High Desert Online, the local internet provider for Big Valley, will be
putting up a repeater at the GSSP site and offering us free wireless
internet service. We should have enough bandwidth for email and basic
web surfing, but the following guidelines will apply (basically we need
to keep bandwidth usage down to the bare essentials):
a) Avoid heavy bandwidth usage. No movies, no heavy downloads or uploads of
megabyte size pictures. No music downloads etc.
b) Normal web surfing avoiding downloads of big files should be fine. Email
without up or downloading gigantic JPG's etc should be avoided.
c) For those who are comfortable with setting their email clients to "fetch
headers only" which will flag you if there are any large attachments before
downloading them, please do so.
d) Since you are "creatures of the night" we ask you to do any heavy internet
usage after midnight. Our hard working ranchers should be asleep by then and
won't need bandwidth.
e) Don't let your children hog bandwith with facebook, myspace, music
downloads etc.
f) Keep an eye on the system speed. If it slows down and you see lots of star
party usage, hold your traffic till later.
