---> [1] Slide talk: Pulau Ubin - Treasure
Island
Wed 12th Sep 2001: 7.15pm, Ang Mo Kio
Community Library
by Dr Chua Ee Kiam, author of "Ubin, Ours
to treasure"
All are welcome
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Pulau Ubin is one of the last strongholds
of our local heritage -
laid-back kampong and traditional Chinese
village scenes evoke
memories of a less hectic era in Singapore's
history. The island
is a miniature paradise of biological diversity;
where sea eagles
soar over coasts and wild pigs and jungle
fowl still rule the
forest.
But developments are fast changing the island.
Many villagers
have resettled on the mainland; leaving for
the comforts of
modernization. Some are still staying put,
eagerly savouring every
moment before they too are uprooted. Nature
areas are likewise
targetted for development. Tanjong Chek Jawa
will sadly be lost to
land reclamation.
Ee Kiam will show the beauty and rustic charm
of Ubin, the
flora & fauna, and talk about the changes
on the island.

Visits to Chek Jawa, Pulau Ubin by the NUS
Raffles Museum of
Biodiversity Research & friendswere successful.
More than 250
people came to visit, many touching, seeing
and feeling.
The guide assisted scheme worked, and the
bright orange hats
were scattered throughout the coast. Later
some of the guides
went for a high tide walk out to the marker
they had set up -
it was chest high 500m out!
The guidesheets will be left at their present
location in he
internet, for anyone to prepare guidesheets
for their children.
