all numeric? If so you could go to the Options dialog
for the layer and set the elevation attribute to come from whatever value
that you want to copy, then export to a Simple ASCII Text file and on the
Point Offset/Scale tab provide a scale factor of -0.01 for the Z values. You
should then get an ELEVATION attribute added with the value multiplied by
-0.01. You can then load that back in and rename the ELEVATION attribute to
whatever you need.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Thanks,

Mike
