Hi All;
I was wondering if the "update" to 5 for current registered users of
version 4 will be independently installable, or will it be
an "overlay" installation to go on top of 4?
(i.e. if needed to reinstall or new machine, does one need to install
Ver 4.x first or will 5 be standalone for the upgrade price?)
Thanks!
Tim,
It can be installed standalone. If you are using the upgrade
registration code, you will then be asked to enter your v4.xx
registration code to validate that you are eligible to use the upgrade
code.

Global Mapper Software LLC is pleased to announce the availability of
the second beta version of Global Mapper v5.00 for download at
http://www.globalmapper.com/global_mapper5_setup_beta.exe .
Several significant additions have been made since the release of
Global Mapper v4.78 as well as since the first beta of v5.00. The
most significant addition is the Digitizer Tool (found on the
toolbar and under the Tools menu). Another major addition is the
ability to rectify imagery that has not yet been geo-positioned.
Another major enhancement is the ability to pan around the map just
by moving the cursor near the edge of the map view and clicking to
move that direction. This allows easy viewing of map data regardless
of what tool you are currently using.
The Digitizer tool allows users to modify existing vector (area,
line, and point) features as well as create new ones by drawing them
with the mouse. To use the tool, simple left click or drag a box
with the mouse to select vector features, then right click to bring
up a list of available options (i.e. move, edit attributes, etc.).
You can also right click with nothing selected to start creating new
area, line, and point features. All changes and additions will be
saved in Global Mapper workspaces and can also be exported to any of
the vector formats supported by Global Mapper, such as shapefiles
and DXF files.
You can also now save measurements created with the Measure tool by
right clicking and selected the new Save Measurement option.
The ability to rectify imagery is new in this beta. It is still has
a lot of work to be done to it, but you can use it to rectify TIFF
and JPG imagery. To do this, simply load the .tif or .jpg file as
normal and you will be asked if you want to rectify the image. After
that, the imager rectification dialog will appear allowing you to
enter group control points and specify the projection to use. You
enter ground control points by zooming into the Zoomed Image view
and clicking on a pixel location, then entering the ground
coordinates associated with that imager in the appropriate fields
and pressing the Add GCP button. When you have entered all of your
GCPs (at least two are required), press OK and the image will
rectify itself and load into the view. At that point you can export
it to another format if you'd like.
In the final release of v5.0 (planned for this weekend), you will be
able to load reference imagery for selecting ground control points
(GCPs). You will also be able to select which rectification method
(i.e. linear (2 GCPs), affine (3+ GCPs), polynomial (4+ GCPs), or
triangulation (8+ GCPs)) you wish to use. Currently the best method
given the number of GCPs entered will be used. The triangulation
method will result in your GCPs staying exactly pinned down
where you placed them, rather than using a best-fit method for the
whole image. The triangulation method is not implemented in this
beta. In addition, the estimated error will be displayed as you
enter the GCPs. Many more changes will likely be added as well,
including a File menu item for rectifying imagery several at a time.
Below I have provided an expiring registration key allowing you to
try out the full functionality of this beta for the next week, at
which time the final v5.00 release should occur. You can safely
install the beta next to your current version of Global Mapper and
continue to use both.

The web pages allowing you to purchase Global Mapper v5.00 licenses
should be available in the next day or two. There will be a post to
the Global Mapper Yahoo User's Group (see the link under the Help
menu in Global Mapper) when they are available.
Please let us know if you have any problems, questions, or comments.
Any feedback that you provide could very well be included in full
release of Global Mapper v5.00 in the next week or so.
Thanks,

How do I load jpg images which have a world file in V5? The only
apparent options available are manually rectifying them or not using
them, since the program won't look for the world file.
Mike
Mike,
Global Mapper v5 will still look for a world file for JPG imagery before
prompting you to manually rectify it. The world file must be in the same
directory as the JPG file, have the same base name, and have one of the
following extensions: .jpgw, .jpegw, .jgw, or .jgw.txt.
Previous versions of Global Mapper would ask the user to select a world
file if none of those world files could be found, but now the user will
be asked to manually rectify the image instead.
Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Thanks, that's it. The world files didn't have one of the proper

Global Mapper Software LLC is extremely pleased to announce the
availability of Global Mapper v5.00 for download at
http://www.globalmapper.com/global_mapper5_setup.exe . The most
significant additions in v5.00 are the Digitizer Tool (found on the
toolbar and under the Tools menu) and the Image Rectification
functionality.
The Digitizer tool allows users to modify existing vector (area,
line, and point) features as well as create new ones by drawing them
with the mouse. To use the tool, simple left click or drag a box

area, line, and point features. All changes and additions will be
saved in Global Mapper workspaces and can also be exported to any of
the vector formats supported by Global Mapper, such as shapefiles
and DXF files.
There is also a new File menu option for rectifying PNG, TIF, and
JPG imagery. This allows you to take any image in the aforementioned
formats and graphically georeference them. The results can then be
saved to any of the supported raster export formats, such as a fully
georeferenced GeoTIFF file.
You can also now save measurements created with the Measure tool by
right clicking and selected the new Save Measurement option.
See the What's New page at http://www.globalmapper.com for a
complete list of changes.
Pricing for Global Mapper v5.00 is $179 US for a new single license,
$159 US per license for 2-19 licenses, and $139 US per license for
20 or more licenses. Users with licenses for Global Mapper v4.xx
can purchase an upgrade to v5.00 for $79 US per license. Site
license pricing is also available on request.
Please let us know if you have any problems, questions, or comments.

I am trying to import pre-recorded GPS track files into Global Mapper and draw in different colors. The Global Mapper 5 Beta 2 on Windows 2000 was used.
The track files are in ASCII format. I used Open Generic ASCII Text File(s) option from the File menu, as Tim O'Donoghue suggested, and received the following message:
Generic ASCII files do not contain projection information
Hello Wei;
The way I have done that is to match the projection of my currently loaded
data.
I mainly use data from Washington state, so it often ends up as UTM Zone
10 (or 11) and NAD27 or NAD83 (CONUS).
I hope that helps.

If you have your GPS in default mode, then
correct projection and datum would likely be Geographic/Arc Degrees/WGS84, as
all GPS receivers (that I know of) default to exporting coordinates in that
format. This is likely also the default selection in the projection selector
dialog, so you should just be able to hit ok.

Thanks for inputs from Paul Pingrey, Tim O'Donoghue, and Mike from Global Mapper Tech Support. I can draw tracks now.
The summary of my procedures is as follows:
My GPS track files are in ASCII format. Each file has 3 columns and they are in order of latitude, longitude, and altitude. The Global Mapper v5.0 beta2 is used.
To draw GPS tracks:
(1) Use Open Generic ASCII Text File(s) to import GPS text files.
(2) In the Generic ASCII Text File Import Options dialog, select Y/Northing/Latitude Coordinate First for my case. Then hit OK.
(3) The next window opens and asks you to select the projection/datum. Just hit OK.
(4) The next new dialog is Select Projection. The correct projection and datum would likely be Geographic/Arc Degrees/WGS84. It is the options I used for my data. This is likely also the default selection in the projection selector dialog, so you should just be able to hit ok.
To change color for each individual line:
(1) Select Digitizer from Tools menu
(2) Left click on the line you want to change (the line becomes a dashed line). Then right click and select Edit Line Feature. Go to Feature Style and select Specify Style to Use When Rendering Feature in dialog. A Select Line Style dialog will be open, and you can change line width, style, and color there. Hit ok to close all dialog windows. Left click to end the Digitizer and the line turns to your setting.

Mike,
Is the 8192 pixel max size for a jpg file (export) hard-wired in
to the jpg format, or is there some other reason for it? I work with
a lot of HUGE files, and having a pixel size only limited by my
machine's ability to swallow it would be excellent. I believe that I
remember that there is a limit, but maybe at some later time you
could explore the possibility of whether PNG or TIFF might not be
size-limited in the same way.
Thanks,
Frank

A little known use of GM and GPS tracks is error-correcting in GPS
trail-map-making. Once you have reduced your NMEA data to 5-meter, 10-
meter, or whatever resolution you plan to use, you can use Global
Master to visually inspect it. You can zoom and pan and hover your
cursor over the glitched-up data-point, and the readout on the status
bar will tell you exactly where it is, saving you LOTS of effort.
I've used this method heavily in GM 4.x, and it really helps.

Frank,
I assume that you're referring to the limits when using the
File->Capture Screen To Image option correct? Those limits are actually
imposed to prevent problems with some video cards rendering to images
that are too large. I should probably relax those and just warn the
user.
If you use the normal File->Export Raster and Elevation->Export JPG
command, the limit is 65K x 65K pixels, which is the JPG format limit.

Hello,
I recently updated the description of Global Mapper 5 at Digital
Grove: http://www.digitalgrove.net/ (see the Toolbox page). I'd like
to add a section on "Global Mapper Tips". If any you Global Mapper
users have ideas to share in a tips section, I'd be happy to include
them (with credit to you).

I just upgraded from version 4 to 5. I'm trying to create a new
overlay showing various bicycle routes in my county. I have created a
couple of custom line styles to indicate whether a particular route
segment is a "bike lane" or "side path" (for example).
The problem is that whenever I export the created vector data, some
style information is lost. Both dlg-o and shp appear to save the new
vectors as "unclassified line feature". MapInfo format almost works,
but it appears to save line width and color with the vector and will
not allow you to pick up the default attributes.
I guess my question is, is it possible to create a custom line style
and then expect to share the new style with some other GIS program?
-James
James,
Unfortunately there's not much that can be done to maintain your custom
line style in some types. The DLG-O format supports only a limited set
of attribute codes designed specifically for the USGS DLG data set, it
has no way of describing the line style to draw features with. Likewise,
the Shapefile format also does not provide a standard way to specify
what style that vector features should be rendered with.
As you noticed, some of the other supported export formats do support at
least some limited style information. In particular the MapInfo and DXF
formats support some line style information.
Any vector data saved to a Global Mapper workspace will retain any
custom line styling, but of course that workspace can only be opened
back into Global Mapper.
Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Tim,
I'm not sure why the image is blurred there, perhaps a secret government
installation at the top of Mt. Everest? :) Seriously, perhaps the data
set didn't have as good of resolution in that area for some reason,
although I can't say what that reason might be.
Until the SRTM 90-m worldwide data set is finally released (perhaps by
the end of this year?), the only other source of relatively high
resolution elevation data for that part of the world is the ASTER DEM
data set. It is 30-m data, although it does not have full coverage. I
would suggest taking a look at

download ASTER DEM data in GeoTIFF DEM format for ingestion by Global

Thanks for the (as always!) amazingly fast response.
There's a similar, though more local and random problem with both
ASTER and SRTM - clouds! I've got som bits and pieces of areas near
Everest, mainly via ASTER GeoTIFF DEMs, but never a clear shot of the
whole area. I don't suppose the TIFFs are stackable in Global Mapper
so that if I get enough different passes I could eend up with a
complete set of data .... Hehe - that would be almost too easy.

Tim,
The GeoTIFF DEMs are indeed stackable. I would suggest loading the least
resolute data first, then load the higher resolution data. Any holes in
the high-res data will allow the low-res data to show through, so you'll
get a complete picture with the best available data everywhere.

so that if I get enough different passes I could eend up with a
complete set of data .... Hehe - that would be almost too easy.

Tim,
I'm not sure why the image is blurred there, perhaps a secret government
installation at the top of Mt.
would suggest taking a look at
http://www.terrainmap.com/rm23.html#ASTERPROC for instructions to
download ASTER DEM data in GeoTIFF DEM format for ingestion by Global
Mapper.

Description : Roughly in the center of this image is a blurred,

and why is it smudged in a nice quad? Does anyone know of a source for
reasonably high res. elevation data (100 meter? 200? 30? ) for Mount
Everest?

Well, Wee doggies!
On my way to ASTER land right now.
Thanks!
Tim,
The GeoTIFF DEMs are indeed stackable. I would suggest loading the least
resolute data first, then load the higher resolution data. Any holes in
the high-res data will allow the low-res data to show through, so you'll
get a complete picture with the best available data everywhere.

Hi Mike;

There are not currently a whole lot of
options available when printing from Global Mapper. The most you can do is set
up some title text to be displayed. However, you can use the File->Capture
Screen to Image command to save a high-res version of
the screen contents, and then use that graphics file (JPG, TIFF, PNG, or BMP)
in another publishing program to add whatever headers, etc. that you’d
like.
