---> [1] SPCA Celebrates World Animal Day 2001
at Parco Bugis Junction Fri 5th Oct - Sun 7th Oct 2001
--------------------------------------------------------------------
In celebration of World Animal Day 2001, the SPCA is planning a flurry of
events over a three-day period.
Fri 5th Oct - Sun 7th Oct: 11.00am - 9.30pm
at Parco Bugis Junction (the stretch along Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf)
The objective of SPCA organizing this three-day event is to create a greater
awareness of important issues such as animal abuse and responsible pet
ownership. At present, the SPCA takes in over 1,000 unwanted animals (pets
and strays) each month, and August 2001 also saw an all-time high in the
number of complaints of alleged abuse from members of the public.
At our World Animal Day 2001 celebrations, there will be:
* An exhibition detailing the work of the SPCA, including tips on
responsible pet ownership, details on pet sterilization, information about
animal abuse and much more.
* A pet advice corner, where members of the public can seek advice and
consult with the SPCA to determine if they are ready for the lifetime
commitment of buying a pet.
* Meet personalities with a passion for animals.
* SPCA merchandise will be on sale, from T-shirts to posters and our 2002
desk calendar! You can also get a head start on sending out those Christmas
cards as they will be launched then too.
* Fun activities for the young (and young-at-heart), from an arts and crafts
corner to animal balloon sculpturist and even face and hand painting!
* Video shows and stage shows
* Free World Animal Day posters and book marks.
The Society conducts the following services
1. A 24-hour Ambulance service for sick, injured and very young animals
which are rescued and brought to the SPCA consultant veterinarian.
2. Investigating complaints of cruelty.
3. Collection of unwanted pets.
4. Re-homing of unwanted animals.
5. Educational programme for schools.
6. Running a clinic for animals belonging to the general public and spaying
service for stray animals.
7. Operating a pound and a supporting quarantine service.
8. Humane euthanasia of animals.
The SPCA requires over $1.2 million annually to operate. This comes
primarily by way of donations from members of public and from fund-raising
activities such as the Annual Flag Day, Jumble Sale, Donation boxes,
T-shirts, sale of Christmas cards and other events, including this Wine
Tasting Event.
Over 1,000 animals are received monthly by the Society. Every month, 30 dogs
and 20 cats, some rabbits and some hamsters, find new homes through the
SPCAs adoption schemes. And as long as an animal is put up for adoption, it
will stay with the SPCA till it is adopted or, in some cases, for the rest
of its life.
The SPCA is located at 31 Mount Vernon, S(368054), Tel: 287-5355.
