Hello, people.

I am almost embarrased to ask this, as I am pretty sure it must be a
FAQ, but I have already searched for an answer in several places to no
avail. Please bear with me.

I have a colection of MODIS files. Problem is that I am not able to
load them into Global Mapper 7.04. The files where originaly packed
into several archives, and there is just a small file in plain spanish
describing metadata as well as scale and radiance data for each band
(the file is a BSQ containing 19 bands).

When trying to load the file into global mapper, it says that the
overlay type can not be determined from the filename -extension of
file is "bin". So, I select FAST-L7A (landsat) as suggested in some
site in internet (and, as a matter of fact, is the only selection that
gives me a result different from "corrupt headers" or no data
contained). It seems to be working, and after a while it returns the
message "Invalid Image Size for FAST/L7A file whatever.bin".

I am guessing that I am lacking a descriptor file, indicating which
bands I want to see and that kind of parameters. I have no idea how to
generate one. I am supposing as well that in such descriptor I could
direct the application to read only certain bands? I would be
interested in having just a view of near infrared bands.

So, kind readers, the summarized question would be: how can I open a
bin file containing MODIS images?

Thanks you all.
Aaron.

Aaron,

Actually the correct file type is probably the one labeled "NED/BIL/." if
you file is indeed a BSQ formatted file. However, you will need a header
file (.hdr) file to accompany the .bin file to describe the layout of the
data. The data source where your obtained the BIN file from should have
header files of some kind available. They may also have the data available
in the native HDF format which Global Mapper should also be able to load
without any additional files.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Thanks,

Mike

Mike,
I've just send you an e-mail with the sample data attached but it returned back
to me.
So I've uploaded the data for you to download at:
www.soilcompany.nl/ftp/SampleDataGM.rar
I've included a PowerPoint so you can see how it should be. If the grid is
opened in Surfer it contains the 3 values. If it is opened in GM it contains
only one value.
The grid is in Dutch projection.
With regards,
Paul

   Mak,

Can you send me the world file and tell me where in the world the data is
supposed to be located? I may be able to figure out the projection for you.
If the JPG file itself isn't too big that would be helpful as well. You can
   send it all to support@....

For the gridding of point data, how much data are you trying to grid? It
could be that you are running out of memory, so depending on how much memory
is in use when you start gridding the data it may or may not complete. If
you use the Gridding tab when gridding the data you can break it up into
smaller pieces (I'd say a 2x2 grid) and then it should complete with less
   memory used.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

   Thanks,

   Mike

   Hi mike,

Thanks for replying and sorry I haven't replied to you sooner but I
was expecting an e-mail telling me that someone had done so.

Anyway, I think you've hit the nail on the head. It is looking for the
projection system and I'm not sure what to tell it. There's no
projection file with the images if that's what you need to know.

It's best to treat me as an idiot and go through the process step by
   step, if that's possible.

Just as a side note, MP7 is freezing %50 of the time when going
through the Gridding 3D Point Data... usually at 94% loaded. You can
put the same date through and sometimes it works and sometimes it freeze.

Thanks Mike,

That is excellent news! The maps I need to work on are sometimes
best done in Global Mapper, sometimes in Google Earth, but in the
end I always need complete solutions in both, so this way I will be
able to move back and forth with complete ease. The vector features
are really all that I care about, so I am looking forward to 8.0 or
8.1.

Hi Mike.
Hi upgraded to version 7.x
It seems now that when I try to select a point feature that sits on 2
intersection lines. I cant highlight the point feature by clicking. (it
wants to select the lines.) If I click and drag a box around the point
all 3 features are highlighted. I can then cancle the 2 lines and edit
the point. However, if I need to "move" the point feature, this does
not work. They would all have to be moved..... Help!

The solution to this is to go into the vector display part of the config file
and uncheck the select lines option. When you want to select lines again, go
back into the config file and recheck that option.

Mike,
The various blend modes in GlobalMapper come close to allowing the
fusion of low resolution multispectral imagery with high resolution

Any plans to add pan-sharpening to GM's already impressive tool kit?

Hi Mike,

Just FYI it appears that a WIKI admin called Pilotguy has deleted the
Global_Mapper entry.

I searched for the log entry for a reason but was unable to find one.

Mike,

Did you recieve the Surfer grid file I've sent you last week?
The problem was when I open the Surfer grid which contains 3 distinct values GM
only displays average value.

With regards,

Paul

Paul,

Actually I did not receive the Surfer Grid. We did have a couple of periods of
server issues last week, so it may have been lost. Can you please re-send it to
support@...?

Thanks,

Mike

Colin,

Yeah, I saw that it was deleted despite a good plea from a user. That is
disappointing since a quick search turned up sites for several other GIS
products.

Thanks,

Hola Jorge, Donde vive?
Thank you for the information. I changed the projection on my 7-1/2
degree quad map from UTM to Geographic. I see that it distorts it by
making it square. Would it still be distorted when I print it? Also,
what is the bad result when I put a collar on a UTM map? Maybe I
could live with it, if it's not too bad. Thanks.

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the previous answer. I tried your angled lettering
suggestion and it seems to work well. Here's another question for you
or whoever: I want to use both a Garmin GPS 18 and a Garmin GPSMap60 to
input track or route data into Global Mapper. The GPS 18 comes in
either USB or PC (serial port) configuration. After looking at GM's
help menu, I believe either would work, but is one better than the
other?

Also, I'd like to put several layers on the GM workspace. I
see "overlay" in the help menu, which sounds like only one extra layer.
Can I put in more than one? Thanks
Jim

Jim,

You can track either one of those GPS units in real-time with Global Mapper.
However, Global Mapper does not support transferring user data, like tracks and
routes, directly with connected GPS units. You would to use some other 3rd party
software to transfer the data and save it to a file for use with Global Mapper.
I'd recommend either Garmin's MapSource application or Waypoint+.

Global Mapper supports any number of overlays (i.e. layers) being drawn on top
of each other.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Thanks,

Mike

Forgive my ignorance, but is it possible to "Add From File" a .prj for
a coordinate system type that isn't listed as a default type in the
drop down menu of the projection menu? I have already updated my
version of Global Mapper to the new version that is new-style prj
compatible.

Matt,

So long as your coordinate system is based on one of the built-in base
projection systems (like Transverse Mercator), then certainly. Almost all
local coordinate systems are based on some projection system built-in to
Global Mapper with a given set of parameters. Let me know the actual
coordinate system (or provide a sample .prj) if you still have questions and
I’ll take a look.

Thanks,

Mike

Mike,
I looked through the built-in base projections and couldn't find one
that had all the parameters I needed. I have coordinate pair origin,
scale factor, and false Northing/Easting which is pretty standard for
many projections (as far as I can tell). However, this particular
local projection also has a rotation factor in it. Are there any
projection types built into Global Mapper that can utilize this final
piece of information?
Also, on an unrelated note, my server admin has told me that the
reason my emails from the global_mapper@yahoogroups.com have been
bouncing from my email is that our spam filtering company, SpamCop
(not sure if that's one word or two) has blacklisted the email. I
don't know why, we have tried to whitelist it on our end but
apparently to no avail. Just thought you might be interested to know
about that particular problem as well.
Thank you for you help,
Matt
