From the Cat Welfare Society webpage:
OPEN HEARTS, OPEN MINDS - A Pet Adoption Drive
National Youth Park, opposite Orchard Cineleisure, near Somerset MRTSat & Sun, 26-27 July 2003: 10am - 6pm
Jointly organised by the Cat Welfare Society, Action for Singapore Dogs and the House Rabbit Society of Singapore.
“Open Hearts, Open Minds” is the first joint adoption drive by the Cat
Welfare Society, Action for Singapore Dogs and the House Rabbit Society of
Singapore since the intensified killing of homeless animals by the
authorities.
In the last month or so, many homeless animals have been given temporary
homes by volunteers and members of the three welfare groups - a lot more
than is usual because of the intensified killing and of SARS. So now more
than ever, it is imperative that we find good, loving homes for all these
animals that have been taken off the streets, some of whom cannot be
released back to where they were rescued, as it would only endanger their
lives.
The phrase “Open Hearts, Open Minds” was selected as the title of our
adoption drive, because we want Singaporeans who come to the event, to do so
with open hearts and minds. A big, open heart is needed to welcome these
homeless animals into warm and happy homes, while an open mind is needed so
that not only the cute and young furbabies (also known as kittens, puppies
and baby rabbits) find homes, but also the adult, less good-looking ones.
From our experience, the little ones stand the best chance of going home
with a new family, while grown cats, dogs and rabbits, especially of the
non-pedigree variety are almost invariably left behind. Prejudices against
adult animals, black cats, local dogs, clipped-eared animals etc, must be
fought against and overcome. Animals lovers need to find it in their hearts
to love all the animals, not just the small, cute ones.
At this event, we will also be raising awareness on responsible pet
ownership and the benefits of humane methods of managing the stray animal
population in our community. Merchandise such as t-shirts, cards, bookmarks
and mugs will also be on sale to raise funds for the societies.”

---> [2] Film Formations’ series, “Nature at our Doorstep” Episode V: Thu
24th July 2003, Mediacorp TV12 Arts Central, 9.30pm
http://habitatnews.nus.edu.sg/news/naod/index.htmlepisode was pulled for the Shark Special. The producer Melissa Ong emailed
me to say, “ Aiyah! TV12 just told us a few min ago that Ep 5 of "Nature at
Our doorstep" has been pushed back to next wk because of their special
"Shark Week" this week. (Nobody told us ! and we were rushing the ep out
like mad today...)
Very sorry abt the inconvenience caused - esp with the 'habitatnews'
announcement for the show!
Apologies to all! Mel”
Interestingly this tells you how current the editing and filming is - they
are still shooting episodes. Recently I dragged them out to Mandai mangroves
and mudflats. They are a game crew and I think enjoyed the mudwalk
experience, amidst the danger of losing expensive equipment. (A couple of
photos at the webpage reference; I will setup the gallery later). Well, I
ended up losing my digital camera in the brackish water but at least some
photos survived in the memory stick!
Synopsis for Episode 5
From Samantha Sng, Film Formations“The new boardwalks of MacRitchie Nature Reserve are in the spotlight of
this week's Green Piece segment. Yandi takes a walk along the boardwalk to
see what he can discover in the secondary forest of MacRitchie Reservoir
Nature Reserve.
Green Shop this week takes us to see Mr. Ronnie Chew, an agro-innovator that
specializes in soy waste farming. Watch Mr. Chew as he turns the waste from
soy bean processing to rich fertilizer for his plants.
In Profile this week is Mr. Victor Wu, an activist for WildAid. He talks
about his passion for sharks and the importance of their conservation. Also
about the public's misconception of sharks.
In this week's Great Outdoors, Yandi attends the Seashore Life Workshop.
Jointly organized by HSBC and the National Environment Agency, it trains
trainee teachers about Seashore Life to better impart to their students the
knowledge.”
