Richard Corlett on "The Science of Seed Dispersal",
Friday 15th Aug 2008: 4pm (LT20)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Richard Corlett is back in Singapore and announcing his return to the
Department of Biological Sciences (he was with the former Department
of Botany until 1987) is a seminar on seed dispersal.
He speaks with fascination of a subject that had Charles Darwin
experimenting with seed-eating fish fed to herons! Another enthusiast
is Singapore's own Henry Ridley, who produced a classical (must read)
synthesis based to a large extent on his experience as Director of the
Botanic Gardens in Singapore.
These days dispersal biology attempts to address the issue of dispersal
limitation (not all seeds reach favourable sites) and the confounding
extinction threat of many animal dispersers.
The revived science is now putting numbers on the speculations of
Darwin, and Richard promises "it's still cool stuff."

Cyrene Reef exhibit at Raffles Museum's Public Gallery
----------------------------------------------------------------------------Singapore's Natural Heritage - Cyrene Reef: West of Labrador Beach,
between Pulau Bukom and Jurong Island, Cyrene Reef sits right in the
middle of a busy shipping lane, revealing her wonders only during the low
tides. A long long sand bar flanked by lush sea-grass meadows and
lagoons of coral rubble, hide a rich marine diversity.
This new, small exhibit which showcases the beauty of Cyrene Reef and
her inhabitants is the result of a series of recent field trips. A special
feature includes the stars of Cyrene!
