Paul,
Re: http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/grandcanyon/
This "Grand Canyon" group that you posted to is dead and inactive. I
suggest the following groups instead:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Grand_Canyon_Hikers/
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/The_Grand_Canyon/
For reasons unknown to me, the original group's name was changed
before informing everyone it would be changing. This happened in
summer 2004. The net effect was that the discussion group suddenly
seem to disapear. Many people have since re-found it but a number of
people have not.
The original yahoo Grand Canyon Hiking discussion group has been
renamed to "Grand_Canyon_Hikers". It can be found here:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Grand_Canyon_Hikers/
You may subscribe to a mailing list as individual emails, daily
digest of email, or read messages on the web site. The focus of this
group is hiking in Grand Canyon. The hard-core backpackers, hikers,
and group that you may remember is here.
About the same time this name-switch fiasco happened, another Grand
Canyon discussion group was formed. (Perhaps, as a result of the
first one disappearing but I'm not sure about that.) This 2nd group
tends to be a little more general (not just a hiking focus)and a
little more chatty. It is named "The_Grand_Canyon" and can be found
here:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/The_Grand_Canyon/
The same mailing options are available.
Again, I'm not sure of the exact history and reason for name changed
but this is the net effect. There are now 2 yahoo GC discussion
groups. Turns out that there is a large overlap of participants in
the 2 groups. There have also been some small squables which
have caused some to leave one group for the other.
I suggest you check out both. Hiking questions are prob. best
addressed by the "hiking group" but they'll likely suggest you first
check out a couple suggested web sites for basic information than ask
questions.
Highly recomended sites for Grand Canyon hiking and other info are:
GC Explorer: http://www.kaibab.org
Hit the Trail: http://www.hitthetrail.com
GC NP: http://www.nps.gov/grca/
GC NP (in depth): http://www.nps.gov/grca/grandcanyon/
This background information should prob. be added to this original
group("grandcanyon") to help people find good GC discussion and to
help people re-find the old group. FOr that matter, this group should
prob. be deleted.
Hope this helps explain the situation and helps you find good GC
information. Please join us in these new groups.
