Subject: DEM value displayed in grid and contour lines
mapmansa
Send Email Send Email

When comparing contours generated from a DEM over an image e.g. an aerial
photo, I have noticed that at times contour lines follow a path that is not
consistent with the underlying image. Obviously the process in which
contours are generated is purely a mathematical process which might not
take into account the presence of topographic features e.g. streams.

I was wondering if there is some sort of method which could be used to
"visualize" values in a grid. What I mean is if it is at all possible to
display the grid values in a numeric rather than a graphic format so that a
point in a certain position is labelled by its elevation value.

I am not sure if I have explained correctly what I am after.

A general observation is that GM generated contours are quite "edgy" when
compared with existing contour vectors of the same resolution. Also the
number of points is very much larger.

Could anyone suggest some good point reduction program which I could try? I
am aware that OziExplorer for apply a reduction routine so that "redundant
points" are deleted i.e. points which lay between start and end points of a
straight line. However I am looking for some form of reduction program on
its own, since Ozi is not able to handle efficiently large vector files.

I was told that there is an Arcview script for the purpose: does anyone know
the name and where to find it? Is there somewhere something which could
"round" curves eliminating that "edgy" feel?

Thanks

Maurizio

Thanks for checking it out. Since making my concern known I have had
another opportunity to use it in the field. I did not have the same
problem. It may have been too many large sid files at once.

Thanks again.

Maurizio,

If you want to see all of the individual points in a grid as points with
elevation labels, what you can do is load the elevation layer, then export a
XYZ file using the File->Export Raster and Elevation->Export XYZ Grid menu
command. Then, load that XYZ file back in using the File->Open Generic ASCII
Data File menu command and select the "Point Only" import option. Of course
you can also always see the elevation at any given location in the status
bar.

The "edginess" of the contours generated in Global Mapper is dependent on
the source elevation data, the sample spacing the contours are generated at,
and the setting on the Simplification tab of the contour generation dialog.
The Simplification tab allows you to remove what Ozi terms "redundant
points". There is a slider allowing you to configure how far off a straight
line a point has to be before it is considered "redundant" and is removed.

There is not anything in Global Mapper that will allow you to artificially
add points to a contour line feature to enhance the curvature of the line
feature (this would probably be a spline curve or something of the sort).
Typically if your source elevation data is resolute enough you will get
sufficient curves though.

My co-worker brought it to my attention that when we write out
elevation data in dem format, it makes it all integer, dropping the
float portion. Now, we've gotten data from USGS with fractional
elevations. But GM doesn't support it. Looks like the "A" record,
data element 15, starting at byte 817.

Am I missing something?

Oh... also noticed then I wrote out the DEM, it changed my vertical

vert is feet. Am I able to tell GM to keep the different unit types?

ENVI can load/save shapefiles, so I find more practical to stick to shp.

Jim,

When exporting to the DEM format there is a drop-down allowing you to select
the elevation units to save to. This is where you would select feet or
meters, or if you need more accuracy than that decimeters or centimeters.

If you can zip up the DEM with fractional elevations that you're having
trouble loading and email it to support@... I'd be happy to
take a look at it.

That elevation units dropdown was right in front of my nose. I

The problem is not reading the fractional DEM... that works just

Maybe there already is in source code but I would like to see it exposed

one having a slightly different set of parameters but I want the label
to be the same. Organizing that in the OCC's current configuration is

Dave,

You could add your overlay ID to the front of the view shed description when
you create the view shed and just keep the end of each description the same.
You can also right click on layers in the control center and change their
displayed description after you initially create the layer if you'd like.

To re-order the layers in the control center you can right click on them and
select the options to move them up or down in the control center and the
draw order.

Thanks,

Is there anyway to lock down one layer and move another one around to
nudge them into alignment when they don't quite match up? Using the pan
function moves all layers together. If you could do it individually, it
might come in handy like when using a .shp file that doesn't seem to

André,

If you select more than about 16,000 characters worth of files, the Windows file dialog has a nasty habit of either just returning some of the selected files or even returning none of them. I’d suggest using the File->Open All Files in a Directory Tree menu command as it does not have such a limit. Otherwise, you can just select a few hundred files at a time.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

I noticed that the gtif that GM writes out doesn't have the Resolution
tag. We usually print from Photoshop and have to set them from there.
Might be nice to have to have the options when saving.

I've finally been playing with the printing option in GM. Argh...
feels very rudimentary in its ability.
Wonder if any of the bright people on this board have developed any
examples or tutorials. Actually, that would be a great idea for the

Jim,

Global Mapper doesn't really have any concept of DPI internally, it keeps
track of pixels based on how large of an area they actually represent on the
earth and not how large they would be on a printed sheet of paper. If any
kind of DPI option was added it would just have to be an optional box to
fill in on the GeoTIFF export options dialog that would get written out to
the DPI flag in the TIFF header.

We actually have been planning on developing some sort of tutorial-based
documentation for Global Mapper for a while now, we just haven't been able
to get around to it yet. Of course, if any of you have a creative urge and
fell like writing some tutorials on any subject, we'd be happy to provide
them to our users.

Marcus,
You could try exporting both DEMs using GM to xyz files, import them to EXCEL, subtract the Z values and replace the elevation values in the xyz file and then open the xyz file in GM again. If you have more than 65,536 data points you will have to work with smaller areas at a time as EXCEL can only handle that many rows.
If you have any trouble you can send me the DEMs and I will do it for you.

Maybe someone can point me in the right direction.

I am reviewing the demo version to determine if Global Mapper may be
useful in reading nautical charts for small boat navigation.

I am particularly interested in NGA's DNC vector charts and NOAA's S57
charts.

As a test I downloaded a full DNC chart library from the NGA web site.
Then using Global Mapper I tried to do an "Open data file" using the the
VPF format. Not knowing anything about the DNC format or which data
files to load I looked in each folder of the downloaded chart library
but Global Mapper didn't list any files for loading. Does anyone know
what files in a DNC chart library I should try loading with Global Mapper.

Second question. I have downloaded many of NOAA's S57 charts and used
software to translate the .000 data files to .snc "SENC" format files
that are readable by a navigation program I have. I tried to do an "Open
data file" on these .snc files with Global Mapper but could not get
Global Mapper to recognize these as proper data files. Can Global Mapper
recognize the SENC format or must I go back to the S57 .000 files.

Any guidance will be appreciated.

Before posting this I did do a search on past messages for DNC, SENC,
S57, etc. but didn't come up with any hits.

You should be able to load either the 'dht' file or a 'lht' file for a DNC
chart. These will be in the upper directories of a DNC chart extract. You
should also be able to load it directly from the .zip file.

The NGA web site can be a bit confusing, so make sure that you've actually
downloaded a DNC chart and not a patch to a chart.

I'm not familiar with the SENC files nor do I know if they are compatible
with the existing S-57 format. When you try to load the .SNC files I presume
that you are prompted to select the file type, correct? If you select S-57
as the file type can you load the file successfully?

Thanks,

Mike

Subject: [global_mapper] nautical charts

The folks at TerraServer-USA.com have once again changed the interface
to their data, breaking Global Mapper. We have a patch for the problem
that will make TerraServer access work again. Just download the file
at http://www.globalmapper.com/TerraServiceAccessor.zip and extract
the contents into your Global Mapper 6 installation folder
(likely "C:\Program Files\GlobalMapper6") to get the fix.

We plan on doing a v6.08 release to include the fix in the next day or
so if you'd rather wait.

Let me know if you have any problems or questions.

Thanks,

Mike

Thanks Mike!

I found lht files - they worked without any problems.

I also loaded my backup CDs with the S57 000 files and they loaded
without problems.

I will have more questions to ask - but for now I am trying to catch my
breath. Global Mapper's display of these data files is absolutely
beautiful! None of the navigational software I have seen comes anywhere
close.

My next questions are going to be about why the difference between
Global Mapper and the navigational programs I have seen. Is Global
Mapper allowing "over zooming" and therefore displays "false precision"
that would be dangerous for navigation. Is Global Mapper using so many
"computer cycles" that it can't keep up or is likely to "hang" if it is
tracking with a GPS. No need to try and respond to this. I will send
more concise and coherent questions tomorrow.

Again thanks.

I use Easy Icon Maker (http://www.icon-maker.com/). They offer a 15-day
free trial version. I found that using a 16x16 area centered inside a
32x32 palette (the remaining area should be transparent) will make the
symbol the same size as the ones in GM.

I know that the ability to edit viewsheds is planned for a future
release in Global Mapper. My hope is that it can be bumped up the
priority list because right now I am dealing with a project that
contains literally dozens and dozens of viewsheds. This work is being
constantly reviewed and revised and it is causing me many extra hours
worth of work because there is no viewshed editing capability in GM.

Thanks.

Dave

Dave,

I'll take a look ASAP and see if I can't add that capability and get you a
new version sometime in the next few days.

Thanks,

Mike
