Mike,
I learn new things all the time from GM. I noticed that "geographic"
projection now shows up as "plate carree" by default. After
saying "huh?" I did some searching. Ah, "geographic" is really not a
projection, per se, but a reference system. "Plate Carree" is really
the more correct term to use. Or EPSG finally updated something.
Did I learn correctly, sensei?

Jim,

Where are you seeing the Geographic projection show up as Plate Carree? The
Plate Carree projection is just an alias for the Geographic projection in Global
Mapper, but I would only expect it to show up if you explicitly select it.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Thanks,

Mike

Yes, I'm loading some shapes that are exported as "geographic" but when I load
then back in, it shows up as Plate Carree. I know they are the same thing, but
this is the first I've noticed it.

I can confirm that (GM 9.02, Build date Mar 10 2008). When I export
the Geographic "projection" to a prj-file (Projection->Save to file)
and later load this file, "Plate carree" will show up as projection
instead.

Christian/Jim,

I was just able to confirm this as well. It was a small oops when loading PRJ
files with a Geographic "projection" that was easy to fix. I have placed a new
build of Global Mapper 9 with the fix at
http://www.globalmapper.com/global_mapper9.zip . Simply download that file and
extract the contents over your existing v9.xx installation to give it a try.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Hi Mike,
I've got quite a few user defined line and point styles that I no
longer use. I've deleted them, but they won't stay deleted. The next
time I open my GM 8 or reload my workspace, they're back again. How
can I delete them permanently? I think some or maybe all of them were
created by editing a previously created style. Maybe that's the problem.

Thank you much.

Hi Mike,
I'm making a map using GM 8. I'm having the map printed at a nearby
commercial printing business on a 36" plotter.

I put a couple of photos on my map by manually rectifying the images.
I then export the workspace file to a Geo Tiff to give to the printer
people. The photos look good on the computer, but when they're
printed, they have very low resolution. They look like they've got a
fine mesh screen covering them. The text and the vector graphics come
out crystal clear. Is there any way to keep those photos at a fairly
high resolution, say 150 dpi?

Thank you much.

Hi Mike,
Is there any way to change the dimensions of an exported .tif file? It
would make it easier for the people where I'm having it printed, if it
was the same size as the finished map. I tried printing the workspace
to a .tif file, using the correct scale, but I end up with only part
of the workspace in the new file. Also, the file size is about 18
times bigger than when I simply export as a .tif.

Thank you much

Jim,

You can try closing Global Mapper, then going to the Global Mapper install
folder and opening the custom_line_types.txt and custom_point_types.txt file and
deleting the types that you don't want just in case for some reason those files
aren't able to be overwritten when you close Global Mapper.

The other thing that could be happening is if you have a workspace file that you
are loading that has features with those custom types in them, they will
automatically be added as new types when you load that workspace file (this is
to facilitate sharing of data between different computers that might not
necessarily have the same custom types). You would need to reclassify the
features in those workspace files to not use the custom types, otherwise the
types will be re-added every time you open Global Mapper.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Thanks,

Mike

Jim,

Try reducing the sample spacing of the file when exporting the GeoTIFF to
increase the resolution. For example, halving the sample spacing with double the
resolution in both directions (and create a file 4 times as large).

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Jim,

The dimensions of an exported TIFF file are controlled by a combination of the
export bounds and the specified sample spacing. By default the sample spacing
will reflect the resolution of the most detailed layer that you have loaded, so
by default the full resolution of the loaded raster data should be utilizied.

The only way to manually specify the pixel size of an output raster is to use a
script file. You can specify the pixel size to export with the EXPORT_RASTER
command. Since a workspace is a script file, you can just load your workspace
file in a text editor and add an EXPORT_RASTER command that specifies the
desired pixel size to export your file that way at the required resolution.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Thanks,

Mike

Additionally the physical dimensions of a TIFF file are determined by
its XResolution and YResolution tags (values given in pixels per inch
or pixels per centimeter). As far as I know Global Mapper doesn't set
these tags but this can be done with any decent image editing software.

Actually you can specify a DPI value to write out to GeoTIFF files on the
GeoTIFF export options dialog. This writes out values to the XResolution and
YResolution tags in the GeoTIFF header, but doesn't make any difference at all
as to what is actually written to the image. The DPI is only used as a hint to
non-spatial applications, like printing applications.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Jacques,

I have added an option to the Vector Options tab of the Configuration dialog to
render line endpoints. I have placed a new build of Global Mapper 9 with the fix
at http://www.globalmapper.com/global_mapper9.zip .. Simply download that file
and extract the contents over your existing v9.xx installation to give it a try.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Thanks,

Mike

   Hi Mike,

In the configuration dialog (vector display tab) I can activate the
option to render area and line vertices. Could you add an option here
to just render the start and end nodes of vectors? Only if you find
   some spare time of course.
Or did I miss such a feature?

   Thank you
   Jacques

Hello Mike,
I was wondering if it would be possible some time in the future to add
an option to zoom to the extents of a feature (polygon, polyline, etc)
when selected, in particular with the info tool. It's not unusual for
me to select a feature and then want to see its extents. A button on
the info dialog would do it.
Thanks, as always,
Virgil

Virgil,

That's not a bad idea, I'll add something like that to the Feature Info dialog
(probably a right-click option so I don't have to waste space on a button).

Thanks,

Mike

Hi

Ive come across a small problem that i hope theres an easy answer to.
Normally i use GM to export terrain in STL format and aerial photos as
PNG's or JPEG's, then import the STL into blender (our main 3d
modeling package) and drape the AP over the top. Because they are both
exported from the same area feature bounds they match up perfectly.

However in our current project we are working on a area of coastline,
because the DEM only goes up to the coast when i import the STL into
blender i get a mesh with 3 straight sides (the edges of the
rectangular area feature) and one side which follows the shape of the
coast. The aerial photo on the other hand exports as a rectangular
image (four straight sides) as it exports everything within the area
bounds. This means of course that when i try to drape it over the
elevation model it does not match up.

Does anyone know if the is a way that i can set global mapper to treat
areas with no elevation data as simply being flat elevation data at a
specified height (i.e. 25m bellow sea level)

any help appreciated

cheers

Jake

For some reason, when I try to downlaod from Terra Server for the free
high resolution imagery, I get a white box for my area of interest. I
just installed the 9.02 upgrade, but I was having the problem before
the upgrade also. Any ideas? NW corner is 40.57,-105.04 and the SW is
40.51, -104.90. I tried "draw a box" and "current screen bounds with no
luck

I used the Multiple Attibute Label feature today and I appreciate it
being added, but I had a problem with the "New Line" feature for the
second attribute. Instead of putting the second attribute on a new
line, it just added a pipe symbol.

Is there a way that I can bring in only road data from the Tiger 2006
data? I want to convert the Tiger data to shapefile. When I bring the
data into GM, I then have to serch on feature_type = *road then
export. Just wondering if there was an easier method. Thanks.

- WheelerGIS,

This is something I posted to the ExpertGPS Forum
several months that may be of some help:

For those of you who use the Census Tiger Line data as
an overlay in ExpertGPS, here are a couple of 'roll
your own' links:

TGR2SHP v7.01 - converts Tiger 2006 SE files to ESRI's
SHP format:
http://tnatlas.geog.utk.edu/tea/downloadfree.htm

The latest Tiger/Line files (2006 SE):
http://www.census.gov/geo/www/tiger/tiger2.../tgr2006se.html

BTW, the Census Bureau says that they plan to move all
their tiger line data into ESRI shape files as free
downloads by the end of 2007.

Did you try opening the options of your elevation layer from the
Control Center and setting the "Replace Invalid with xx" option on the
"Alter Elevation Values" tab?

This is because multi-line text display is only supported for point features in
Global Mapper. For area and line features you will currently only get a
non-printable character.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Just go to the Vector Display tab of the Configuration dialog and use the filter
settings to disable everything except for road types.

The high res urban area imagery from TerraServer-USA only contains coverage in a
few areas, everywhere else will result in a white box. You can try using the
DigitalGlobe premium imagery source for free watermarked access as it should
have high-res imagery available everywhere in the US.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

In GM I find the easiest way to isolate features is go to:
search/search by attributes. Then search on feature type and get what
you want displayed. Click select all or however much you want. Next
right click on highlighted rows, from the drop down menu, select copy
features to clipboard. After you click OK the objects are in the clipboard.

Bring up another instance of GM and a ctrl/V will copy the clipboard to
the new GM session. Save it, copy it again, whatever, etc. from the new
GM window.

Greina,

Do you (or anyone else) have any actual OSM data in the raw XML format that
is used so that I could take a look? You can send it to

Mike,

Could you include this sript into GM?
In other words: I would appreciate to load OSM directly into GM!
