Yes it was a excellent obit about Larry. He is one person who should have
recieved the order of canada a longtime ago. I know when he was working for the
LCBO he was nomanated but the LCBO would not indorce him. I know he is not
around to injoy the honor but I have been in touch with my MP and MPP to see
what can be done in his  behalf. I think we should all as friends  do the same
in honor of a friend and colleague.
You will be missed. Maurice Lounsbury , ( Niagara area)

Larry Paterson, widely known as Little Fat Wino, has died. Larry was very
important to Canadian wines and grapes, both professional and amateur. Many on
this list knew his website well, and learned a lot from it, and from him.

Larry was a very cool guy, his death is a real loss. Here's a nice obit:

Well, the final issue is finished.
I am printing it myself and have started mailing it out, in drips and drabs.

Some of you may have already gotten your copy.
The rest should go out this week.

I have one copy already returned for a bad address. The subscriber did not
change his address with me, and it costs me $1.22 re-mail them, so he won't
be getting a copy unless he can compensate me for the lost postage.

If there are any other subscribers who have changed their mailing addresses,
but who have not notified me, you must do so now.

I appreciate you patience, and hope you like it. I may continue as an
on-line version, but have not decided yet.

If I owe anyone a refund for unfulfilled issues after this one, let me know
and I will take care of it.

I will be out of town traveling over the winter, but will be in touch by
email.

Will look for our copy in the mail.  I had hoped it would not come to this,
that your nature would have found a way to keep the idea alive, even in a lesser
form.  If an on-line version is the way to move forward until a more lucrative
time returns, then so be it.  Thank you for what you have brought to those of
us with similar interest and aspirations.

Time, then you could use some assistance with your schedule?  Maybe forming out
some of the details to others, so as to reduce the burden.

Then, maybe its just will, as the thing in low supply.  I have more time than
sense, and yet I find myself less productive than when there was more piss and
vinegar to go around.

If we could find a cure for energy slumps, that would probably make it all
better for the majority.  Words are cheap, what you have done is, well, not yet
a done deal.

Glen,
That has been partially successful in the past, e.g. Bryan Irving, et. al.
But it only lasted for awhile. But it was appreciated, for sure.

So if you want to be thinking about some articles for the e-version, please
do.
Just take copious notes and pix, then when I get the details worked out, you

Mourvedre needs an awfully long growing season. I don't have any here, but a

Hi Jim,

How are things in Winchester? (or, as my SIL calls it, "Chinwhiskers" ! :) I'm
planning to use it in breeding, crossing with an extremely short-season, very
hardy riparia. Looking for something that will be happy in Montréal. (Long shot,
of course, but stranger things have happened.)

Even in KC we only have 180 frost-free days. But we've got 4000+ GDD !

I am not very good at grape growing... disease and bugs have been a mostly
losing battle thus far.  I have 36 vines in the ground, concord, cynthiana,
traminette, chardonel, niagra and a few others.  this will be another new years
resolution to get on a better spray schedule and maybe I'll actually get a

Thought you had to license them from Cornell. The Traminette can be rather

Here in N. Central Arkansas, I grow Cynthiana, Chambourcin, Landot Noir,
Couderc Noir, Vignoles, Vidal, and Chardonel. I am planting some Seyval to
try out. Only the Couderc Noir, and Vidal arn't working out so well here.
The Couderc just wont thrive, and I lost 1/2 of my Vidal to the Easter
Freeze a few years back. I have a total of 144 vines planted so far. Usual
harvest is around 2000 lbs of fruit, and I make 5 diferent wines each year,
total around 170 gallons.

I no longer grow grapes; I live on 5 acres of New England side hill rock.
However, I do look after a small vineyard for someone else. That vineyard is
all Seyval--except for a few unknowns.

Years ago I managed Mayhill Vineyard in Weare, NH for seven years. We had 5
acres in mature product. The last year I worked there we picked almost 15
tons of grapes off the vines. We grew Foch, De Chaunac, Aurora, Chancellor,
and Edelweiss. The De Chaunac were on Geneva Double Curtain and the Aurora
were on a low vertical system--a low cordon with catch wires. We used the
New York bud count pruning system. At picking we had 22-23 brix on the De
Chaunac and I don't recall the acid. I believe the Foch were close to the
same brix.

Perhaps this is more information than you are asking for, however you may
find it interesting.

Pest control: When I started we were using a dilute wet spray system that
consisted of a 100 gal tank, a PTO pump with vertical arms. Not only did it
take a great deal of time to spray, but the system used a large quantity of
pesticides. After seeing a small self powered SOLO air blast system at a
trade show I bought one without a tank and had it mounted to the back of our
tank frame. Then we plumbed it into the 100 gal tank. As a result we cut
our pesticide use by two thirds and got better coverage. As part of an
Integrated Pest Management system (IPM) I didn't start spraying until there
was a significant infestation.

Weed control: Again when I started we used several hard core herbicides.
Then we switched to Roundup. However, after T Jordan visited we bought a
Green Grape hoe. Two or three times a year I would hoe under the trellis.
If I found Poison Ivy I would give it shot of Roundup, but other than that
we stopped using herbicides under the trellises. I found I could mount a
spray head to the grape hoe arm and used it to spray Roundup as needed. The
last year I use about two gallons of Roundup for the entire growing year.
Most of this was used for spraying under the electric fence we used to keep
animals out.

One big problem we had were pruning's. After they were pulled off the
trellises they had to be either picked up, a time consuming process or
chopped up with a mower. We had a five foot brush hog type mower, but all
it did was cut off the parts that were sticking up. We found a used five
foot Italian flail mower at a local tractor dealer. It was one the best
tools we ever bought. It sucked up the vines and shredded them like a
chipper! After one trip through the vineyard you could walk down the rows
barefoot with no problem. We used grass as a ground cover and the flail
mower did a better job than the brush hog.

The biggest pest we faced were birds. For a few years we tried to put the
nets up by hand. It took us three or four weeks and as many people as we
could muster to put the nets on five acres. After some trial and error I
came up with a net laying machine that I had the local welder build for us..
With the new tractor mounted net layer we could do the whole thing with two
people in a week. We could pick up in about the same time.

Sadly the owner ripped the vineyard out the year after I left. I have no
idea where the equipment went.

Here in Northern Kentucky growing zone 6a approx 8 miles south of Cincinnati in
the Ohio River Valley.  We are successfully growing : Dornfelder, Reisling,
Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc all vinifera, understanding that clonal
variety, site selection and viticultural practices are critical for consistent
success with vinifera. As for hybrids Vidal Blanc,Seyval Blanc and most other
French hybrids do well in our terrior. The only hybrids I am aware of as being
somewhat problematic have been Traminnette and Chardonnel, which require site
selection and viticultural practices similiar to Vinifera so if your going to
the trouble grow Chardonnay and Reisling.   As for absolute don't grows in our
terrior ;  both Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot are a complete disaster just do not
grow well in NKY and generally fail. Hope this gives you some insight.  Larry

Just curious as to how many members are grape growers and what varieties
that they're growing.

One of the wineries that I am Winemaker at is located on the southern end of
Georgian Bay, Ontario and grows the following in their estate vineyard.
Baco Noir, Marechal Foch, Leon Millot, Chambourcin (1 row), De Chaunac (1 row),
Zweigelt, Sabrevois, St Croix (partial row), Marquette, Frontenac, Fronteanc
Gris, Geisenheim 318, Prairie Star, ES 6-16-30 (1 row), L'Acadie Blanc, La
Crescent and have exp plantings of V65232 (a cold hardy Chardonnay cross),
Cab-Foch (Blattner variety), Vignoles, 4 Kentville Research station crosses (KW
95-2, 96-2, 94-2 and 97-23), Brianna, ES 5-17 and Landal. There's also a limited
number of Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Auxxerois vines. We've also
had 2 mutations of Frontenac Gris to Frontenac Blanc.

You'll note that all of these have some degree of cold hardiness due to the
low's that can be had in this area. None of these get buried. In total there's
25 acres planted.
Most vinifera are just not cold hardy enough for this area.

Here in Northern Kentucky growing zone 6a approx 8 miles south of Cincinnati
in
the Ohio River Valley.

Terry,

Has that S. 12-393 been hardy for you? How would it compare to, say,
Foch/Millot?

Happy New Year to you and all the rest of you grape folks out there!!
