Dear GG: I looked at your page promising a list of books and videos. I
didn't see any videos listed. Did I miss something? I am going to
substitute teach a horticulture class next week and would like to have a
visual aid. I can describe my vineyard and talk about a year in the

of a video. Any suggestions?

I'm not a soil expert and others might disagree, but
the soil is not much of a factor in grape acidity...
Temperature is the greatest factor....where warm
climates tend to produce grapes of less acidity than
cool climates....sorry for so simple an answer.
I suggest you re-post your message in a few days as
the list grows like wildfire....

Will increasing the alkalinity of the soil reduce the acidity of the
grapes?

It probably is related to your pruning ( or non pruning) as you suspect. You
just can't let the vine grow and get decent grapes. Somewhere you have to cut
canes or spurs back to two buds to encourage new young growth. The grapes
don't grow on second year growth, they grow on new canes or spurs from second
year and older growth. Get the Jeff Cox book as suggested.
Bob B
Hi,
I understand your dilema. I find that the book by Jeff Cox titled " Vines
into Wine " was a great help. It will answer your questions using everyday
language. ( there are a few minor mistakes). Also the books by Phillip Wagner
are even better!
Good luck
John
2nd year wood simply means that the canes which grow this
year will lose their leaves in Fall, and from this wood will grow
new canes next year that will produce grape clusters and other
new canes...
If you cut off all the new wood that grows each year, then you
usually get very small grape production, although if you cut all
new canes back to their origin, there is usually still a bud there
that will produce a new cane and consequently grapes....
Now....with that said, some varieties produce grapes from buds
close to the base of the cane....these vines are pruned leaving
just short stubs with one or two buds on them and this is called
spur pruning....others like most German varieties are pruned to
leave longer canes mainly because fruiting branches (canes) are
produced on buds further out on the cane....
There are a lot of good informational pages on pruning to be found
at GrapeSeek by searching for the word pruning....If you still need
help or are unclear, please write me back after visiting some of our
online resources.

Dear sir.
I do not know the name of my vine, but the colour of the grapes are greish
green when ripe. I never get any fair amount of grapes at all and I blame
it to my way of pruning. I was told the fruit comes on the 2nd year wood,
but I must have failed to discern the proper type of wood as they do not
differ much in colour ans size. Could you give me some advise?

Hi Michel & List.
Scenario:
I'm a newbie from S.W. Oz. Local climate is similar to San Diego (USA) and
Cape Town (S.Afr.) viz classic mediterranean. Summer highs moderated by a
cooling s.w. breeze off the southern Indian Ocean. (nice white beaches
too!!!)
I'm at a low 5.6 m above sea level [viz Aust. Height Datum =AHD] and
drainage is not the best viz saturated soils <5 days at a time, for >3
months in winter. Mounds and drains help, and a fall of 1:200 seems to shed
the worst of it.
Soils are brown earths/loam to clay and occassional deposits of leached
white sands. (I'm on the bend of a sluggish ancient river that has changed
course many times and there have been many depositional phases=various
layers upon layers.)
2.5 acres targeted for vine trial is primarily on brown earth/loam. pH is
average of 5.
Advice is use of Ramsey rootstock ex UCLA (Davis). I guess I'll need to add
heaps of AgLime & dolomite to raise pH.
Also quite high iron levels in soils and artesian water supply; and
manganese in soil (I believe).
Conditions reminded me of the milieu in Prof. Bob Poole's "Grape Production
in New York" linked to one of your sites. {Tho climate obviously more like
Cal)
Has me wondering if a V.lambruscana rootstock variety with the resistance
features of Ramsey might be better for my soil types, particularly in view
of low pH.
Any ideas/contribution from self or others would be most appreciated.
I like to learn!
Regards from West Oz, where its getting warm (and we worry about the East
Timor tragedy), John Allen. <aviark@...>

I guess anyone can post to this list without even joining the

I own and operate a dry land wheat ranch in north central oregon along
the banks of the columbia river, at the east end of the columbia river
gorge near the mouth of the john day river. The place where I have
chosen for my experiment is 1000 feet in elevation with deep soil (fine
sandy loam) at ph level 6.8 anually we recieve aroun 14-16 inches per
year. the vinyard will be planted next spring into this years crop
residue after spring tillage. I anticipate 12 ft between rows due to
the size of my equipment and to take advantage of moisure holding
capacity of our soil. intend to drip irrigate as necessary. I know
absolutely nothing about vinyards and am playing catch up this winter
any suggestions about my project are welcome. My plan is to try and
establish 2 or so acres then if succesful and also if we are successful
in finding buyers (i would prefer long term with a winery that could
also act as a consultant) we will drill another well and plant as many
acres as we can get water for.
John,

I'm Michel White, the owner of

The grapechat site will soon be up and the last two
are in reserve right now...
I'm from Massachusetts originally, moved to NB, Canada
and have been in the military since 1991 and am now
permanently in Germany.
GrapeGrowing has been my passion/hobby since I was a kid
(about 20 years now) and I spend most of my time trying
to improve the websites and help people with grape
growing problems...I have a small tract of land in the
Stuttgart area where I test many varieties and expect
to purchase my own 5 acre vineyard here as soon as I
find one available in one piece...
George is from Maryland and is a friend and partner
and has a website:
http://www.erols.com/gmead
and he consults more than I do and has more vines...
We work together on GrapePictures.com and he will
be working on PlanetOftheGrapes.com where we will
have all the growing info for all of the varieties
listed at http://www.grapepictures.com
I hope that's a start...and George will be glad to
hear from you at gmead@...
Also, if you just post your list ideas to the list,
( grapesrus@egroups.com )
instead of to me, then we'll all get to know each
other better....
Have a grape day!

Can you give us the location of your vineyard and the type
of vines and rootstock you'll be planting....this impacts the
spacing, as well as the type of harvesting you plan on and
how you intend to care for the area between the rows....and
whether or not you have mechanical equipment to harvest or
work the soil with...

I know that there is a trend among growers to switch over to Organic
growing methods. If you are an Organic grower, what products are you
using with your Organic grapes? Also, what did you have to go through
with your plants to qualify your plants as grapes that are Organically
grown? What is done in your state to make certain that your cultural
practices are in line with Organic growing methods?
