Greetings,
Yes... we're planning on July 10-14. Nothing is final until registration
opens; but they are the only dates that make sense.

Any dates in mind for GSSP 2010?
New moon is June 12th and July 11th, the first perhaps a bit too early,
and the second certainly later than the last two years.
It looks like July 9-12 might be the most popular option...??

I improved a bit the resolution of the Milky Way timelapse I took during this past GSSP. You'll need to click on the full-screen icon (bottom-right) , make sure HD is "on" and scaling is "off" in order to view it at the best resolution possible.
There's a small jump around the middle of the video (the camera ran out of batteries and I wasn't watching!) and the transition to blue after the center of the galaxy goes out of the FOV could be improved, but I left it as it came out, not being an expert in video processing at all. Maybe next time!
I've also learned a few things - first, if you're going to spend hours taking a timelapse, PLEASE take your time at first to make sure your camera isn't tilted at all :-). Second, a timelapse should be framed horizontally (landscape), not vertically. Third, forget
YouTube. Use a site that accepts true HD videos (I used Vimeo this time, though there are others). Fourth, a car isn't the best foreground item you probably want in a landscaped timelapse ;-) Etc...

You can try downloading the original .avi file. Just go to the same
page, scroll down and in the "download" section (under "statistics") you
should see the link. However, in theory you should have more luck by
playing it right on the web page, since that's a "flash" video, and any
browser with flash installed should work - while for the .avi you'll
need the right codecs (H.264 in thiss case), etc.
FYI - because the video is so short, you need to wait until the whole
video has been downloaded to your browser, only then it'll start playing.

I have to say. RBA's video of the Milky Way brings you right back to the nights at GSSP (not the real cold night) (or the stormy night) but one of the good ones.

Thanks! Start with open clusters, they will help you draw accurate star fields,
which are the key to getting the shape/proportions of DSOs correct (relative to
the surrounding stars).
No tracking, though I am interested in building an EQ platform for it at some
point... It does make it difficult to draw, especially at high power. I have
gotten better about 'locking' the view in with a few key stars, and then
repositioning them to the correct location before drawing each time. It is
obviously a constant back-and-forth of get dark-adapted and study object for 10
mins, then alternate with quick views and drawing key elements to outline it,
then another long observation session to get more details, etc. I try to
describe the characteristics and shapes while studying them, so I can draw more
at once from memory without needing to check the view as often. Sometimes the
object is long-gone from the view after 5+ mins of continuous drawing from
memory.
I draw with various white charcoal pencils on black paper using eraser and
smudge sticks as well.

I want to try DSOs. Have you added tracking to litebridge? I find with no
tracking, drawing can be a tough row to hoe. What did you use to do the drawing?

Ivor... I have the t-shirts which weren't picked up. I'm not sure we have any extras at this point. I'll let you know after I finish the end-of-event financial report. What size are you looking for?Â
Right. The great internal debate. I'm glad to see Ozer sent out the question
in the survey!

Thanks to everyone who organized and to those wonderful fellow stargazers who
assisted my son and I setting up, etc. We had a great time even if we did get
rained out the first night.
Has any decision been made as to the date for next year's GSSP? I'd like to

Thanks

I finally had some time to undust some of the photos I took during GSSP.
<snip a roo>
Yeah, it takes time, patience and practice. I used to
photograph a lot and now don’t do that as often. And no, the camera does not
make as much of a difference as the “nut” behind the lens. I took this term
from a photography forum. One can have a $10k camera and lens and still take garbage.
Randy does take his time and frames his shots appropriately.
Very nicely done. Great eye for the shots.
