Mike,
While navigating in the map it might be helpful sometimes to go back to
the last view although it was not saved.
Do you think you could add an option like "Restore Last View" which
makes it possible to see the last 1, 2, 3,.. views of the map?

Mike,
allways, before to write a message like this, I download latest build
for that day and I look if that problem was corrected.

Just starting to try and use GM seriously and have a couple of questions.

1. On some of the users web sites, the GM output has a scale bar without a
boundary (positioned on the map) and North arrow. I'm sure it must be
obvious but I can't work out how to do this. I can get the scale bar with a
boundary on two sides and placed outside the map area, but no options to
make any changes that I can find.

2. Is it possible to have style libraries that replace the existing styles
for vector area and point. I don't want to delete the existing styles
(just in case I use them) but I need to replace nearly all of them to make
them more closely match the Ordnance Survey styles and standard habitat
mapping styles used in the UK.. It would be nice to be able to have a
GMOriginal style file that I could replace with a UK style file, and
hopefully still be able to copy common styles between them.

I think that's it for now.

Many thanks,

Graham

Graham,

Global Mapper does not currently have any way to change the style of the
scale bar or add a north arrow, so anyone doing that must be doing it
themselves. We do eventually plan to add at least north-arrow support
though.

There is not currently any support for a "style library" but you can change
the styles of the built-in types on the * Styles tabs of the Configuration
dialog. You can also add completely new types if you want.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Thanks,

Mike

If you are using the Zoom Tool (my tool of choice for moving around the
map), you can Ctrl-Right Click to restore the last view.

More advance view restoration is planned for a future release.

Thanks for the reply.

I did wonder if the scale bar and north arrow were being added by an

add styles this makes an already long list longer.

If you change computers, can you move the customised style list to the new

Hi Mike,

I know there is a plugin API for GM to implement custom raster
import/export functionality. Is there an other API to extent GM´s
functionality by means of plugin DLLs?
Background for my question is:
I have written a "Name Search" DLL based on the "names database
format" introduced by OziExplorer (actually dBASE4) or alternatively
on the Geographic Names data published by the NGA under
"http://earth-info.nga.mil/gns/html/cntry_files.html". Now I want to
feed the result of my name search (lat/lon coordinates) to GM to have
it center the loaded map on this coordinate and plot some kind of a
marker on that location. My idea is to do this by hooking into the
"View->Center on location" command, which of course makes it necessary
to have an API from your side. Could you implement such an API?

Thanks

Graham,

The custom styles for built-in types are stored in the registry, so to move
those to another computer you would need to export your
'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Global Mapper' key from regedit and import it in
regedit on your other machine. User-defined classifications are stored in
the Global Mapper install folder in the custom_area_types.txt,
custom_line_types.txt, and custom_point_types.txt files. You can just copy
those to the Global Mapper folder on your other computer to have those come
across (make sure to do this when Global Mapper is NOT running on the new
computer).

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Thanks,

Mike

I have large raster files that need 7 or more LODs (levels of detail)
in Google Earth. I guess in G.Earth this called superoverlays (using
networked linked kml files). While G.Mapper does tile the rasters it
appears to only support one LOD level.

I also need to distribute these files for other users for use on their
local machines (users without internet access). Thus a hardwired
(absolute) path will not work.

Anyway, is there anyway to create multiple LODs with relative paths for
a local run kml? I guess this would also be like making
a superoverlay within a *.kmz (although I don't think I would keep it
in a kmz file for local harddrive access).

Global Mapper from that application. I wonder if perhaps something as simple

the running processes for Global Mapper and then post the message to Global

The first thing that I would check is that your export destination has
enough space for the file that you are exporting. This is the first thing
that comes to my mind that could cause the lockup.

If this isn't the likely source of the problem, I would then try using the
Gridding tab when you do the ECW export to break your export into some
smaller pieces (say a 3x3 grid) and see if you can then identify the subset
of the .sid files that could be the cause of the problem. I have seen cases
where .sid files have a corrupt spot in that at the maximum resolution,
causing Global Mapper to lock up or crash when it tries to export or view
that portion of the .sid file.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Brent,

The window messages only come with 2 32-bit parameters, so there really is
not room for a full bounding box (at least with much precision). A more
complicated mechanism (like a WM_COPYDATA message) would have to be used to
get more information across.

The calling application will be the one determining which Global Mapper
instance to send the message to, so it can handle multiple instances however
it wants.

I think that the overview window will be much easier to implement directly
in Global Mapper. Hopefully I'll have time to get around to that soon.

search is run
from some other application and you want to re-center a
running instance of
Global Mapper from that application. I wonder if perhaps
something as simple
as a custom Windows message that Global Mapper supports
being published
would work. I could make the LPARAM and WPARAM parameter for
the message be
the lat/lon values to recenter on. Then your application
could simply search
the running processes for Global Mapper and then post the
message to Global
Mapper with the appropriate parameters. Would this work for
you?

Thanks,

Mike

Subject: [global_mapper] Plugin support

Hi Mike,

I know there is a plugin API for GM to implement custom
raster
import/export functionality. Is there an other API to extent
GM´s
functionality by means of plugin DLLs?
Background for my question is:
I have written a "Name Search" DLL based on the "names
database
format" introduced by OziExplorer (actually dBASE4) or
alternatively
on the Geographic Names data published by the NGA under
"http://earth-
<http://earth- <http://earth-info.nga.mil/gns/html/cntry_files.html>
info.nga.mil/gns/html/cntry_files.html>
info.nga.mil/gns/html/cntry_files.html". Now I want to
feed the result of my name search (lat/lon coordinates) to
GM to have
it center the loaded map on this coordinate and plot some
kind of a
marker on that location. My idea is to do this by hooking
into the
"View->Center on location" command, which of course makes it
necessary
to have an API from your side. Could you implement such an
API?

Thanks

Jacques

Hi Mike,

I use 9.01 now.

I need small improvement. In Grid Display/Current Projection Grid I would
like sometimes to input different number of ground units for both directions
xy. It's necessary to see such grid when I have to work with base geodetic
maps in scales 1:500, 1:1000. They have no geographical grid, only meters
grid. Sheets of these maps can be divide onto smaller, but not always 2x2,
sometimes 8x5 or other ways.
So, I would like to have ground units in x direction and y direction
separately.

Dave,

I'd suggest using the Digitizer Tool to drag a box or Ctrl+Left Click to
select multiple features, then use Ctrl+C to copy those to the clipboard.
Then, open a new instance of Global Mapper, use Ctrl+V to paste the copied
area features, then use the normal vector export mechanism to export a new
file.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Thanks,

Mike

Hi all,
I writed a program called globar_gridder for that, you can generate
your own grids in meters or degrees with it.

The program is in Files for download and you can add your language in
the .ini file that it generates first time you run it.

Jorge,

I just tried this and it worked fine for me. How large was the area that you
were trying to export? Sometimes if things are too large the vector
rasterization can fail, resulting in a blank image. Try breaking up your
export into smaller pieces and see if that helps.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Thanks,

Mike

Hi Mike,

your idea with the custom Windows message sounds simple and feasible,
but however since lParam and wParam only pass two 32-bits values around,
and I am also interested in the extents of the currently loaded maps in
GM, I would suggest that I send GM a Windows message with lParam
pointing to a structure maintained by my application and wParam denotes

Jacques,

You can't pass a pointer to a structure in your applications address space
to Global Mapper through a simple message. Each application has its own
virtual address space, so a pointer in your address space means nothing in
Global Mapper's address space. For passing a structure the WM_COPYDATA
message would have to be used as it has support for passing a chunk of
memory across process boundaries. The WM_COPYDATA method would definitely be
much flexible and expandable in the future to include other capabilities
though, so it may be worth the extra complexity.

Thanks,

Mike

Mike,

yes you are right. I should have read the documentation more extensively.
Do you have plans to implement a WM_COPYDATA protocol on your side (the
GM side) ?
If yes, I will do the necessary part on my side.

Thanks
