hey gang
devon, chaya, angela & myself have been meeting regarding some possible
grants for g/w food connection. thanks, devon, for the much needed
initiative & infusion of energy! there are a few prospective grants we
are working on right now.
i now have the binder in my hot little hands, and have been reviewing
the material for the grant writing. i have noticed a few gaps in the
information, and due to some earlier computer woes, i do not have copies
of previous notes or minutes.
if you have any notes or minutes, especially from the strategic planning
& follow up sessions, could you please forward them to me? we did great
ground work, and that information is extremely helpful in the grant
writing process. thanks.
happy eating,
paula
hi
i spoke with sheena king on wednesday regarding the fruit tree project's
experience in applying for city $. the city was encouraging, but they
have limited funds, and once a community group is funded, they generally
continue to receive funding, making it more difficult for new applicants
to get their foot in the door. it would be good to cultivate a
relationship, but not to expect funding, at least in the first go
around, especially with the newness of g/w food connection.
i have been playing phone tag with zinnia, and hope to connect with her
when i return from the sunshine coast on monday evening to pick up the
binder. must dash for the ferry....

Hi folks,
I chatted yesterday with Lezlie Wagman, who's the coordinator of the SMART fund
with VCH. As I mentioned at the meeting, they have some funds available to
match projects funded through the City innovations funds that we're considering
applying for.
What I learned from Lezlie is that the SMART fund has up to $60,000 that they
can use to match grants. Most likely this will be for 4 projects, as each of the
City projects can be funded to a maximum of $15,000.
Lezlie thought that our project would be a good fit with the SMART fund. What
she suggested is
a) in the City application, be careful about how we frame it - the City isn't
wanting to fund health-related projects (I'm guessing we would probably be best
framing it as a poverty-related project).
b) for the SMART fund, it needs to be strongly & clearly framed as a health
promotion project.
c) stress our existing partnerships, and how the project is or can tie in with
other things happening in the neighbourhood (eg. tie it in with Stone Soup,
farmers' market, etc). She was glad to hear that other agencies that receive
funding through SMART & VCH are involved (eg. the Multicultural Family Centre
and East Side Family Place) & saw that as an advantage.
d) mention clearly how we are connected & involve people from groups the SMART
fund sees as disadvantaged: "SMART prioritizes groups that have traditionally
experienced barriers to accessing good health and health services. These include
seniors, mental health consumers, children and youth, low-income families,
lesbian/gay/bisexual/ transgendered people, aboriginal communities, and people
with disabilities." - also folks from immigrant & refugee communities.
For more info about the SMART fund, check out...

Hey folks,
Here are the notes from today's food connection funding meeting. Thanks to folks
for coming out. I think it went well & we've got a good start!
We've booked the next meeting to be Wednesday July 13th, 2:30-4:30 pm & we can
hold the next meeting here at North again - & yes, in the large meeting room -
the one with all the toys.

Oh yeah - just to confirm, we're meeting at North Health Office, #200-1651 Commercial Drive - it's above VanCity, & door & elevator in is a little tricky to find, if you haven't been here before. The doorway & elevator are between VanCity & the little insurance shop that's on the south side of the Commercial Drive entrance to the mall. If you end up gettnig to the meeting late (eg. after 7 pm) there's a doorbell that you need to ring, that's high up on the left hand side of the doorframe.
See you tomorrow!

For those of you who'd be interested, here are a few potential meeting times.
COuld you email me back & let me know what would work & what wouldn't? i don't
know how daytimes vs. evenings work, so I've got a few of each. What do you
think - about a 2 hour meeting for starters, & if we need less time then great?
Mon 27th 9-11 am
Wed 29th 9-11 am
Wed 29th 3-5 pm
Wed 29th 6&9 pm
Thurs 30th 1&5 pm (but since the next day is a stat day & the beginning of a
long weekend, this might not be a popular time!)
Is this a time that folks can make? if not, let's look at the next week.
Angela, if you're not able to come, any chance you could email me a copy of the
template grant for the Collingwood Food Institute project?
Thanks loads,
devon

Sounds great to me Devon,
I am also meeting with the SFU Food Security group on
Tuesday (7pm - Family Activity Room, Brittania - email
Maryann at edoherty@... if you want to attend as
well) and should hopefully be receiveing our seed
money from her at that time. Does anyone want to get
together and talk about starting a mapping project?
Let's get some meetings happening again.

Hey folks,
I just got an email about this funding opportunity through the united way that i
thought gw food connection might want to consider applying for, for a particular
project or for a part-time coordinator or....? I can't remember who's on the
funding committee. The deadline is August 15th, which would give us about 2
months, but i'm not sure who's around for how much of the summer, so if you're
interested, we might want to try to set up a meeting to focus on this next week,
to get a start on it right away.
Whaddya think?

Hey folks, a few weeks ago, Zinnia, Chaya & I were talking about setting up a
funding meeting during the day some time, & also seeing if one of the
nutritionists at North could join us.
How does this sound to the rest of you who're on the fundraising cttee?
