---> [1] Film Formations’ series, “Nature at our Doorstep” Episode VI:
Thu 31st July 2003, Mediacorp TV12 Arts Central, 9.30pm
http://habitatnews.nus.edu.sg/news/naod/index.html

Last week’s episode was lovely – in the MacRitchie piece, they covered the
boardwalk’s contribution to combating erosion, why you should not feed
monkeys, problems of alien invasions and how animal release into the forest
may be damaging, showed great footage of animal life, particularly the
clouded monitor (compared it to the water monitor) - and that was all just
the first section, Green Piece! Victor Wu spoke calmly yet passionately
about sharks, an excellent job, and we saw soya waste recycled and
vegetables nutured by rehabilitating prisoners.  And there were two more
parts, all in 30 mins! This series can entertain and open eyes, so do
recommend it to friends!

Synopsis for tonight's Episode VI
From Samantha Sng, Film Formations

“In this week's Green Piece, Yandi meets up with A/Prof. Shawn Lum explore
the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve.  Expect to see some rare finds in one of the
largest nature reserves in Singapore.

Corporate policies are highlighted in Green Shop this week as the limelight
falls on HSBC. The segment looks at how the company extends these policies
to its staff and their company philosophies such as HSBC's Earthwatch
program.

Profiled this week is Mr Wong Yew Kuan. One of the most senior authorities
on nature in Singapore, Mr. Wong talks about his love for nature in
Singapore as well as his early efforts in surveying Bukit Timah Nature
Reserve as well as many other natural sites in Singapore.

In the Great Outdoors, we go birdwatching with Alfred Chia, the avifauna
enthusiast from the Nature Society Singapore BirdGroup. Viewers find out
where, when and how to go about seeking out some of Singapore's most
beautiful, yet very elusive birds.”

weekend! (^^) Thanks to Ria! You can subscribe to her email list by sending

---> [4] News archive at Ecology Asia
Nick Baker compiles a information on natural history in Asia with a bias on
Singapore, and all nicely presented at his Ecology Asia site:
http://www.ecologyasia.com/
This was first announced on 3rd January 2001 in Habitatnews 2001-01,
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/habitatnews/message/121

The section I find the most useful is the news archive. When I wanted to add
a link to reports about last year’s poll for a national bird for Nature Day,
a quick search on Google with “national bird nature day singapore” revealed
Nick’s archives. See:

---> [5] “Conservation work at Sungei Buloh Wetlands Reserve”, Sat 2 Aug: 3p
“Conservation work at Sungei Buloh Wetlands Reserve”,
Mr Ramakrishnan Kolandavelu (Assistant Parks Officer)
Sat 2 Aug: 3pm
Bukit Merah Community Library

Krish will talk on the mangrove areas in Singapore which are fast
diminishing from the original 13% of Singapore landmass to about 0.5% today.
This talk will feature conservation activities at Sungei Buloh Wetland
Reserve such as the bird ringing session and prawn harvesting sessions.
Krish has been working at the park for many years and originally supplied me
with the first sightings of otters since the mid-90’s. He has spent a lot of
time in the field gaining a lot of practical knowledge and is an engaging speaker.
