Take a look on Lee's FAQ for the MV1 ipkg isntrcuts.

Do an
# ipkg update
then
# ipkg list

And see you you see Python and/or Java.

Currently, my HPMediaVault does not reveal its hostname to my linksys router
(acting as the DHCP server). On Debian Linux, I can edit the file
/etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf to un-comment the "Show-Hostname" option to have Debian
reveal its hostname to the DHCP server.

However, there is no such location on the HPMediaVault...

Does anyone know what file I must edit to allow the HPMediaVault to reveal its
hostname to the DHCP server?

Thank you,

I'm pretty sure my MVs reveal their hostnames. You have 2 MV2s, right? Did you load Debian on the other one? If so, which one will not reveal it's hostname?

The MV2 that I loaded Debian on reveals its hostname after I edited the
/etc/DHCP3/dhclient.conf file.

However, the stock MV2 does not reveal its hostname, and no such location exits
on the stock firmware.

Yeah, not sure what to do with the stock one, unless you want to look in the PHP subsystem for the file that configures DHCP. I'm pretty sure mine reveals it's hostname. Only thing I might suggest is shutting down the MV, deleting the DHCP lease on the router, then powering the MV back up again.

Hi Nelo,

Yes, an MV2 with a 1.5TB drive. and Debian installed will work fine. The 1.5TB limit is a software issue in the HP firmware, not hardware.

when i configure the system to read from one of my HP media Vault shared

Hi there,

I'm about to hand my MV5150 down to my brother and would like to revert the
install from Debian back to the original HP Firmware.

I'm not having a lot of luck!

1) I only have Apple/Linux boxes at home - I've tried with VMWare to run the
firmware recovery tool with the MV in recovery mode.

The tool finds the box and starts sending the firmware. Tells me "it can take
more than 10 minutes" but I have (literally) left it for two hours and when I
come back, the status indicator is still moving left-to-right and it still tells
me it's uploading the firmware. I.e. nothing appears to happen.

When I start the recovery, the CPU is maxed out and the network connection gets
very busy. When I come back, the CPU is idle and the network doing nothing.

2) I have tried using uphpmvault to send the HP firmware to the unit - it
starts, but, like the Windows one, just appears to hang.

3) I can happily reinstall Debian (using uphpmvault and netboot.img).

This makes me think the Debian install has done something to the non-volatile
portion of the unit's memory - or...???

Has anyone been able to revert after a Debian install?

Thanks!

Hi,

You may need to have a straight Windows box. The recovery tool is a little finicky with the network.

Hi,

I have hp mediavault mv5140 and cifs isn't giving me the best performance so i
tried to add NFS support by installing ipkg and installing nfs-utils package. It
all installed successfully.

It looks like i"m still missing something as i get the error "nfssvc: Function
not implemented" in /var/log/messages when i try to start nfsd.

Did anyone successfully added NFS support to MV5140?

According to the FAQ :

"On the Generation 2 Media Vaults, SSH is installed by default and enabled.  SSH is more secure than telnet and is also supported in putty.exe.  To use it, you must set up an admin name and password and then reboot the system you'll be able to use SSH to log into the MV2 with user 'root' and the password you set for the admin.  Please note, after setting or resetting the admin password, YOU MUST REBOOT the device using either the web interface (restart under the System tab), or from the power button before it will let you login with SSH."

So it would seem that the ssh should be enabled by default and you dont need
to do anything.. There is no telnet support out of the box..

Regards,
Bino.

Er oops, didn't catch that it was an MV2. Yeah, the MV2 uses SSH. Start PuTTY nd give it the root username, and the admin password that you set in the web UI.

Since I also use ipkg to intstall openssh, I next tried scp but it hangs:

Once I have these files safely off, I'm going to install Debian. My idea for
this NAS was to share files between four Ubuntu and one Mac desktop.

Thanks,

I sincerely appreciate all the help and wisdom that can be gleaned from the two
Yahoo! Media Vault forums, but sometimes it helps to be led by the hand when
you've hosed yourself like I did when I created a Firefly Smart Playlist that
caused all my playlists to disappear, and prevented Firefly Client from loading
the library.

I had been wanting to update mt-daapd anyway, so here was my opportunity. Xaprb
provides excellent instructions for doing just that.

Here's the link:

Hi,

Have any of you installed SubSonic on a MV2120? Don't even know if it is
possible but it looks like it.
http://subsonic.sourceforge.net/index.php

This is great on Windows and was hoping to have it on the Media Vault as it
holds all my media and i don't have to keep the computer on. Hoping to access
this from the web.

Regards,

James
