I'm a very contented user of Global Mapper 6 and have been using it successfully
mainly with SRTM data.
I have recently switched to using the revised SRTM data from CGIAR - version 4,
and now find that when exporting raster/elevation data from this, GM6 is giving
some erroneous values. Specifically in river estuaries, it blocks off the river
mouth by exporting elevation values of several metres instead of zero. This is
in spite of the fact that the screen display shows the coastline correctly.
I'm not yet very familiar with the CGIAR data but it seems that it is different
than the original SRTM files in not giving zero values for the sea.
Is this issue something you are aware of?
Will an upgrade to the latest version of GM fix it? I have downloaded a trial
copy to test, but of course it will not allow exports.
I am otherwise very happy with version 6, but I am prepared to buy the new
version if I know it will work with the revised data.

Richard,

Does the CGIAR SRTM data show the values of several meters or is it only in
the export results from Global Mapper? I would typically expect the CGIAR
data to be as good or better than the base SRTM data.

Thanks,

Mike

It show perfectly well on the mapper display. It's only the exported data that
is incorrect. I can send you a sample output if that would help.

Richard,

Thanks for the file. I think the issue is that the CGIAR data has the ocean
marked as invalid rather than zero, so you don't get points in the XYZ
export there. When you grid the data by default those no-data areas will
fill in using nearby data, but you really don't want that. There are a
couple of ways to fix this, but the best is to select the CGIAR layer(s) in
the Control Center prior to export, press Options, then go to the Adjust
Elevations tab and specify to replace void samples with 0. Then your ocean
areas will be set to a valid value of 0 and should export as expected.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Thanks,

Mike

Ganesh,

The TMS standard defines the tiling, including zoom level, so if you could
modify it then it would no longer be standard and TMS-compliant readers
wouldn't be able to use it. You should be able to choose the maximum zoom
level that you want to generate. The default should maintain the full
resolution of all loaded data.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the quick response.

Well, looks like you have misunderstood. The resolution (zoom level) is fixed
only for OSM, Google, Bing etc. As for the generic TMS is concerned, we should
be able to define our own resolution;

http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Tile_Map_Service_Specification

The issue with OSM, Bing, Google they work only with Spherial Mercator or the
EPGS 4326, 90013 etc. But, TMS, we should be able to use with other projections
including TM, where we set the base resolution of the tiles.

One should be able to use the generated TMS tiles with Tile Cache and use Open
Layers for any web map application.

Thats the reason why I asked for custom resolution setting for TMS.

Thanks
Ganesh

Darn things were a lot simpler when TMS was just OSM with a slightly different

       Vic,

In Global Mapper v11 and later you can use the trace mode in the Digitizer Tool
to draw a line by just tracing it without clicking at each vertex location. Once
you create the line with that, you can right-click in the Digitizer Tool with
that line selected and choose to option to generate a path profile along the
line. You can then save that out to a XYZ file from the File menu on the path
profile dialog.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

I have a series of scanned rasterized geological maps and corresponding Dems.
My current GM ver 6.09 allows me to to load the raster geological map and a
digital elevation model of the same area.I manually pick Lat and Lon points on a
geological contact and then I can export a Vector xyz file if I have a dem
loaded as an underlying layer. The method works but is very tedious as I must
pick individual points along a contact which can often consist of over a
thousand points, I would like to able to continually trace the contact contour
from beginning to end and then export the vectorized xyz data.

Vic,

I'm not quite sure what you are asking? Do you want to create a series of

point features spaced along some line feature? If so you can do this in the

Digitizer Tool, but you will need v11 or later to do so, the option doesn't

existing in v6.09.

You can use the Search->Search by Attributes menu command to find features
matching some criteria, then mark them as deleted so they won’t display by
default.

You can use the Quick Point Creator option from the right-click menu in the
Digitizer Tool to allow quickly placing point features with a particular
symbol/type without having to ok each one.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Subject: RE: [global_mapper] Vectorize Geological Contacts

Mike

I have a series of scanned rasterized geological maps and corresponding Dems. My
current GM ver 6.09 allows me to to load the raster geological map and a digital
elevation model of the same area.I manually pick Lat and Lon points on a
geological contact and then I can export a Vector xyz file if I have a dem
loaded as an underlying layer.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Thanks,

Mike

Hi, I'm seeking help with importing a terrain file to an exact location and so
that it sits vertically correct in the data.
The terrain was originally exported from Global Mapper as a terragen, the
bounds were cropped to a vector quad I've set up in GM. I did some modelling
work on the quad and now I need to reimport it to the same place.
I've set spot heights at various locations as well so that I know what the
height of the terrain should be at those points.

I was considering exporting the coordinates info of the quad bounds and using
that to rectify the terrain once in GM.
I'm using GM 10.

Any suggestions would be welcome,
Thanks.

Monks,

Global Mapper doesn't support importing the Terragen terrain format. Did you
save the raw data in any other formats?

Thanks,

Mike

Hi Mike, I did intend to say that I'm importing it as a .bt.

It's strange how a terrain can change. I was careful not to alter the boundary
height of the terrain when I was modelling it.

I've noticed that some of my data layers are in different projections...Some
are in geo lat long, others are in UTM N 31.
The underlying terrain is in geo, while the imported one is in UTM..I'm
guessing that this would alter the sync of terrains right? Surely. In addition,
I'm manually rectifying the imported terrains to vector quads, which themselves
may be in different projections...

Is it possible to change all of the layers to the same projection easily?

Thanks,

Monks,

There could certainly be minor changes if your data has been reprojected as
there would have to be resampling done on export. The default resampling
method done for elevation data would be bilinear interpolation. The changes
should be very minor though so long as you kept the default sample spacing
as that should maintain the full export resolution.

You can easily just set your view/export projection on the Projection tab of
the Configuration dialog to change the projection for all loaded data sets,
then export them to a new file in that projection.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Thanks,

Mike

Yes, indeed, very minor. The differences are quite large. I suspect the terrain
was changed in some way outside of GM, even though I intended not to.
I'll try the reprojection, but I'll probably have to rescue that in another
way.

On another note, I'm rectifying the terrain I imported as a bt. When I zoom
right in there is blue band up the right hand edge of the terrain. Any ideas
what this is?

Export of tiled maps is a lot quicker by using several instances of GM.
So I open the same workspace several time and export the tiles into one
folder. It then very often occurs that GM stops telling me

---------------------------
TIFFOpen Error
---------------------------
Path\xyz.tif: Cannot open, the file is already opened in an application.

I click OK and get the next error messsage:

---------------------------
Global Mapper
---------------------------
Unable to open file Path\xyz.tif for writing.

I click OK and GM continues.
Is it possible to avoid this unnecessary message?

Greina,

If you don't wait to recurse sub-directories you would need to just use the
'Add Files' command instead of 'Add Directory' and just select the files
that you want to add.

Mike,

Yes, I did.
I think the reason for the error message is, that two instances try to
save the same file name at the same second. As my exports run with up to
8 or so instances the problem comes out after some minutes and again and
again.

I know, but this is less comfortable. Windows explorer then needs some
minutes to collect e.g. 20.000 files whilst "add directory" starts in a
second.

Greina,

I have updated the map catalog dialog to prompt you to recurse or not. I
have placed a new build at http://www.globalmapper.com/global_mapper12.zip
with the change for you to try. Simply download that file and extract the
contents into your existing v12.xx installation folder to give it a try. If
you are using the 64-bit v12 version there is a new build at
http://www.globalmapper.com/global_mapper12_64bit.zip .

Thanks,

Mike

Mike

I know, but this is less comfortable. Windows explorer then needs some
minutes to collect e.g. 20.000 files whilst "add directory" starts in a
second.

Greina,

I think I've got things updated so you should no longer get the error
message if skipping existing tiles and an open fails because the file is
already open in another application. I have placed a new build at
http://www.globalmapper.com/global_mapper12.zip with the change for you to
try. Simply download that file and extract the contents into your existing
v12.xx installation folder to give it a try. If you are using the 64-bit v12

Mike,

Yes, I did.
I think the reason for the error message is, that two instances try to
save the same file name at the same second. As my exports run with up to
8 or so instances the problem comes out after some minutes and again and
again.

Mike, I've uploaded the .bt to the root folder of the ftp. "Ered Nimrais quad".
There's a band along the top edge as well.

Monks,

Do you know what software created the .bt file? It appears to have a row of
very tiny values and a column of very tiny values on the edges. In addition
the Y direction was flipped with the bottom having a larger Y coordinate
that the top.

Thanks,

Mike
