I have tried two of the desktop programs for editing HS databases but
both of them seem to fail. I really want to use HS on my desktop to
add and modify my lists, because typing on the little screen of my
phone is just not working for me.

Every time I transfer a file and try to read it the online program
tells me that there is no data in the file or that it is unreadable or
some such thing. It finds the PDB file but there's nothing in it.

Is there a step by step tutorial of how to sync HS on my HTC with a
Windows program? TIA

Hi Bill,

I understand you're asking about synching HS3 files between your Windows
Mobile HTC and your Windows PC. After which you need an application on your
Windows PC that understand HS3 PDB files format. Your main intention is to
allow easy typing into HS3 PDB file, using the big keyboard and screen of
your Windows PC.

I've been using an alternative to the above. Instead of synching the files,
I "remote control" my WM6.1 TreoPro from my Windows XP PC. A virtual screen
of my TreoPro is shown on my PC, at about double the size (twice the width
and twice the height). And I can type into HS3 using my PC keyboard, almost
as fast as any application on my PC.

I use a free remote control software called MyMobileR from
http://www.mymobiler.com .
MyMobiler v1.23 (06/15/2008) - FREEWARE
     * View your mobile screen on your desktop.
     * Control your mobile by using desktop keyboard and mouse.
     * Copy/Cut/Paste text between mobile and desktop.
     * Capture mobile screen.
     * Drag and drop files to your mobile.
     * Support ActiveSync / IP Connection
     * Support Mobile Explorer (File Browse)
DOWNLOAD
     * Download MyMobiler v1.23 (PC Install)
     * Download MyMobiler v1.23 (ZIP file)
     * Support Windows Mobile 2003
     * Support Windows Mobile 5.0 / 6.0

I believe there are other remote control software that are faster and more
functions, but not free.

regards,

I just remembered one that is specifically worth mentioning, Redfly by Celio
Corp at http://www.celiocorp.com/ . They have two main products ...
(1) Redfly Mobile companion, a 800x480 7" to 8" screen & keyboard device
that connects to your WM phone.
(2) Redfly Viewer, a software version of the above running on Windows
notebook/PC that do the same. See http://www.celiocorp.com/viewer . There is
a downloadable public beta (60-day trial version, I believe) on that page.
Caveat, I haven't tested it yet ... freeware MyMobileR meets my needs
without installing additional software on my PDAphone.

The advantage of Redfly hardware device/software over the freeware MyMobileR
is that it makes applications on the WM phone works at the higher resolution
of the Mobile companion or the notebook/PC.

A good review of Redfly Viewer here,
http://www.smartphonemag.com/cms/blog/9/review-benchmark-comparison-remote-contr\
oller-presentation-suite-redfly-mobile-viewer.

Hello, everyone.

It seems that this group's purpose has been confused with other groups
recently. Perfectly understandable given the nature of the tech industry
and people's tendency to go buy a new shiny toy for whatever reason,
forced or by choice.
Unfortunately, this group is not here for those people. This group is
for the people who ARE able to use the currently available versions of
HandyShopper for Palm OS and Pocket PC. Because of this shift in group
usage, I've had to be more clear about the group's purpose and
expectations. I've added the following to the group home page and
welcome message, and I'm posting it here so that those who don't go to
Yahoo will see it.*

Group DOs and DON'Ts*
DO Ask for help using HandyShopper.
Do NOT ask for a new HandyShopper for your new non-Palm/PPC device.
DO Share how you use HandyShopper.
Do NOT ask people to suggest an app for your new device that is like
HandyShopper.
DO report bugs and oddities you've discovered with HandyShopper.
Do NOT tell us how much you miss HandyShopper now that you switched to a
new device and could anyone please tell you what to use now.

I will no longer approve messages from people who have switched to a new
device and either want HandyShopper for it OR want suggestions for an
alternative that runs on their device. I'm sorry, but this group is not
here to helpe people "make the switch" to other applications. For those
people, I make the following recommendation: Join a forum or group that
supports your new device, and ask the members of that forum/group for
shopping list app suggestions. While you're at it, you might as well
leave this group so you're not bothered by messages about a program you
can no longer use. It's easy to do. Just read the footer of any message
from the group.

Am I being harsh? Maybe so. I'll be honest with you all... I'm tired of
all the "what's like Handyshopper but for
iPhone/Android/Pre/Blackberry/Whatever" posts. Sorry, but this group
isn't for those people. You have a new device that won't run
HandyShopper, you need to find support for your device elsewhere.
Hopefully you'll end up with an app that has at least some useful
functionality. I really do feel for you guys, though. Some day,
hopefully many years from now, most of us will be in the same position.
Maybe by then we'll be lucky enough to have a new HandyShopper to use,
but if not, we'll move on.

Until then, however, this group is here to serve those who USE
HandyShopper. If you can or should be able to use HandyShopper on your
device, please don't hesitate to post your question and we'll help as
soon as we can. I also encourage people to share how they use
HandyShopper, especially if it's something new you hadn't used it for
yet. You might be surprised at how many people hadn't thought of that
use already, and appreciate the suggestion. :)

Please note that I'm NOT trying to get people to stop buying new devices
and finding new shopping tools for those devices. By all means, support
the tech industry with your new purchases, and the developers by
buying/using their software. It's just that this group isn't here to
help that happen.

Thanks!

Greg,

I applaud your restated focus for this group, but please don't dismiss Palm
Pre users (unless they're cheap SOBs who aren't willing to shell out $30 for
Classic by MotionApps). I use HandyShopper 3.1 every day on my Pre under
Classic, which turns the Pre into a virtual Palm Centro. It runs 2-3 times
faster than it did on my Treo 700p, has full wireless HotSync to my PC, and
you can even zoom in.

Thanks.

David

No, I didn't mean to imply that. As I stated, if they can use
HandyShopper, then this group is for them, whether they're using it on a
mobile PC using an emulator/simulator, or a Pilot 1000 (though I'm not
entirely sure it will run HandyShopper ;-).
When I included Pre, it was for those wanting a native shopping app
rather than Palm OS app via Classic mode. :)

Thanks for the offers.

I could replace my digitizer again and extend the life of my TX for a few more
years, but I am getting tired of carrying around 2 Palm devices, and I am
committed to migrating to the Pre.

Shame that it is, it seems you will have to also migrate to a different
shopping list software...
A no-win situation when it comes to HS.

You are stuck in the classic dead ended legacy software vs. incompatible
new hardware no-win situation.

To move forward you have to leave something behind.
Too bad HS isn't porting their software forward.

HandyShopper...
Developed by ONE MAN...
For his personal use and enjoyment.
He shared it with the community...
FOR FREE.

The REAL shame is that there is CLEARLY a sizeable market for a USEFUL
shopping/list application, and yet no one seems to even be attempting to
come close to what HandyShopper has been able to do for several years.
No one can shame Chris for what he has done. The shamed are the
publishers with teams that can't accomplish the half of what he did.

In what way is HS dead-ended software? It's fully supported on new Windows

Too bad you never learned any manners before you decided to toss this out in a
public forum. Chris has ported it forward, to a platform that was going
somewhere. Yes, in an ideal world, he'd port it to the iPhone, and the MyTouch,
and etc., but frankly, since he doesn't charge for it, what incentive does he
have to do so? He doesn't use those platforms.

In what way is HS dead-ended software? It's fully supported on new Windows

db, not everyone is after money. I'm sure Chris could have cashed HS
ages ago if he wanted, thanks to him you and I can use the best
shopping app for free.

This may be true, but since Chris doesn't NEED the money, it's really
not an issue.
More importantly, look how entitled people feel when it's just freeware.
Imagine how bad it is when they have to pay for it. He knows how bad it
is, because he did put out an app and charged a small fee. He never
wanted, and still doesn't want the stress involved with an application
where not only do people feel entitled to updated and ports and such,
but he feels he owes them those things because they paid for it.
With freeware, he can share what he's done with no strings attached.
Unfortunately, some people still seem to think there are strings hanging
around for them to pull.

There aren't.

>The Smart phone apps market is much bigger than Palm PDA's apps market

Again, this may be true, but it's not about the money.
Though, you might want to do some more research into this. The last
story I read talked about how although the market was HUGE, people don't
want to pay for apps, and when they do, they don't want to pay more than
a buck. That puts a pretty big damper on developing new and complex apps
for those markets. Freeware apps are made by people who do it for the
enjoyment of making them, and USUALLY because they own and enjoy using
the device for which is was made.

Chris uses a PPC.

Even I am getting a bit frustrated.

What is it about that you feel your needs are more important than Chris'? He
did this for free, for himself, he shared it with us. If he chooses not to do
what you want, Leave it alone!

Sorry to be rude, but Greg has already asked that this forum be used to support
those who are users. I for one am very grateful to Chris. I will use HS as
long as possible and will mourn the loss if I cannot continue to do so. But
will do it with grace and not make everyone around me miserable.

I agree with PKnight. I have used HandyShopper since forever. Version
1.5 (I think or something like that) on my Palm III and about 6 more
Palms over the years. Handy shopper is a great example of what software
should be. It by far the best of any other software I used and I have
paid what seems like thousands of dollars to own. Many of those
commercial products have gone away. Many dropped support for Palm. My
second favorite program (commercial) is Nartara Bonsai and He has
announced he is dropping Palm support in the next release. Palm is
dropping us. Looks like it is a goner now.

Over the years, the first thing I put on a new Palm was HandyShopper
along with my thousand plus item grocery list database. HandyShopper is
indispensable. I use it for all kinds of things, but it's most important
use is for grocery shopping. In the kitchen and I see an item I need or
will need, out comes the PDA and in goes the item - only takes seconds.
In the store, I have help remembering what I need. A special recipe and
I have all the items needed when I get home. A perfect setup.

I have problems with Palm abandoning those of us who have supported them
for so long. I for one appreciate Chris' continued support even though
he has already seen the writing on the wall and moved to another platform.

Although I have problems moving to anything Micro$oft (I refuse), I will
"morn the loss of H.S. I would encourage Chris to move to a Linux based
system (M900) and port the application there. But, I really doubt that
will happen and I will loose my favorite program eventually.

All I can say is thanks, Chris, It has been a great ride and I greatly
appreciate what you have done.

Greetings Greg,

I am very thankful for everthing I have learned from all the years of
participating in this forum.  As I buy back-up TX's and Centro's (plus a Treo

Question, will this forum support desktop use of HS files?  That is where I
need help.

Thanks for everything,

Subject: [HS] Group Purpose...

I'm tired of
all the "what's like Handyshopper but for
iPhone/Android/ Pre/Blackberry/ Whatever" posts.

Thanks!
-Greg (Group Owner, 'case you didn't know)

Ron, I'm sure you could achieve more if you pitch HS and the already
existing DB routines on Maemo forums http://talk.maemo.org/ . As this
is end user group, there isn't that many potential developers who
could take HS to other platforms.

Maemo (the NXX0 series of Nokia devices) is blooming currently when
N900 is coming out so now would maybe the time to get some dev's
interested. HS made with QT would open so many possibilities, too bad
I'm not able to do it :)

Actually I'm going to open an account and throw idea of linux HS up in
the air :)

I only just noticed the Alarms feature in the docs, and it almost does what I'd
love to have, but I think not quite. If I can be clued in that the program
already does this, awesome, and otherwise, it's a feature suggestion.

I'd like to have items that are on the Need list but are kinda hidden anyway,
because I'm in the right store but I'm not going to buy them. Maybe the store's
out of stock, maybe it's the wrong variety, or I'm waiting for a sale, but I
want to make them invisible until tomorrow or next week because they're
cluttering my list and making it harder to make sure I get all the right stuff.

You could do this with moving items around between categories or something like
that, but then you have to go and move them back again. A more user-friendly
approach would be to have the context menu include a Snooze command, similar to
the Alarm command, that lets you tell HS to hide the item for a certain time
period.

Naturally, it would be nice if there were a command or button to switch between
Snoozed Items Hidden and Snoozed Items Visible. Also, for the item to have an
icon next to its name, like how items with Alarms have icons. Also, a command
to cancel all Snoozes.

Thanks.

There are at least two "shopping" programs for WebOS: tealshopper in the app
catalog and a Shopping List program in homebrew at precentral.   And quite
possibly more that have yet to be accepted into the still-beta app catalog.

The SDK is out, and it's VERY conducive to list-style development.  If Chris
were to give his OK, i'd wager there would be talent enough interested to make a
free webos rewrite.  If not, well, I wager the first one who can say "imports
handyshopper databases" will make a pretty penny.

It's in the context menu you get when you press right in one-handed

Hi Panu. I've followed Chris in migrating from PalmOS (Treo600) to WM
(XdaIIs, TyTNII, TreoPro), and am one of the early testers of HS3PPC. I find
that it is increasingly likely my next main PDAphone OS will be one of the
Linux variants (Android, Maemo, Moblin, etc). So I have an interest in HS
work-alike being developed on any one of those platforms.

As Greg said Chris has given his OK on HS work-alike and released his DB
routines.

I gather this talk of "alarms" is because its a feature in the Palm version?

I use the WM version, and have had to come up with my own workaround. In order
to see what I haven't bought in a long time I set my sort options to: Priority
first, A to Z, then by Date, A to Z, then by Description A to Z, and checked
items go to the bottom.

This give me my highest priority items at the top of the list, that I have not
bought recently.

Its not an alarm, but atleast I can see what I probably need the most. If
there's something with a priority of 1, that has a long interval, then I drop
its priority to 2.

James
