You can upload the actual HS2 database file. They are saved in your Palm
user backup folder on your hard drive, named the same as the database
itself, for example, cleaning.pdb.
When you go to upload a file, just find the .pdb you want to upload, and do it.

Exporting to memo pad is unnecessary.

Thanks!

As long as you didn't delete the original HandyShopper app, the original
database should still be there... I think...
What exactly happened to the data that classifies it as a "reaming?"

If all you want is your original databases to be called "Groceries" then
you should be able to rename it. Just tap the menu button, go to the DB
menu, and choose "Rename Database" then rename it just like any other thing
on the palm. :)

There are ways to transfer individual items to other databases, as well as
large amount of data, but it sounds like all you need/want is to rename the
database. :)

I have installed the new version and have imported the data from v1.7. The
database is now listed as *Data from v1.x* I have created a new database
called Groceries, how it is best to transfer the data ove without having to

Yes, as useful as the original HandyShopper was (is), HS2 is ten times as
useful. Being able to have multiple databases is a godsend. Of course, all
the other cool features are wonderful as well.

Read the README and FAQ that come in the download. Both are VERY
informative on new features, ways to use them, and how to make the most of
the software. Once you read those, come on back and share the wealth! :)

Hi all.

I am Pearlie from the palm-talk egroup and thanks Greg for inviting us to
join this new egroup.

I consider myself a *new* user of HS especially after reading the 15
messages already been exchanged. After reading about 12 messages had I only
realised that there is now already a new upgrade!! I was a bit lost at
first with to-do lists and all which I am quite sure I did not come across
with the HS I have in my palm LOL.

I am now in the process of downloading HS2. And I will see for myself the
new stuff in there. Any other pointers to this new upgrade??

Thanks for all the suggestions - the one on the shopping list is a good one.
I use to have it on my traditional carry organiser before I started using* a
Palm V. I am now using a IIIc.

I only use the HS for my shopping list and when I try out the HS2, I am
certain it can make life easier as most of you have pointed it out :^)

Thanks again.

It doesn't look like you can enter quantity as well as price in the
per-store prices. One workaround, however tedious, would be to pop up the
calculator, and do the math to even out the actual prices. Figure out the
price per 100ml, for example, and enter that in the per-store prices. The
stores I go to (except Costco) include a divided unit cost in fine print on
the price label on the shelf under the item. If I need to compare prices of
similar items that come in different quantities, I compare the per unit
price to find the best value. I guess if I needed to compare such prices
away from the store, to compare it with another store, I'd enter in the
amount per unit (often the unit is ounces) for each item. Then, when
determining the total costs, I'd be sure to enter the actual number of
those units for the quantity. The problem with this is when I am purchasing
several of the items with multiple unit. For example, if comparing prices
of spaghetti sauce by comparing the per-ounce price, and I decided to get
four cans of one of the brands, I'd have to multiply the number of ounces
in the can by four, and enter THAT into the quantity field, to make sure my
total was accurate.

Let me know if that's confusing, and I'll try to type up a clearer reply
using better example. hehe. ;-)

Thanks!

Ok, I did a little testing, and I think I figured out how you're working
this "budget" per kid and splitting the items purchased thing...

1) each child/family member is a store. You also use categories for gifting
occasions but that's unimportant for this test.

2) each family member is given a unique (not multiple store) "budget" item,
which is a positive about of money each person can spend, or have spent on
them (one of the two)

3) as purchases are made, the item is entered under the appropriate family
member (store) and assigned it's value/price as a negative

4) If the item is a multi-child gift, then the price is divided by the
number of recipients, and entered as a negative number, and ALSO assigned
to each recipient in the "stores..." dialog.

(this is where it gets tricky...)

5) to determine the remaining budget for each child, do NOT view "All
stores" as this will skew the total. Switch the store to the child you want
to check, then run the total command. The total will show the correct
amount left in the budget for THAT child.
To view the remaining budget of other children or family members, you must
exit the total screen, change stores, and run the total command again.

6) do NOT run the "checkout" command, as it will mark your purchased items
as not purchased, and your total will revert back to the full budget. Only
do this when you're ready to start a new gift giving season and want to
rest your totals to their full, unused budget amounts.

Did I get it right? :)

Hmm... I'm not sure what the problem with tax is.
the hard part is determining WHAT is taxed or not. :)
Once I get all the items properly marked for taxation, and enter the proper
tax percentage, my totals are almost 100% in agreement with the receipt.
Any variation is because of differing quantities, particularly in weighed
items like produce.

Can someone explain specifically what problems they are having with the tax
stuff?

Thanks!

Each week I add more foods to my list on HS2, and each week I add more aisles.  It is really crowded when we go, so is hard to stop and fiddle with the palm in the middle of the aisle too much.  I really love it and the NEED feature is great, especially sorted by aisle.  Some of the items that I did not get the aisle number for, I just guessed.  When I get to that aisle, at least I am close and don't have to trek back through the whole store finding that item like I used to. I am hoping to get prices in on everything, it would make me feel a little more confident at the checkout knowing that I had enough money with me.  At this time I don't use it for anything else, waiting for some great ideas from you guys.

Anyhoo, like Marie, I wait until I get home to input my prices into
HS2 using the receipt. However, I notice when I'm at Walmart, as I'm
putting the items in the cart, I'll input the price right then and
there. I guess I do it this way at Walmart because I can see the
price right away and if it's not rung up correctly, I can have them
do a price check.

Still trying to figure out the TAX part though--that part is
something I need to work on later.

Greg, first of all, thanks for starting this egroups list!! Second
of all, Good question--what lists do I use w/ HandyShopper to keep
track of...
I have a PACKING database, with TRAVEL, CAMPING, LEAVING, PICNIC,
SIERRA VISTA, KOREA, MOM as my stores. The Last 3 pertain to trips.
Sierra Vista is where we went to. Korea is where I'm going to, and
MOM is my MIL who I have to give things to before I leave. The
TRAVEL lists clothes and I put quantities in there. I got the
TRAVEL, LEAVING, PICNIC and CAMPING ideas from CEO's website
http://organizedhome.com

Another DB I have is HOMESCHOOL: the 'stores' in it are: INTERNET,
LIBRARY, to ORDER...things I need from the library, things I find on
the net and things I need to order.

I have a MISC. DB which has Orders (things I order from the Net or on
phone/mail); My budget is there too.

The Shopping DB has the stores I frequent: Bashas (local grocery
store), Walmart; Safeway, Staples, Petsmart, Costco. Categories
would be what I used for my coupons: Baking/bakery, beverage,
breakfast, canned goods, condiments, Dairy, frozen, health&beauty,
household, meat, paper/plastic, pets, produce, side dish, and
snacks.

Hope this helps!!

For those unfamiliar with the acronym(s), including me and probably most

I started doing that as well. It's a rare shopping trip that I can walk
leisurely around writing down aisles and prices. hehe.

I usually just try to memorize things temporarily as I'm shopping. I'll
look at my list, and try to remember the things I need next. Then, as I get
them, I go through the list and check them off. I haven't gotten into
entering aisles just yet. I probably should. hehe.

Thanks!

Best things in life are free. I have to send a nice postcard to Christopher Antos. HS has the To do list button. I need help on the price section of HS. Lets say there is store a and b. At store a, 750ml of ketchup is $1.99 and at store b it is 600ml for $1.75. The problem is I can only put the price not the quantity. And in my example, if I only see the price, I will pick the ketchup at store b but it is cheaper at store a. I know I can use Best buy function but when you have to do it for a lot of items, it is not practical. Anyone has a solution. For now I have a note for items that have different price and quantity in different store.

Thank you

One of the things I find interesting is how in-depth (or not, depending on
your tastes) you can make HS. Bearing in mind that hte primary use I have
for HS is my grocery list, here are a few tips that have made my life
easier:

1. For the price column, if it is somethign that we only use one brand of
(for example, ketchup. DH won't eat anything but Heinz) then I put the brand
name and the normal price. If it is something that price doesn't really
matter on, such as mac and cheese, then I put just the "noun" and the lowest
price. It may be more rudimentary than most dedicated price book software,
but it works for me.

2. Rather than stand in the grocery store scribbling furiously, I wait until
I get home and then copy information off of my receipt. The only
disadvantage to this is that I can't always remember aisle numbers. At least
my commissary has a "shopping list" that tells you what aisle things are on,
so I can usually figure it out from home.

3. For aisle number, I got a little discouraged by the aisles that run along
the front and back of the store, as they don't really HAVE an aisle
number...until (DUH!) I made the meat counter an aisle of its own. Its
number is higher than the rest, so that I go to it last, right before
checking out.

4. I'm not too sure how I feel about the sort order. I sort by aisle, but
the aisles are long and I often wind up going up and down up and down since
the items list alphabetically. I suppose I could just make a mental
adjustment and let, for example 1B become 2, etc. But since part of my point
is to make HS so easy to use that even DH can do the shopping, I don't want
to get too customizy on him...grin

5. I use Mastercook for my meal planning, and I generate a shopping list in
there, then manually input it into HS. It would be lovely if I could just
export/import....but, by the same token, Mastercook will list the same
ingredient 6 or 7 times if it appears in multiple rceipes, and I still have
to add it together for a total....so....still crunching this one over in my
head/

Unlike a lot of people I don't use Handyshopper for much more than
actual shopping-type lists (For other lists, I use Brainforest).
However, this is what I do use HS for: Gift List. Wish List.
Groceries. Movies I want to see (Stores are New Release and VIDEO).
Since I use Action Names, I don't use HS for To-Dos, but for what I
DO use it for, it works WONDERFULLY

I thought I start a simple thread here as well...

What lists do you use your HandyShopper to keep track of?

I have the following lists on my PalmV in HandyShopper2:

Cleaning - this is the one I hope to share. It's a list of all the things
to do, and supplies needed to clean your house, divided up by rooms
(stores) and time periods (categories) such as "Weekly" and "As Needed". I
haven't used it yet, but I don't claim to keep a tidy house, either. hehe. ;-)

Greg's Wish List - I had been trying to keep a "gift ideas" list, but
turned out to only be keeping lists of things *I* wanted. hehe. So, I
turned it into a wish list. When I need to share my list with family or
friends during gift giving occasions, I simply export the entire list to
Memo Pad, then copy and paste the memo into an e-mail, or turn it into HTML
and post it online. I might not be a good housekeeper, but I'm an
impeccable wish list keeper. hehe

Groceries - this is my actual shopping list. Ive only recently begun
entering prices for things, and I'm wishing I had done it from the start.
Of course, I have multiple stores, and I topped out the categories. Does
anyone have an efficient use of the categories for a shopping list? I find
that sometimes I'm not sure what category to put things in. Anyway, it's SO
nice not to be writing the shopping list on paper every week... not to
mention trying to scratch things off with a pen while shopping with a kid
in the cart. ;-)

Movies - I'm still building this one... It's a (soon to be) complete
catalog of all the movies we have on our VHS tape collection. Most of our
tapes are home-recorded, with two or three movies on each one. I found that
there weren't enough aisles, categories, or stores for all my tapes, and
using the amount field for the number of the tape seemed silly. I had
numbered all of our tapes, so I decided to use the quantity field for the
tape number, stores as a "genre" organizer, since most movies can be more
than one genre (comedy AND romance), and category as a rating system (bad,
ok, good, excellent). As soon as I finish cataloging all our movies, it
will make deciding what to watch (and where to find it) much easier, not to
mention knowing what movies we already have so we don't record it again. hehe

Quarters - State quarters list. This is the one that someone shared on
PalmGear (sorry, forgot his name). I modified it, though, to separate the
mints into the stores, so that I don't have two of each in my list. My son
doesn't care what mint it's from. He just wants all fifty, to put into his
map. ;-)

ToDo - this is my replacement for the built-in ToDo app. I remapped my ToDo
button to HandyShopper. Now, when I need a simple ToDo, I switch to this
list. My only desire would be to somehow have repeating items, that
automatically uncheck (switch to "need") on a scheduled basis. That would
make the Cleaning list even more useful.

Transformers - I collect these toys, and I use this list to keep track of
the ones I want, and check them off when I get them. Conceivably, I could
use it to keep track of the value of my collection. As soon as the Desktop
is developed for HS2 (crossing my fingers), I'll probably do that.

Trip List - after a bad experience with forgetting to bring something on a
trip (forgot watersocks, and literally burnt our feet on hot sand) my wife
created this list on the way home from that trip. It's a list of everything
we could possibly need to bring on any trip. Stores are family members, and
categories are types of things (toiletries, beach, bedding, food, etc.)

Wow, that's a long e-mail. :)
I hope it sparked an interest in a new use for some people.
I look forward to reading how other people are currently using their lists.

Thanks!

That's a great idea! I was thinking, wouldn't it be less confusing to set
the budget as a positive number, then all the purchases as negatives, but I
realized it would be harder to remember to enter the purchases as negatives
all the time.

Hmm... but, once you buy something from one store, it's marked off of the
other store automatically. It's not purchased twice. Are you entering the
item under each kid separately, or putting in a quantity of 2? I'd think
that merely having the item under two stores, but at half the cost, would
make the totals off by half the cost. Otherwise, for a "normal" shopping
list, all your totals would be off by a factor of how many items were under
more than one store.
Or, do I misunderstand how you're doing it?
Maybe, I'm misunderstanding how HandyShopper works. :\

Thanks!

Ok - I'll throw out an idea...

My husband and I set this list up for gifts in a Handyshopper database. It
allows to set budgets for individuals for various occasions. Here goes...

We set up basic categories like Birthday, Christmas, Anniversary, Other,
etc... Each individual in our family gets input in the 'stores' field. For a
budget, we put in a single '*budget*' entry for each person and assigned it
to the proper category with a dollar amount in the price field. As we make
up the gift list we enter the item name, and the price gets entered as a
negative number. Once we purchase the item, we check it off the list. To see
how much we have left in the budget, go to the checkout menu and see if the
total is positive or negative. This is great for keeping track of what we
spent and remembering what all we have already purchased for other people.

Another tip: if you are splitting a gift between 2 of your kids, divide the
total by 2 and enter that in the price field. Assign the item to both people
and then the budget totals will be reflected correctly :)

I knew HandyShopper was a popular program, but I didn't expect such a quick
jump in subscribership to this group. I must say I'm a little impressed. :)

Anyway, I'm glad you all have joined, and I hope this group can become a
valuable resource to HandyShopper users. Feel free to post your questions
about the application(s), share ideas for uses, and even share HS and HS2
databases that other users might find useful. I might just start you all
off with a database passed to me by a friend at my Palm Users Group
(Seattle), once I get permission from her to share it. :)

I won't claim to be "the expert" on HandyShopper. In fact, I've only used
HandyShopper 2, because I need the multiple database feature. In that vein,
I know quite a bit how it works and how to use it, but even so, I don't
know it all. I eagerly await the final version of HS2 (which I'll be sure
to make an announcement about as soon as it's put up on PalmGear), as well
as the development of the Desktop client (hopefully).

Hopefully, someone here will be versed in the use of HS 1.7 and can help
users of that version (not to mention sharing databases).

So... strike up a convo, ask a question, share your expertise, and have
some fun!
And, thanks for joining!
-Greg

PS. Chris Antos is very busy, and will probably NOT be joining the group.
This list is partially an effort to reduce the amount of e-mail he receives
about HandyShopper.
