         unedited photo galleries out!
<http://mangrove.nus.edu.sg/iccs/galleries/>
--------------------------------------------------------------------
The annual event saw more than 1,500 volunteers visit the beaches
and mangroves in an effort to not only clean the coastline, but also
to categorise and count the trash.

With a plethora of digital cameras, the galleries were up
almost immediately at:  <http://mangrove.nus.edu.sg/iccs/galleries/>

The mangrove cleanup was coordinated by the Raffles Museum of
Biodiversity Research, was held a week earlier to catch the low tide,
saw a group of more than 300 struggle to the site and attempt the
cleanup at the Buloh-Kranji mangroves.

In approximately 90 minutes, 2.7 tonnes of trash was removed, of
which 90% was plastic, 11.5% of which was from 2,637 straws!
See data summaries at <http://mangrove.nus.edu.sg/iccs/>

As the students walked out, a stream had to be crossed yet
data cards had to be kept dry. As the tide rose further, canoes
and boats transferred out the trash to the park for removal.

The beach cleanup coordinated by the Nature Society (Singapore) saw
approximately 1,300 people cleanup beaches in what turned out to be
a blazing sun. See <http://mangrove.nus.edu.sg/iccs/beach/>

As the last few data cards come in, the combined data will be
forwarded by the Nature Society (Singapore) to the Ocean
Conservancy in Washington, for global action. At a national
level, analysis will be followed by recommendations and education
programmes.
