Global Mapper Software LLC is pleased to announce the availability
of Global Mapper v5.01 for download at
http://www.globalmapper.com/global_mapper5_setup.exe . The most
significant change in v5.01 is the fixing of a bug that caused
modified vector features that were saved to a workspace to not be
saved again the next time that workspace was opened and then saved
again.
Several other additions were also made, including the ability to
batch convert MrSID imagery to GeoTIFF and JPG files as well as the
ability to zoom to any overlay by right clicking on it in the
Overlay Control Center and selecting the appropriate option from the
menu that pops up. See the What's New page at
http://www.globalmapper.com for a complete list of changes.
Please let us know if you have any problems, questions, or comments.
Thanks,
Global Mapper Support

I have used this method and it works fine for GPS tracks (lines). I
have not found a way to generate the elevations for waypoints
(points). This would be a nice feature. (Or maybe it is already
there and I just haven't found it.

What is the source of the DEMs?
If you are using GLOBE or GTOPO30, they are 1 kilometer/pixel resolution,
and there is not a lot you can do. A lot can change over the course of 1
kilometer.

Thanks...the data is GTOP030 so the problem is 1km elevation data -
producing large blocks as I zoom in.
I am also loading 1M E00 country data (political boundary) that shows
a smooth 1M contour. Is there a way to export this image, the
efficiently (ie Not pixel editing) remove the elevation coloring that
lies outside the boundary line?
Also....my DEM file includes a lot of area (ie Southeast US) that I
don't need - is there a way to load only the DEM area info I'm
interested in? Or must I load the full 96mb DEM?
thanks again

You can get smaller area, higher res. DEMs from Map Mart (there's a link
in Global Mapper to do that...) DEMs are free but you can only "order" 10
at a time.
As far as data, I've been able to load 3 gig worth of ten meter DEMs (298
files) into GM with no problems (and saved the GeoTIFF too!).
I'll let others answer the export part ...

Hello,
I have some landsat images that i want to disply but can't get to
work so far. The data is in NDF (?) format. The bands are in <name>.I
[1-8] e.g <name.I1, name.I2, etc.) format. These are accompanied by
header files with <name>.H1 referencing band 1-5 and 7, <name>.H2 and
<name>.H3 referencing the other bands. They appear to be BSQ files
but Global Mapper does not understand the header file (even when
changing name to <name>.hdr. Is there another procedure for importing
files of this type? The scene was freely downloaded from:
ftp://nas.library.unr.edu/keck/landsat7_2/landsat7_2/p39r35b/
Thanks!
Did you also grab the README?
ftp://nas.library.unr.edu/keck/landsat7_2/landsat7_2/p39r35b/README.TXT
It has a lot of the header info and data "dictionary" stuff. If it is not
useful to you directly, Mike might be able to use it for an answer.

The NDF format is not yet supported by Global Mapper. Typically you can
also obtain the LandSAT data in a GeoTIFF or other more common format
which Global Mapper can handle. You might check around a bit on the
website where you downloaded the data to see if it's available in
another format.

1. I've collected a lot of .adf files from seamless.usgs.gov. I've
unzipped them in seperate directories. There are coverage overlaps
(from my selections). A. Is there any harm/waste in having
overlapping coverage adf files? B. Should I redownload adf files
using a more consistent area selection? C. Can I move all the
unzipped files into on directory for easier loading?
2. Is there any way (other than the slider) to control the Water
Level values in Configuration>Vertical Options? I'm working with
ialands and get a lot of terrain dots where there should only be
water.

Hi,
I'm exporting geotiff files, but find that I can only open them in
Globalmapper. I've tried in Photoshop, ImageMagick, and event
another GIS package. Are their certain limitations in doing this?
I haven't heard any other reports of users having trouble with GeoTIFF files
created from Global Mapper. What kind of errors are you getting in the other
applications? Also, what settings are you using when creating the GeoTIFF
files (i.e. palette, 24-bit RGB, elevation). The only thing I can think that
would be incompatible with most other software is the elevation GeoTIFF,
which is supported by only a very few GIS applications (I believe MicroDEM
supports it). If this is what you are using, try the 24-bit RGB export and
see if that works better.
Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Barrett,
There isn't any harm in having the overlapping coverage, although there
is of course some wasted space. I doubt that it's significant though.
Global Mapper can handle the overlaps just fine, so unless you're really
tight on hard drive space I wouldn't worry about it.
If you store the files unzipped, they do need to be in separate
directories since the file containing the actual data is names the same
for each selection. However, Global Mapper can load .adf files directly
from .tar.gz archives, so if you keep all of the data in .tar.gz files,
they will not only be smaller but can also be stored in a single
directory and have meaningful names.
There isn't a way to control the water level other than the slider in
the Vertical option. You can create your own custom shader which may
allow you to get rid of some of the terrain bumps that you don't want by
assigning all elevations below a certain value to one color (blue for
example). You'll find the custom shader creation on the bottom of the
shader drop-down on the toolbar.

Mike;
In reply to Barrett, you said:
"There isn't a way to control the water level other than the slider in
the Vertical option. "
IU've been meaning to suggest a "type in the number" field for that
value, since there seem to be some unwieldy jumps in values. I often
need to have a value adjustable in .1 values and it doesn't seem to be
doable now.
Any chance of adding that to your ever-growing list?
And this is also a good time to say thanks for all the stuff you've
added already. Awesome prog and getting better all the time.
Best regards,
Tim O'Donoghue

Thanks Mike....I have done some experimenting with the custom shader
per your suggestion and have made a little progress. I'm realizing
there are many possible shader option/solutions....can I get your
expert recommendation re how best to achieve the following (if
possible.)
WATER SHADING: I'd like a gradient that goes from dark blue (zero or
less) to light blue (for the adjusted water level - I'm finding
anywhere between 2-8 meters works well.)
TERRAIN SHADING: Id like a gradient that goes from a light terrain
(sand color) for whatever I set the water level at (eg 2-8m) to
another color (e.g., light green) for mountain tops.
Is this possible with Global Mapper? If so what is the basic
approach? If not, what do you recommend?
Thanks Again,
Barrett
yet another question and possibly a suggestion:
Q: Is there any feature like the 3DEM vertical "Spread To" (color)
feature in Global Mapping Custom Shading?

Barrett,
Using the custom shader settings, you can simply assign a color of dark
blue to zero and anything less than that will be dark blue. Then add
light blue at 8 meters or whatever, and anything in between will be a
gradient of those colors.
For terrain, add your sand color at just over your highest water level.
For example, if you had light blue at 8 meters, try adding the sand
color at 8.01 meters. That way you'll get a sharp transition rather than
a gradient. Finally, add as many additional colors for as many
additional heights as you need to get up to the colors you want for the
mountain tops.
I'm not familiar with 3DEM's "Spread To" feature, what does it do?

Thanks - that sounds straight forward. I got brain-lock thinking
I'd have to enter a color for every elevation. The 3Dem "Spread To"
feature allows you to assign a unique colors to 2 elevations (eg 1M
and 1000M), then choose 'Spread To', and it will generate a color
gradient for the evelvation values in between. Thanks Again.

I've got DEM file of the US (WGS84) and I need to utilize a portion
of it in am map I'm creating. When I convert the projection to UTM83-
13F and either open the geotiff I created of it in PSP or bring it
into my CAD program the image is "scrunched" somewhat compared to the
image in GM and it doesn't reference correctly.
Is it not possible to do this kind of conversion?
Thanks,
Jim
Jim,
Most likely what you're seeing is related to having non-square pixels,
which most non-GIS and even some GIS applications don't handle very
well. To rectify this problem, make sure that the X and Y resolution
entered when you export the file are identical.

As a person who is relatively new to the GIS / computer mapping world
I want to say that this program is my favorite find of the last
several years. It's a pleasure to begin this exploration with this
program. Now...
I want to measure acreage along the land surface rather than along
the horizontal plane. From orthos and by walking with my handheld GPS
I will define areas that were logged at different times. I think I
can then use the digitizer tool to trace my lines and create area
features for the different logged areas, which I could then measure
with the measure tool.
But the mountain sides have more land surface than the flat valley
below for the same linear acre. There must be some way to measure the
actual surface of the ground. Can I use Global Mapper to help me do
this or does anybody know of some way I can do it?
I have searched for references in a few GIS oriented users groups but
haven't come up with anything yet. Is there some term for this
process that I don't know?

Hello Everyone,
This is a non-urgent query.
Claudius Ptolemy (2nd Century AD) wrote a geography which included a
long list of places with their co-ordinates according to his own system,
measured from a meridian in mid-Atlantic and I think the equator.
Should it be possible to plot this list of places, in a different
co-ordinate system, in GM?
One of the disgraces of ancient history and geography is that there is
no good English translation of the Geography. Bill Thayer/Lacus Curtius
started a great site on him but abandoned the work because of the
translation. His work so far can be seen at:
http://www.ukans.edu/history/index/europe/ancient_rome/E/Gazetteer/Periods/Roman\
/.Texts/Ptolemy/home.html
However, I just discovered the Greek text can be accessed by subscribing
to TLG.
And was wondering about trying to complement this by a plotting of the
places.

I'm trying to create a "generic ascii file" to describe an area/line
on top of my data. It doesn't seem to work. Here is my file. What am I
doing wrong????
Thanks

Steve,
Global Mapper currently only supports reading coordinates in strictly
decimal formats, like xx.xxxxxx. The coordinates that you supplied are
in degrees, minutes, seconds. All you have to do to load them is convert
them to decimal degrees. The formula is decimal_degrees = degrees +
minutes / 60 + seconds / 3600. You might also want to change the west
values to negative, or specify a scaling factor of -1 for the x
coordinates when importing the data.

Try this. This approach may not be the only way to do it, but it works for me.
1) Convert your coordinates in ascii files to decimate format
For example, your first line will be
33.429522 -96.301839 (use negative for westing longitude)
2) Pull down menu File -> Open Generic ASCII Text File(s)
Give ASCII file name xxx.txt
3) When Generic ASCII Text File Import Options Window open,
Select Y/Northing/Latitude Coordinate First under Coordinate Column Order
Block
Hit OK
4) When Select Projection for xxx.txt Window open
Select Geographic for Projection, WGS84 or NRD83 or NRD 27 for Datum (anyone
applied),
ARC Degrees for Planar Units
Hit Ok

Jerry,
The online User's Manual section covering the Generic ASCII import
describes all of the recognized attribute names and how to use them. You
can get to this from the User's Manual link at
http://www.globalmapper.com or by pressing Help on the Generic ASCII
Import dialog.
Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Subject: [global_mapper] Ascii Feature Attribute documentation
When importing/exporting vector data as Generic Ascii, GM gives the
option of including 'feature attributes'.
Where are these documented?
Thanks!

Here's the preface to my request:
I am working on a hiking book and will use Global Mapper to produce
contour maps. I would like very high resolution graphics to produce
crisp lines. The publisher has requested 1200 dpi resolution for line
graphics. The maps will be 5"x8", so that translates to 6000x9600
pixels. (I don't think I'll get there, but want as high res as
possible.)
I plan to capture the screen images from GM to tiff files. To get the
most pixels that I can, I increase the screen resolution to the
maximum that my graphics card will allow, and make the window-size
full screen. The problem is that as I increase the pixel density on
the screen, contour labels self-scale down to smaller and smaller
size. When the screen image is captured and reduced to the target
5"x8" the labels are impossible to read.
Is it possible to add a control to GM to allow me to independently
specify the font size of contour labels, rather than the software
making that decision itself "on the fly?"
This font-size issue is may last hurdle in producing very nice
graphics for my book.
Thanks for any help you can provide.
Mike
Mike,
We plan on adding customizable font support to Global Mapper in the very
near future. This will include not only selecting what size of font, but
also what font face and color.
Look for this is one of the next couple of releases.
Thanks,
Mike

That's great to hear, as it addresses a concern of mine when using
shapefiles. Thanks for all of your work.
