Animal Welfare in Singapore
In the last issue of Habitatnews, some rather startling statistics surfaced from SPCA. 10,839 animals taken in by the SPCA in 2002 while the number of
adoptions in 2002 were 1,003.
We have read and heard of many awful incidents. But there are people in
Singapore, who have tried to alleviate this problem. Thankfully, organised
efforts like SPCA’s are no longer solitary. Each contributing by education,
rehoming, shelter and enforcement helps.
The internet is helping to spread this message, so drop by their webpages.
Some are very professionally done, but the message is simple and these sites
provide an indication how we are each able to help.
You can visit most of the shelters – check their webpages for details. And
this Sunday, NSS conducts a Fun with Frog Workshop for kids.

-------------------------------------------------------------------The Nature Society (Singapore)'s Education Group has been running a monthly
"Fun with Nature" workshop series for children. Fun with Birds (January) and
Fun with Bugs (February) were a success with the children loving it. IN
April they will conduct "Fun with Fish" but this Sunday it's “Fun with
Frogs!” It is a good way to learn about animals in a responsible manner.
Just email vdroza@... your names and telephone numbers by this
Saturday. Then just turn up, pay a small fee for a fun morning at the
Botanic Gardens this Sunday.
Fun with Frogs for Kids with NSS’ Education Group.

11, come join us as we learn more about these beautiful amphibians.
Bring your family and friends, and meet us at the Singapore Botanic Gardens

'NANAS originated in Singapore in 1995. Raymund Wee set up an animal shelter
in Jalan Kayu, Seletar. Raymund sold off his shophouse and with the S$1.5
million dollars, transformed NOAH'S ARK into one of the foremost private
animal shelters in Singapore.
In March 2000 the land lease at Jalan Kayu ended and Raymund Wee lost the
tender for a new lease of the land. Singaporean Mr CK Choo stepped with the
offer of a plot of land at Pekan Nanas, Johore to house the orphans. NOAH'S
ARK was given a new lease in life.'

'In July 1999, a newspaper published a report about 5 kittens being burned
alive in a box. Outraged by this and other senseless acts of cruelty towards
innocent animals occurring in Singapore everyday, a few friends got together
and decided to help other harmless stray cats and kittens that live amongst
us. The Cat Welfare Society (Singapore) was officially approved and
registered on 23 October 1999.'
