Hi guys. 2 hours ago I installed Ubuntu-Linux OS on my ThinkPad X31. My laptop
has a very limited hard-drive of 32 GB. With the 2 Operation systems I have got
left only with about 5 GB. Therefore, I would like to know how to remove my
Windows XP operation system. If someone can guide me through the steps I would
appreciate it. Thanks. Yaniv.

Hi!

Well, here are the steps:

1. First of all backup all the partitions on your computer. This can be done
either with a remote computer on the same Ethernet/Wifi connection, or with an
external hard-disk.

You can use the tar command - see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tar_(file_format) to do the backup.

This step is important because repartitioning may leave your hard-disk in an
inconsistent state.

2. Next, if you just want to re-use the Windows partitions as Linux ones
(mounted somewhere under /) you can just reformat them as Linux Ext3
partitions which is safer. If not, you'll need to do a more thorough re-
partitioning of your hard-disk. Good tools for repartitioning are:

* http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php

* http://mirror.isoc.org.il/pub/mandriva/official/iso/2009.0/ - the Mandriva
installer has an excellent repartitioning tool and can be used to repartition
your hard-drive.

You'll need to burn these live CDs and boot from them.

Why didn’t you delete it on the installation time ?

Does the boot record belong to MS or Ubuntu (what is the first screen after you boot).

If the boot selection belong to MS I suggest to reinstall all and just delete the MS partition in the Ubuntu installation process.

Otherwise you can use GParted tool which is a very user friendly !

http://lifehacker.com/photogallery/Lifehacker-Top-10-Ubuntu-Apps/1960077

Ubuntu users can install gParted with the following command:

#sudo apt-get install gparted

Good luck !

Hi all, I'm new to Linux.
I'm using Firefox as my browser.

It works mostly fine.
Only problem I got is, that sometimes when I open a YouTube tab, I can only hear
the soundtrack and the where the movie should be, appears a gray rectangle.
Now this is YouTube! I won't even begin describing problems in other movie sites
(Metacafe, GoogleVideos...).

How can this be fixed?

I'm using the latest FF 3.0.8 on Linux Mint (Felicia)

Have you tried upgrading to the latest Adobe Flash player?

http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/

I'm not familiar with Linux Mint, but I will try to install it on a virtual
machine here to see if I can reproduce this problem (and find a solution).

I am not familiar with Mint as well.

Do you know which plugins version do you use in firefox?

just type "about:plugins" in the firefox URL bar (where you write the web addresses like "www.google.com")
This should open an internal web page with all the plugins used by firefox

Check which plugin is used for flash

I use Ubuntu 8.10 with FF 3 and the flash plugin is "Shockwave Flash" from adobe.

OK, I was able to install Linux Mint on a VirtualBox VM, but I was unable to
get the "-vboxvideo" display driver to work properly. I'll try doing the same
with a vanilla Ubuntu VM, and report it.

Someone told me that Ubuntu and Linux Mint cause some problems with Flash, but
I did not verify it yet.

Like I said, I am not familiar with Mint. As for Ubuntu, I can say that the current version (8.10) works great in every aspect so far, including using firefox and watching youtube movies (and lots of other sites).
More over I have Ubuntu installed on 5 different machines (2 laptops, 3 desktops) with different hardware and everything is working great.

The Ubuntu 9.04 RC VM I installed ran the -vboxvideo display driver perfectly.
So I reported a bug with Linux Mint:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/linuxmint/+bug/363733

Linux Mint seems buggier than Ubuntu.

In any case, David (baum_j) - is there a good reason why you're using Linux
Mint instead of Ubuntu, Mandriva, or Fedora? If not, you may consider
switching to a different distribution.

Shlomi, thanks a lot for ALL your replies.
To be honest, I did not expect to find such serious people out there - willing
to install a virtual copy, just to test MY bug.
It really warms my heart.

Why am I using Linux Mint....?
Because it works.
It took me a few really bad experiences with Linux (including Ubuntu) to get
this thing going.

"Historically" :) I tried Ubuntu which did not support my Network card, and then
Kubuntu with the same problem.
I then waited for the next version of them, which again - did not support my
card. And I'm talking crazy forums search and correspondance and NDISWrapper and
all and all.
One of them did not support my sound card as well - or maybe both...

Then came Mint. It is supposed to be popular with American college boys. So I
figured it'll have all the laptop support in the world.
It does.
I'm not saying it didn't take forums' search and all - but the answers came! And
it works great. I actually thinks it's on top of Ubuntu, with added "out of the
box" support for all those things.

I'm really affraid moving to Ubuntu.
It was a nightmare struggling with it. I installed some 6 different Linux
flavours for about 20 times. (Also Mandriva if I recall...).
No fun.

Sorry for the long post,
David

Shockwave Flash 10.0 r22
I did some search about npwrapper.libflashplayer.so but I am not sure what to tell you.
Maybe you should try uninstalling the flash player and then reinstall it.

Sorry I can't be much help here.

I'm glad you're glad.

BTW, it's not a virtual copy - it's an installation of the OS inside a virtual
machine.

I see. That's reasonable, I suppose.

Well, I'll try upgrading to the new version of Linux Mint, and see if it
solves the -vboxvideo problem.

Group hello,

I have a one line batch file, with its mode set to executable.
The file runs fine when typing its name through the shell - in its proper
directory.
So, if for example the file is:
/home/david/dir/runme
then:
~/dir $ runme
Will successfully run the file.

However:
~/otherDir $ /home/david/dir/runme
Won't work.

Why is that?
How can this be fixed.
I do not wish to copy the batch file to the /usr/bin directory. It is a stupid
shortcut command, that on the long run has no business on wither /usr/bin, or
/bin directories.

They are not called "batch files" in UNIX. They are called shell scripts. And
shell scripts need to have the sha-bang at the beginning ("#!/bin/sh" ,
"#!/bin/bash", etc.) to be properly executable. Although sometimes it may work
without it.

Generally, putting "." (= the current working directory) in the PATH or
otherwise allowing one to run executables from there is dangerous, because
someone may hijack it to put malicious executables in your current location.
The PATH should only have fully-qualified paths.

What does "echo $PATH" in the shell is telling you?

What error does the shell emit?

What does "ls -l /home/david/dir/runme" and then "cat /home/david/dir/runme"
tell you?

Indeed.

Dear gnubsilers, hello again.
I need some advice, regarding a mount problem.

I am using a 2 year old Toshiba Satellite laptop - and it mostly functions
greatly.
I run an Ubuntu 8.10 (the latest as far as I know) with a 2.6.27-14-generic
Kernel version (again, latest).

The reason I mentioned having a laptop is the space issue. Having a laptop with
only(?) 80 Gigs mean that storage is a critical issue.
"Historically" this computer came with MS Shitsta installed on it.
When I installed Ubuntu, I initially reserved a 10G partition not be touched by
GParted. Can't remember why...

Now I want this precious HD real-estate, accounting for some 15% of my total
storage.

So I went to GParted, and chose the "ext3" option on this partition /dev/sda2.
I then updated my 'fstab' file accordingly adding the following line:
/dev/sda2 /mnt/data ext3 defaults 0 2

Following boots, it seems to work well. The problem I have is about a storage
"black hole" regarding this partition.
When the partition is mounted as ext3 (like now) df says it has 155M of occupied
space.
When I 'ls -l' the mount-point, there's nothing there.
In the meanwhile, GParted says that the partition is over 320M occupied.
Now I'm not petty - but 300M is some room for storage, and so are 150M; But most
of all I'm buffeled.
I'm uncertain as to what's going on.
Further more, if I use GParted to format the partition to 'fat32', both df and
GParted agree - that nothing is taken up - or so I understand.

What's going on. What should I do?
P.S. I ran fsck on this partition - it is OK.

(I attached screen outputs showing this blackhole issue)

I have 2 comments:
1. The current most up to date Ubuntu version is 9.04 (for the past 2 months) - code name "Jaunty Jackalope".
You can also use "ext4" as a file system.

2. When you mounted those 10G partition, did you specifically marked them to be deleted (formatted) before?
My guess is that the partition table is "not clean" somehow (residues in those 10G).

Hagai,

A. Thanks for the info.

B. It seems as if you're right on the spot.
From the moment I set the fs to be vfat,
I get the following fsck message, on each boot:

===FSCK LOG BEGIN===
sck 1.41.3 (12-Oct-2008)
fsck.ext3: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/sda2
/dev/sda2:
The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2
filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2
filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock
is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:
     e2fsck -b 8193 <device>

fsck died with exit status 8
===FSCK LOG END===

What should I do then: I generally wish for it to be an ext3 fs.
How can I format it to the correct type?

David,
Did you try to use the "Gnome Partition Editor" (gparted) in Ubuntu?
I ran it and from what I saw, I think you should do the following:
1. Completely delete this partition (it will shown as unformatted area in the partition table).
2. Format it to "ext3" (I don't know if there is also an option of "quick format" which means the format only affects the partition table, but if there is, don't!!! use it).
3. Pray ...

:)

Hope this helps

Thanks again Hagai - I followed your advice and left the upgrade for a new full
installation - simpler and faster!

OK,
So I had an electricity breakdown, and my secondary hard-disk (/dev/sdb1, ext3),
with all my files, crashed.
What I am getting is (from /var/log/fsck/checkfs ):

Log of fsck -C3 -R -A -a
Sat Aug 8 07:17:53 2009

fsck 1.41.4 (27-Jan-2009)
fsck.ext3: No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/sdb1
/dev/sdb1:
The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2
filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2
filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock
is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:
     e2fsck -b 8193 <device>

fsck died with exit status 8

Any ideas how to proceed?

Well Tomer, I am speaking out of my arse, but why not just do what fsck
suggests?
Why not run
e2fsck -b 8193 /dev/sdb1
?

Data on drive, is stored in units called blocks - usually very small ones,
usually the size 0.5-4KB each.
So a regular mp3 file, spans thousands of blocks on the drive.
The superblock, is a special block, containing the drive's Metadata - that is,
it contains the drive's ID. If this is lost, you'll have a hard time restoring
your data, though it's possible.
Generally if any block of data is lost, then... Well the data on that block is
obviously lost - and generally speaking so is the file that stores part of its
data on that block.
However, the ext2/3 creators made redundant copies of the superblock. This
copies are stored in known blocks across you hard-drive. As it seems, one of
those is block # 8193.
Running the above suggested command, will tell e2fsck to assume the superblock
is located at block #8193. The first thing it will do, is to go to that block,
and fetch its internal data. If that block seems like a superblock - then e2fsck
will treat it as such, and will copy its contents back to the normal location of
the superblock (usually block 1 or 0). On the next boot (or mount), you'll see
your files back, hopefully.
