MMM...I see u dont want USB modem, right?, if u want one, go to http://
www.flashtux.org and look the database of drivers, there are many
modems USB u can get (like ALE 070, ALE130 and others)...but if u
want modem for ETH0 (its better), u just need plugin the modem, if u
have adsl u need download the rpppoe script to configure ur adsl, If u
are using Slackware just do it:

#adsl-setup

u need put ur username, pass, DNS1,DNS2, and maybe other date, and
after it...

#adsl-start

I think there are many distros with this script to configure ADSL,
good luck.

Hi Ivan!

Well, seems like you've been busy replying to a great deal of threads which
were also dead. Next time, please make sure you use proper grammar, spelling,
capitalization, and that you are coherent. Also, try to be a little less
annoying.

Make sure you use a recent Mandriva installation - older versions had
limited SATA support. I recommend using the latest which is LE2005 (aka
10.2).
Also, I'm not familiar with your chipset, but it might be required that
your put it into "legacy mode" using the BIOS setup.

Just a guess -- you have a Seagate hard drive and your MainBoard uses
the Silicon Image controller.

If so then the problem is with the Seagate hard drive:
http://home-tj.org/m15w/
"It's basically because of faulty SATA implementation of the affected
seagate hard drives combined with standard-compliant but peculiar
behavior of silicon image controllers."

Since you are just starting with Linux perhaps you could find another
hard drive (not Seagate) or switch to ide (instead of sata) for your
drive connector.

Blessings,

Nigel

Hello. I just set up a little Ubuntu rig here, and I'm practically a
complete newbie at Linux... I'm trying to figure out how to make it so
I can type in Hebrew in general, and specifically in X-Chat. I also
get that weird western-european gibberish instead of Hebrew when

Well, congratulations on wanting to learn how to program. People are divided
between themselves on which languages should be learnt first. Some people
claim you should start with something low-level and close-to-the-hardware
like C. Some people claim that you can start with an Agile language
(Perl/Python/Ruby/etc.), which are useful and yet able to produce fast code.
Some people claim you should teach Object-Oriented-Programming in the first
course, and other people think it's not absolutely necessary. Some people
like Haskell as the first programmers' language, others like Scheme (SICP),
etc. I even heard of someone who taught students how to program using first
DOS Batch files and then Assembly.

I fall into the camp that believes an Agile language would be best at this
point. You have several choices: Perl, Python, Ruby, etc. I have set up a
web-site which aims to be the first stop for Perl beginners:

http://perl-begin.berlios.de/

I did it because I like Perl and would like to help people who are new to it.
Other languages may be more suitable as a first programming language than
Perl, but I don't know. (I've studied programming using BASIC back at 1987,
and I wouldn't recommend starting with BASIC now.)

If you want to study Python, there is an online tutorial on www.python.org,
and plenty of online books on Python. I don't know about Ruby, because I
don't know it that well, and when I studied it was quite experienced.

Finally, you should probably read Eric Raymond's "How to become a Hacker"
Document:

http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/hacker-howto.html

Or in its Hebrew Translation:

http://www.rootshell.be/~eg/faqs/hacker-howto.heb.html

You need to consult:

http://iglu.org.il/faq/cache/56.html

Note that Ubuntu may have an easier way of doing these things, but I don't
know what it is. What is described in the FAQ is the most portable and
distro-independant way of doing it.

You probably need to set the character set in that specific network of X-Chat
to ISO-8859-8. To do that, either do:

/charset iso-8859-8

on the IRC command line. Or look at the Character Set entry box in the
network-editing dialog of X-Chat.

Thanks, that solved it. I had to fish around a bit but it turned out
all I needed for typing in Hebrew was already right there in Ubuntu
(or perhaps even in GNOME in general, I dunno.)

Besides all that, could someone reccommend a general newbies' guide to
Linux? I feel clueless half the time and a good guide to give me the
basics might help with that.
Thanks in advanced again.

i found a package "k3" or something. The book i 210 is
and the package included. A complete and perfect gui
for c++ code, available both for windows and Linux.
If you are interested, i'll find the exact name of the
package and book. Just let me know !

Kdevelop and Anjuta on KDE/GNOME aim for the IDE. Gambas tried to be a
visual-basic clone.

But then again, don't dismiss what Shlomi wrote earlier about
perl/python/ruby.

When I want to write a small glue program on linux with just about zero
logic, I use a shell script (shell scripts are sometimes abused for more
than that. Mostly on start-up scripts and such).

When I want to write a slightly larger program, I normally use perl. (My
personal choice. Not sure I would recommend perl for someone who is not
familiar to at least one of c/awk/unix).

Hi,

I'm looking to install a Linux that will make use of my 64bit computer (AMD Athlon 64) and will dual boot with Win XP. I have some questions regarding:
*What is the difference between a 64bit linux to a 32bit one, will there be any old software that won't run on 64bit linux?
*Is every Linux distrib. potentially Hebrew enabled? Are there distribs that are more comfortrable for Hebrew input?
*When I'll reinstall Win XP, does it destroy the multi-boot (I intend to run each OS on a seperate sata drive)?
*WillI be able to share network resources (file, printers, etc.) between a Linux and a Windows computer?

* With Hebrew & 64 bit considerations, which distrib is the suitable if I'm a newbie to Linux and want an easy start, but intend to be a hard-core user (in sys. admin. and in programming, also to X win)? What book or manual is recommended with it?

Thanks,
Asaf.

Hi Asaf,
First, did you used to work at cellcom once ?
   second, as for you questions:
i'm using FC3, and working with hebrew is not so sintuitive as in
    windows.
as for share resources, there some utilities like Samba which allows
you to share printers and so on...
normaly when you install xp, it ask you where and if you want to go
    over some other instalation.
i think that Fedora is realy great for start, there are a lot of
documentation on the net and the redhat site.
   hope it helps a little
shlomi.
