M-Sudoku
, a free mobile Sudoku game, runs on any phone with color display which supports J2ME CLDC 1.0 and MIDP 1.0 - don't be scared by acronyms, any mobile phone/PDA which offers "Java support" should be able to run the game.

Once you have downloaded the M-SuDoKu.jar file to your PC, send it to your mobile or PDA through infrared, bluetooth or (if you have it) connection cable (the most appropriate solution to use depends on your device and your PC...).
If the file transfer is successful, you will find the M-SuDoKu item installed in the game menu.

When you run the program, it will show you a SuDoKu grid: move the cursor using joypad (or, depending on your device model, numeric keys), press the fire button (or 5 key) and use numeric keys to enter a number in the selected grid.
Game menu allows you to choose the difficulty level (either Medium or Difficult), the grid background, game restart and exit (saving the current grid).

http://phonphun.altervista.org/eng/sudoku.html

From version 0.8.0 on, M-SuDoKu supports an unlimited number of grids!!!
Previous versions of M-SuDoKu used grids generated by the Composer class from Su Doku Solver Java application.

Facebook’s Insatiable Hunger for Hardware

Author: Om Malik

Updated: Facebook these days is doing everything in its power to imitate Google, recruiting the search giant’s sales people, poaching its senior executives and — most importantly — using infrastructure as a competitive advantage. Like Google, Facebook has figured out that the right web infrastructure is the difference between user delight and dismay. And like Google, Facebook is finding out that it isn’t cheap.

I’ve been trying to get a handle on Facebook’s infrastructure for some time, but so far have been unable to get the company to open up. The last time I reached out to them, back in January, I was hearing that they had between 1,200 and 1,500 servers, along with storage and switches from EMC Corp. and Force 10 Networks respectively. As it turns out, those server numbers weren’t even close to the total servers used by them.

The company is running around 10,000 servers, according to Data Center Knowledge, citing comments made by Facebook VP of technology, Jeff Rothschild, at a recent MySQL user conference. (See video of the panel.) Of the 10,000 servers, 1,800 are from MySQL and around 805 of them are memcached servers. In order to house its sprawling infrastructure, Facebook has leased data center space from DuPont Fabros in Ashburn, Va., and Digital Realty Trust in Santa Clara, Calif., DCK reports.

How much is Facebook spending on its infrastructure? The company isn’t going to tell us, but there are clues. Server and storage company Rackable today reported first-quarter 2008 sales of around $69 million. Facebook is one of its largest customers, accounting for around 10 percent of Rackable’s sales (that number could be higher, but we’ll have to wait for Rackable’s 10-Q to get a clearer picture), so some quick, back-of-the-envelope math reveals $7 million in spending by the social networking company. A well placed source of mine just let me know that Facebook is going to spend over $9 million more on servers this year. That should be good news for Rackable. Next on my list is an estimate of Facebook’s bandwidth and data center costs.

The hardware spending by startups like Facebook will be a topic of discussion at our Structure 08 conference, where we are hoping to learn more about the infrastructure secrets of all of today’s top (and fast-growing) web players.

Time for a Web 2.0 Vulture Fund?

Author: Om Malik

Brad Greenspan’s LiveUniverse is indeed buying personalized web page startup Pageflakes, the two confirmed today, bringing the curtain down on a critically acclaimed service that failed to gain much traction, mostly because it was chasing savvier competitors with deeper pockets.

The company blew through nearly $4.3 million and was close to running out of cash, as we first reported over the weekend. Their quick embrace of bargain-hunting Greenspan only adds credence to the rumors of them running out of gas.

But in the broader scheme of things, Pageflakes’ sale is not that big of a deal. Startups that fail to become category leaders either shut down or have to settle for the ignominy of being sold for pennies on a dollar — it’s standard operating procedure in Silicon Valley. And as the current Web 2.0 cycle runs out of steam, we’re going to see the startup equivalent of a brownout. I think there is a real opportunity here for someone to make money.

Back in the dark days of the telecom depression, some crazy mavericks started buying up distressed telecom assets, packaging them and flipping them for a nifty profit. More recently, many vulture funds have started buying out distressed real estate assets. Maybe it’s time for someone to start a Web 2.0 Vulture Fund, aggregating startups with decent technologies that have otherwise failed to get themselves off the ground.

Someone could, for example, roll up the social bookmarking startups with social news companies, or bundle Office 2.0 web apps. Aggregating web utilities such as online storage services, or online address books and calendaring services could be another opportunity.

How would such a fund be different than Greenspan’s Live Universe or Internet Brands? Those are companies with a roll-up strategy. In comparison, as Morgan Stanley notes, “Most vulture funds are limited partnerships, but some are retail mutual funds that are open to individual investors.” (The other option is a buyout fund specializing in distressed Web 2.0 assets.) You can help define the properties of this Web 2.0 Vulture Fund, either on your own blog or in our comments section. Or just email me directly.

If you don’t care much for that, answer this big question, dear reader: Which Web 2.0 company do you think is going to run out of steam and is worth being picked up by a Vulture Fund?

VCs Start the Year with a Whimper

Author: Stacey Higginbotham

The latest set of figures related to venture capital investing in the U.S. indicates that the growth will continue. But venture firms are battening down the hatches to prepare for a rough 2008, as the number of deals by stage shows a steady rise in late-stage rounds.

Because market conditions were ripe for public offerings of venture-backed startups for only a short time in 2007, there are still plenty of later-stage companies unable to make an exit. Sure, the M&A markets are still going strong, but according to Nina Saberi, a managing general partner with Castile Ventures, valuations are facing a lot of downward pressure.

Castile will continue funding companies with those facts in mind, she noted. In other words, if you¢re after a Series C, a big bundle of cash may be hard to find, since M&A is the most likely exit and acquirers are going to be more miserly. That¢s a shame, because a bundle of cash is what startups are going to need through any prolonged recession, especially if it stops businesses from buying software and hardware.

The money is still flowing. Venture capitalists invested $7.1 billion in 922 deals in the first quarter of 2008, according to the MoneyTree Report from PricewaterhouseCoopers and the National Venture Capital Association. But it was a decline from the $7.5 billion invested in first quarter of 2007 when VCs funded 861 deals. Quarterly investment activity was down as well, falling 8.5 percent from the fourth quarter of 2007, when $7.8 billion was invested in 1,045 deals.

John Taylor, vice president of research with the NVCA, pointed out the deal volumes in the first quarter tend to be lower than those in the rest of the year. As the number of deals done in the fist quarter of this year is still above those of previous years, he¢s optimistic that the industry will continues its slow and steady growth, even despite an economic recession.

Most industries received less money than they had in the fourth quarter with 11 of the 16 industries experiencing a decrease in the level of investment and 14 of the 16 experiencing a decline in deal volume. Only semiconductors saw an increase in both the number of deals and dollars, with $556 million invested in 50 deals. Although when asked specifically about the future of mature industries such as chips, Saberi wasn¢t as optimistic, saying it wasn¢t an area that was good for early-stage investing. Given the expense and technical difficulties that come with designing chips, she¢s probably wise to steer clear.

Effectively Prevent Oracle Minimum Downtime Migration Error!!

Author: Steve

Every database administrator aims to perform database migration with minimal downtime. There are lots of tricks that help you accomplish this task without the need to adopt the slow and cumbersome export/import approach. However sometimes it happens that we get stuck in the migration process where errors tell us nothing about it.

Consider a scenario where have production database Oracle 10.1.0.3 (32-bit) and we wanted to migrate it on one server to 10.2.0.3 (64-bit) on another server with downtime of one hour.

We will follow below approach to accomplish the migration with minimum downtime.

Back up the production database:

First of all we will use RMAN to back up our production database a NAS array (/nas)

Create Instance:

Now we will create an instance on the new server (64-bit 10.2.0.3).

Restore Controlfile:

Then we will restore the controlfile from /nas

Restore Database:

Now we will restore the database to the new server.

Start Database in Mount Mode :

Now we will start the database on the new server in mount mode.

Archive Logs:

Now periodically copy archive logs from the old server, catalog them on the new server and recover database over and over. Continue this process until you are ready perform migration.

Start Database in Restricted Mode:

Now shut down the production database and start it in restricted mode. Then archive log current and shut it down again.

Apply Final Archive Log:

Now apply the final archive log to the new server and try ¡alter database open resetlogs upgrade'

Run catupgrd.sql Script:

Now run below command

@?/rdbms/admin/catupgrd.sql

When trying to sun this step we get ORA-20000 error after about 5 minutes.

ORA-20000: Insufficient privileges to analyze an object in Dictionary Schema

ORA-06512: at "SYS.DBMS_STATS", line 13323
ORA-06512: at "SYS.DBMS_STATS", line 13649
ORA-06512: at "SYS.DBMS_STATS", line 15985
ORA-06512: at "SYS.DBMS_STATS", line 16027
ORA-06512: at line 2

The error has occurred during execute dbms_registry.gather_stats(null); command of running cmpdbmig.sql.

If we run below command to see if dbms_stats has the same issue then we get a little different error saying that insufficient privileges or the object did not exist.

BEGIN dbms_stats.gather_table_stats('SYS', 'SOURCE$'); END;

*
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-20000: Unable to analyze TABLE "SYS"."SOURCE$", insufficient privileges or
does not exist
ORA-06512: at "SYS.DBMS_STATS", line 13046
ORA-06512: at "SYS.DBMS_STATS", line 13076
ORA-06512: at line 1

Below command tell us that we are logged in as SYS.

SQL> show user
USER is "SYS"

SQL> desc source$

     Name                   Null?                   Type
     ----------------- --------------   -------------------------------
      OBJ#              NOT NULL          NUMBER
      LINE               NOT NULL          NUMBER
      SOURCE                              VARCHAR2(4000)

This is really a frustrating situation where errors do not tell us anything and hence we are unable to figure out the problem.

The reason why we got this error was because we did not add a tempfile to the TEMP tablespace before running the catupgrd.sql script. There will not be a temporary tablespace anymore if you restore from backup. And hence we stuck in ORA-20000 error due to insufficient privileges to analyze an object in dictionary schema.

You can solve this problem by running below command before running catupgrd.sql script.

SQL> alter tablespace temp
     add tempfile '/u01/app/oracle/oradata/temp01.dbf' size 1000M;
Tablespace altered.

SQL> exec dbms_stats.gather_table_stats('SYS', 'SOURCE$');
PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.

Change packages from 32-bit to 64-bit:

Finally we will shutdown and then start up the database. Then run utlirp.sql and utlrp.sql scripts so as to change packages from 32-bit to 64-bit.

I met money one day. I said, "You are just a piece of paper." Money smiled and said, "Of course I'm a piece of paper, but I haven't seen a dustbin yet, in my life"

Not Such a Happy Friday at Dell, AT&T and AMD

Author: Stacey Higginbotham

I was at a very crowded High Tech Happy Hour event last night in Austin, and I speculated that attendance was so robust because people are once again out looking for jobs. I was quickly told no, people were out looking for deals and few folks were worried about their job situation.

Maybe they should be. The economy isn¢t doing well, and several technology firms are looking at ways to cut costs, either as a response to the economy or merely to keep a struggling ship afloat. Yesterday, AMD cut 420 workers worldwide, including 215 in Austin, as a step towards its stated goal of reducing its workforce by 10 percent (680 people).

Also affecting Austin were layoffs at computer manufacturer Dell Inc. I don¢t have details about the move, but was told by two Dell employees that cuts were made on Thursday, likely as part of the PC maker¢s announced c10 percent workforce cuts. Today, telecommunications company AT&T said it would lay off 1.5 percent of its 300,000-member workforce. Spokesman Brad Mays says that number will be less than 5,000 jobs spread across the company. However, no customer-facing positions would be affected.
