Does anyone know where GM's icons are stored? I see a iconv.dll in
C:\Program Files\GlobalMapper6 which leads me to think they're wrapped
up in the DLL and we can't get to them.

I had assumed that I could add a reference in my VB .NET project to
GlobalMapperInterface.dll but I get a dialog that states in part, "A
reference to ...\GlobalMapperInterface.dll could not be added. This is
not a valid assembly or COM component. Only assemblies with extension
'dll' and COM components can be referenced. Please make sure that the
file is accessible, and that it is a valid assembly or COM component."

The site http://www.globalmapper.com/sdk.html does not state which
version of Visual Basic the SDK works with but since it specifically
states C# then I must assume VB .NET would be included since they are
both .NET languages.

Advice welcome.

Hi Mike
I think GM should have some more buttons on the menu bar/tool bar.
for example "fit to active layer" , "delete active layer"  and " unload all" for easy access.

David, I forgot comment that you must edit file custom_symbols.txt
and add new ones if you do it externally.
Inside GM symbols can be added by Configuration, Point Styles and Add
Symbol... button, then you choose the path where you have your symbols
and your new one and GM create custom_symbols.txt list automatically
and add it to appropiate directory.

I should clarify ... I know how to handle custom symbols, I'm talking
about the icons that are native to Global Mapper. I suspect that there
is no way to get to them for editing because they may be locked up in
iconv.dll or some other place.

Thank you for the new icons.

Mike,

I started adding icons and noticed this effect.

----- begin custom symbols.txt ------
"grntri","1_grntri.ico"
"redtri","1_redtri.ico"
"bludia","bludia.ico"
"bludot","1_bludot.ico"
"blusqr","1_blusqr.ico"
------ end ------------------------

When I add an icon {grntri.ico} with global mapper, GM copies the file
to 1_grntri.ico, If I edit the custom symbols.txt file manually, this
does not happen. {bludia.ico}

Dave,

The built-in point symbols are built directly into the global_mapper6.exe
file. There is not a way to edit them. You would have to use custom symbols
to get anything different than the built-in symbols added.

Dave,

The GlobalMapperInterface.dll is not, as VB says, an extension DLL or COM
component. Rather, it is a standard Windows DLL, just like kernel32.dll or
gdi32.dll. You cannot add standard Windows DLLs directly to a VB project
like a COM DLL, rather you have to make your own function declarations that
reference the DLL. This should work in any version of VB and we have had
several SDK users use the SDK from VB without any trouble.

Perhaps there are some VB programmers on the forum that can explain how to
call standard DLLs a bit better than myself.

Thanks,

Mike

Jim,

If you are going to manually edit the custom_symbols.txt file then you will
need to copy the .ico and .bmp files manually to the CustomSymbols folder.
Otherwise, Global Mapper has no way of knowing where to look for the .ico
and .bmp files since just a relative path is stored in the
custom_symbols.txt file.

Mike,

I did copy the symbols to custom symbols directory. What I was trying to
point out was: when I used GM to add a symbol, say red triangle, the GM
configuration shows redtri. But in reality GM copies redtri.ico to
1_redtri.ico and uses that file. So for every one I add, GM duplicates
the file. If I manually edit custom_symbols.txt to add bludia the file
is not duplicated.

This is not a problem, just a curiosity.

just like API calls. you need to know the name of the dll's exported
functions and subs and their respective arguments. i'd assume that's
included with the SDK documentation, though.

sorry if i'm stating the obvious here.

Hi,

As of GM 6.07, changing the type of Latitude and Longitude fields from plain Numeric with decimals to Float makes the opening of DBF in FoxPro 8 produce the error “The table is invalid”.

At least that is what I suppose is cause of the problem, if nothing else was changed.

In GM 6.05 everything was fine in this respect.

Please check.

Thank you.

Jim,
like you can see in your tree directory, you have thats icons before
yo say to gm that uses them, gm sees that this symbol is repeated
and make a new on with other name to avoid conflicts.

Andre,

Actually there was another change made in the DBF export that wasn’t documented but was related to that that has caused trouble with several programs. Try downloading the latest build from http://www.globalmapper.com/global_mapper6.zip and extract that over your existing installation to see if that fixes the problem.

Thanks,

Mike

Thank you.

Jorge,

That is correct, Global Mapper does check for files with the same name
already existing in the CustomSymbols folder, and if found a number if
prepended to make the filename unique.

Jim,
like you can see in your tree directory, you have thats icons before
yo say to gm that uses them, gm sees that this symbol is repeated
and make a new on with other name to avoid conflicts.

Saif,

The problem with those is there really no concept of an “active layer” in Global Mapper. You could easily have hundreds or thousands of different map files (layers) open and in view at a time, so how would you define what the active one was? The “unload all” could be added, but I’m afraid people might accidentally hit it. If you need quick access to that command just use the “Ctrl+U” shortcut.

Thanks,

Hi Mike

I think GM should have some more buttons on the menu bar/tool bar.

for example "fit to active layer" , "delete active layer"  and " unload all" for easy access.

I think like Mike, it is very easy "Ctrl+U" shortcut and a button is
a big risk however I think that the use of right click if slightly
exploited and Control Center window is sometimes a bother that we
need to use while a popup menu with some of the cursor tools will be
a very good solution, once used it dissapear.

I am using
DVD Browser Version 1.1 Copyright 2005, Outdoor Perspective
to browse/search for topo quads and opening them in
Global Mapper v 6.06

Works great, when you know the quad name, but how about moving to the
adjacent quad, when you don't know the name?
The UTM and Lat/Long are listed in the browser when you move the cursor
outside the quad, but the name of the adjacent quad is not apparent (At
least not to me).
Questions:
1) How to open/link multiple quads to produce a single map, at least on
the screen.
2) How to find what the adjacent quad name is. The file names don't
seem to be quad names. I've gone through the readme's provided with the
data, and it doesn't seem to answer my question

Global Mapper does a lot of the work for you in ref. to #1 below. File > Open
allows single or multiple files to be opened. If they're georeferenced, GM will
put them where they need to be.

Re #2 Digital Data Services / USGSQuads used to sell a $15 product
http://www.usgsquads.com/mapfinder.html called USGS Map Finder. I just looked
for it and found they have an online version but I didn't see any reference to
the standalone. The one I have is very useful and well made. I'll look into the
online one at some point.

Map Mart can be versy useful in finding 24K (and other) quads by browsing
online at http://www.mapmart.com. Also, http://seamless.usgs.gov also has a
layer that shows quads in various scales depending on your zoom level.

Try:

ftp://download1.geocomm.com/sd2/usgs_24kgrid.zip for a 2MB zipped SHP
file that has all the US quads. Open it with GM and you will see all the
quad names. If you open the overlay control center -> options -> get
feature name and change to MRC you will see the file naming conventions.
i.e. 34116-C6 = Rattlesnake Canyon.

The National Atlas used to have this, but I can no longer find it there.

You can also search the Geographic Names Information System at:
http://geonames.usgs.gov/gnishome.html as well as download gnis data for
each state that GM can use.

By saying "active layer" , I mean to say the last layer which was opened.as "ERDAS Imagine " has  "clear button" or  "clear all" button in its viewer.so whenever you press "clear" button , the last layer would be closed. You can prevent accidently pressing "unload all " button by adding a dialog like "do you really want to unload all Yes/no" .
However ctrl + u is good option which I was not knowing before.
Please tell me where are all these SHORT CUT KEYS written ?

John,

You could use the custom point symbol ability currently in place to create
an icon with an outline form for a summit so that you could see through the
icon. To get a transparent symbol you have to add a custom symbol from a
.ico file (not a .bmp) that has certain pixels marked as transparent.
Because of how Windows handles icons, the icon has to be a certain size
(16x16 I believe) so you can't make it as big as you might like.

There is not currently a way to make a balloon-type label without a lot of
work. The only approach that I can think of is to draw a balloon-shaped area
feature with the Digitizer Tool, then draw line features within that area
that have the labels that you want to display. This would probably only look
right at one given zoom scale though.

Thanks,

Mike

My problem:
I have a lot of maps with collar that I don't want to modify, they

it on Options,Customize Collar Bounds we don't need to crop and
export all maps one to one for later delete them, only to apply that

Mi problema:
Dispongo de muchos mapas que tienen recuadro y no deseo modificar
por ser los originales pero necesito unir algunos de ellos a
petición de mis clientes, cada vez es un area distinta. Bien, he

When you print to a PDF file all that Global Mapper sees is just another
printer and it sends the image of what it wants printed just like it would
to any other printer. So all that the "Print to PDF" print driver gets is a
single bitmap image with the print contents.

Global Mapper would have to add some kind of explicit PDF export option in
order to generate a PDF file with multiple layers. We currently don't have
any immediate plans to add such a feature.
