Dear all,
This was on The Straits Times, 6th July 2002, Home Section: “How do you
live? The URA wants to know.” It is randomly targeting 2500 people on their
lifestyle and housing choices but also have an online version for all
Singaporean, at <http://www.ura.gov.sg/lifestyle>
The purpose is so that "we can tailor the nation's land use plans to
people's changing needs."
The findings would be use in next year's review of the Singapore's Master
Plan.
Although the survey seems to be geared towards addressing housing and the
ancillary needs, certainly nature appreciation should be featured as one of
those needs. In fact, the last round of feedback by the focus groups have
clearly highlighted this. This is another opportunity for us to reiterate
this need.

Ed’s note: The survey takes about 10 minutes to finish. Interestingly,
nature is an option is featured in this survey. A survey is apparently in
preparation for people between 13-34 years of age.

This Sunday’s ride in Pulau Ubin starts off through kampungs and lots of
fruit trees (durians in season, but please do not enter private property!),
termite mounds, and a short stretch through rubber plantations before
emerging into a bund through mangroves and prawn ponds before ending
at Noordin beach.
The ride is easy as it is paved most of the way. If you have not been
riding for a long time, use this opportunity to get on the saddle again!
The route back is variable and will depend on your guide and how energetic
you feel.
During the recce last week, some of us were lucky enough to see
the resident hornbills and semi-resident birders Sutari Supari & gang
conducting an annual census of birdlife.
Ubin has been given a reprieve from wholesale development but the
changes have left their mark on the island. See it for yourself on Sunday.
