After some discussions with an Italian friend and my attempt at strawberry wine,
I was surprised to find that the Italian wine Fragolino was actually the grape
Isabella.
This would explain a broke up conversation I had in Italy with a bar owner. He
spoke no english but proudly offered his finest, what I discounted as a
strawberry wine, but must have been Fragolino.
I have really got to practice my Italian!!

With this new knowledge I am curious to try growing some Isabella. Are there
any sources for this that are true to the original "strawberry" grape? What
zone can they be grown in? Are there other issues about growing it?
Thanks,
Scott

Fragolino is indeed Isabella, which is also grown in Austria, where it is
called Uhudler. Although the European Union tried to eliminate these old
American grapes, grown since the 1870s right after the phylloxera crisis,
local traditions resisted the Œgrape policeı--as they have in France as
well--and there now are exceptions to the law which allow the cultivation,
wine production and limited sales of these types of wines.

Iıve grown and made Isabella wine. The grape is bullet-proof (which explains
its success in Europe!) and the vine is beautiful. I donıt know of any
source for rooted vines, but it roots easily from cuttings. You can get
cuttings from the USDA grape repository in Geneva.

I know there have been some discussions about cider and growing apples here
before, so I thought Iıd add a bit of information that, with the help of
Peter Cousins at Geneva, I recovered in my old, feeble brain.

Growing cider apples is easy, making cider is even easier. The best place to
get cider apple trees is

http://www.cumminsnursery.com/

started by Jim Cummins, formerly an apple rootstock breeder at Geneva. These
people *really* know what theyıre doing, theyıre wonderful to deal with, and
they have the best catalogue of varieties in the country, so far as I know.
Give it a thought.

How much acreage are you (did you) try to cover? At my above #'s, at the 100
gal/acre rate, your 3 gal backpack should do about 150' of row (this is
calculated on 9' rows).

This is the least intuitive forum I have been on! that said I will try
to comment on the pruning question. Two things(for the main part) have
to do with pruning. one, the shape and style of the vine, and the other,
how and where the fruit will be placed in the comming year. If you want
fruit spread out down the wire , then by all means, lay the cane down
the wire and let the buds fall where they will. If you want the fruit
to lie at the head of the main trunk, try the second choice. I like the
middle of the road on small plantings. If you have a cane that can be
strung along the wire and spread out the fruit, the do it! If the other
side of the vine is not so lucky, take the buds that you can and let
them bear fruit and leave the last bud to extend the cordon for next
year. Good luck on your planting,

bob
