Subject: rpmbuild problems
fnosaj
Send Email Send Email

Hi,

I am trying to use rpmbuild to rebuild an rpm package I can't find for
rhel4 (djvulibre)

I get a strange error when trying to build it. What is strange is that
if I make it manually
in the same location and as the same user, I can make it without a problem.

This is the error:

if test /usr/lib/qt-3.3/bin/lrelease = ":" ; then : ; else \
   echo TRANSLATIONS=tmp.ts > tmp.pro && \
   cp djview.ts tmp.ts && /usr/lib/qt-3.3/bin/lrelease tmp.pro && cp
tmp.qm djview.qm && \
   /bin/rm tmp.qm tmp.ts tmp.pro ; fi
cp: cannot stat `tmp.qm': No such file or directory
make[2]: *** [djview.qm] Error 1

I am guessing that it is something to do with environment variables or
something similar.
Any advice?

Thanks in advance,

Jason

Subject: Connecting to internet on linux mandrake 10.1
sulamd313
Send Email Send Email

Hi;

I`m new to linux and installed the mandrake 10.1 on a dual boot (XP)
computer with Terayon tj715x modem (cable).

This modem can be connected to the pc with ethernet or usb cable.
The thing is that i can not access the internet. The ethernet card
and the modem are functional and i can see that because when i open
Konqueror and type a web address i get until
http://welcome.hot.net.il and can not get any further.

Why is that and how do i fix it.

As i said in the begining, i`m new to linux and dont know the shell
commands.

Checking "Configure your Computer" tells me that the ethernet card
and the modem receives IP addresses which are consistant with the IP
address from the XP OS and the Hardware monitor shows that the
ethernet card and the terayon modem are detected by the OS (even
when the hardware monitor lists the modem as unknown device).

Can anyone PLEASE help me solve this problem?

David

You need to setup a dialer. Check with your ISP what you need to use - L2TP or
PPTP, and verify that you have the
ISP's server address (IP address please, not by name)
your user name
your password

Try to get them to give you PPTP, which is much easier - run "drakconnect" as
root, or from "Configure your computer" go to "Network and internet" and then
"set up a new network connection".
In the dialog choose "ADSL" (yes, not cable) and at the country list choose
"Israel" and "Bezeq". Hit Next and choose "PPTP" in the list. now complete
the wizard with the above information and you should have an internet
connection.

For L2TP its much more complicated, so I suggest you convince your ISP to give
you PPTP, or convince your Cable company to give you non-dialer DHCP address.

Well even if you're not looking for love, and just a bit of fun thought I'd give
you all this tip. So you can stay away from all the BS fake profiles
places. This is what I've been using http://www.followmeherenow.info/fsez . No
joke, I've messaged about 5 women close to me and already 3 have
responded, and I am already organising to meet up with one. Not bad for a guy
who hasn't had a date in a while, lol! :)

Yes - make sure to select the "disk druid" method of partitioning,
locate your second drive in the list of drives and configured your
partitions there.

It is recommended that you install MS-Windows first and only then
install Linux. The reason is that the Fedora installation puts a "boot
loader" onto the hard driver that will let you choose - everytime you
turn on your computer - what operating system you want to use:
MS-Windows or Linux.

If you install Linux first and then MS-Windows, then the MS-Windows
installation program will remove that boot loader so you will not be
able to access Linux (until you restore the boot loader).

As a side note - if you have a single hard disk and installed MS-Windows
on the entire disk, and want to install Linux on the same disk in
addition to MS-Windows, then you should probably:
- remove MS-Windows
- Install MS-Windows again and make sure to remove all partitions from
the drive and then create a new one which is smaller the the size of
the drive (to leave some room for Linux)
- And then install Linux.

The problem is that newer MS-Windows versions (Windows 2000 and above)
use the NTFS file system by default, which is very difficult to access
from Linux and the Fedora Installation cannot resize such file systems
automatically to make room for Linux (*). If you specifically chose to
format the hard drive using the FAT32 file system, then you shouldn't
bother with the extra step as the Fedora installer can easily resize
such MS-Windows file systems without lose of information.

(*) Some Linux distributions, such as Mandriva Linux, offer the ability
to resize NTFS safely without the need to remove MS-Windows first and
reinstall it.

Fedora should have an automated tool to generate installation CDs (not
sure how its called or where it is available, but other distros have
these tools), so your best bet is to copy all the CDs into a single
directory (there should be no conflicts, and if there are, override
higher numbered CDs with files from lower numbered CD) - make sure to
keep the same directory structure as in the CDs, and then run the tool
to recreate the image, possibly passing an option to use a DVD sized
media.

Alternatively, you can use a CD authoring package (such as K3B) - pull
all files from the media CDs the same way as above, create your DVD
image from the contents of all the CDs, and then set the boot image for
the DVD to the file isolinux/isolinux.bin (in k3B there's a button on
the project toolbar for that, in other authoring software - you are on
your own).

Hi there
I've just immigrated a php CMS (drupal) from a windows server to a
linox server. I copied the db files (mySQL) directly from one server
to the other.
I'm having an encoding problem eventhogh all db collation set all
right. the db is encoded with hebrew_general_ci but what I'm getting
is a mix of the right letters and squares (the letters are right and
in there position but 90% of theme display as empty square - very
strange !).

I've copied my installation profile :

*) copying the files directly is probably not a good idea - it might
work, but a better idea would have been to dump the database to an SQL
script and then load it back to the other server.
*) collation has nothing to do with the encoding of the data, only with
sorting order.

As to your actual problem - you probably have an issue where the
encoding of the page that is displaying the data is not iso-8859-8
(what is called in MySQL hebrew_general_ci), and the dump from
phpinfo() is not helping to understand it.

Instead try this - load the page, where the data isn't displayed
properly, in your browser and right click on the page and choose "View
Page Info". In the dialog that opens there should be a line saying
"Encoding". I'm guessing it will say something like "UTF-8".
(I'm assuming you are using some kind of Mozilla browser such as Firefox
- if this is not the case, adapt the instructions to the browser that
you are using).

Just setup one of them (doesn't matter which - the one that is connected
to the internet) for "network sharing", and set the other's networking
for "automatic IP configuration" or DHCP (whatever it has).

And that should be it.
If you need more detailed help, please describe your setup more exactly

Okay, my setup is as follows:

computer #1: SuSE 10.0 (openSuSE) on Pentium-IV-2.0GHz.
computer #2: WinXP Pro on Pentium-IV-1.8Ghz.

Each computer has one network adapter
(obviously I'll need to purchase another one for one of them or a hub
to connect to the ADSL modem and then reconfigure it as a router, the
last option being not very good since we have three ISP to which we
need to connect from time to time)

and one Aztech ethernet bridge router DSL-600E functioning as an ADSL
modem.

Thanks again,

John.

First you'd need to figure out which of the computers will do the
sharing (be the "router" for the other). I'd suggest using the Linux,
as that would allow you to use the Linux firewall to protect the
network and you won't have to bother with setting up a personal
firewall on the windows machine.

If you choose SuSE as the router, you'd need to either install a second
network card and share from one to the other, or use a hub, setup two
IP addresses on one card and share from one IP to the other.

The second option is more complicated to setup, so I'm not going to talk
about it. As for the first option: most operating systems today (such
as Fedora, Mandriva or Windows) come with a "network sharing wizard",
but SuSE is missing that functionality. yet its not too complicated to
setup using yast firewall configuration wizard - refer to this page for
details: http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/feature/16579.html

Whats wrong with using this device as a router and have both computers
sharing the internet connection through that ?

Regaring using the modem as a router, I was told by many people who
tried it on their systems that using a router makes life more
difficult should you want to switch from one ISP to another.

Regarding the instructions, thanks, I'll try that and let you know.

John.

Granted, setting up a router with multiple connections is harder to
setup and harder to manage then a similar setup on a computer, but that
mostly depends on the type of router you have. I have no experience
with said Aztech, but on several routers I'm using and have used, such
as Edimax and D-Link, its quite easy to setup multiple connections and
enable them at will.

Unless you need to be able to setup some custom logic that automatically
switches connections, and/or are planning to do this several times a
day - there is no cause to worry. At worst you'd need to reenter all
the connection data (some 4 or 5 text entry fields) every time you want
to switch.

HI Oded and thank you so much for your reply.
I like to give some more information about my issue.
My system is based on drupal CMS (drupal.org) and therefore is based
on UTF8 encoding. Pages are also automatically encoded with Unicode.
2 other symptoms I noted are -
1. Some time a loaded page displays empty page. A look in the code
revile it got it all there but displaying nothing. Changing the
encoding in this case to Hebrew (windows) will display the page but
with wrong characters.
2. The encoding issue act strange

I couldn't read that - email does not transfer strange encodings well.

Most likely you have an issue where the drupal thinks that all its data
is utf-8,but in your case the hebrew is encoded in windows-1255.

You need to remember that for english text, utf-8 and any other 7 bit or
8 bit encoding is exactly the same, so you can have the database store
the the data in whatever encoding you like, and drupal would still
display it well.

Hebrew OTOH is encoded into different code points in windows-1255 and
utf-8. Unless you're PHP code explicitly converts the encoding before
display (using mbstring for example), then most likely you wont be able
to display hebrew properly.

My suggestion for you is to convert your database to utf-8.

Hello.

I've been running Ubuntu 5.10 (Breezy) for a while with no special
problems. It's on a separate hard drive in a removable drawer. I'm not
talking about USB or other removable media. A computer has room and
cables for two hard drives (at least). The drawers, which I've been
using for years, simply plug in to the cables. The frame of the drawer
is permanently connected to the cables leading to the motherboard. The
removable part simply plugs in with pins to the frame. That way, you
can remove one hard drive and put in another without opening the
machine. However, this is exactly the same as if you did open it and
change the hard drives.

The Linux disk had been out of the machine for about 24 hours. It had
been working fine and I had made no recent installations or other changes.

When I put in the disk and tried to boot into Ubuntu as usual, I got this:

Alert! /dev/hdc1 does not exist. Dropping to shell!

It just hung on that.

After going to Windows and coming back, I got the same thing several
times. Once, it continued, saying:

BusyBox v1.00-pre10 (Debian 20040623-1ubuntu 22) Built in shell (ash).
Enter 'help' for a list of built in commands.
/bin/sh: can't access tty: job control turned off
#_

Usually, it doesn't get that far, but just hangs on the first message.

Can anyone tell me how such a thing could happen and what - if
anything - I can do about it?

Someone suggested this may have been caused by removing a hard disk
before it was unmounted. I've never done that. I only change hard
drives after going out of Linux (or Windows) in the proper manner and
after the machine is turned off. However, I have some reason to
suspect that another user on this machine is not quite so careful.
It's not impossible that he hit "Shut Down" and immediately pulled the
hard drive.

In any case, I've heard this may be fixable (I've spent a lot of time
and effort setting up this system and it would be a shame to have to
format and start again...especially since I can't even get in to copy
out all the how-to's I had been compiling in case I needed to retrace
my steps).

Under Windows, I would have a good idea where to start to attempt a
fix (although, if Windows breaks, it's often hopeless). At minimum,
I'd have a good chance of recovering data. But, I'm a Linux
newbie...at least as far as anything like this is concerned.

I do have an Ubuntu Live CD, but have never tried to use it (hope it
boots). I've heard about fsck, but it has a lot of optional parameters
and, if I understand correctly, I have to be sure that no part of the
Linux system is mounted, or I could kill it for good.

What I need is a one-step-at-a-time walk-through, in baby talk. If
anyone knows how to go about this, I'd certainly appreciate the help.

Thanks very much.
