Everyone either seeking for alternatives, or wishing to share found
alternatives should go to this group database:
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/handyshopper/database?method=reportRows&tbl=3\

There you will find a list of alternatives to check out for your device.
If you go to that database and your favorite alternative is not listed,
please list it there.

Please do not continue discussion of these alternatives on the mailing
list. The database was created to avoid such off-topic threads.

Greg,

just checked and noticed that an app recently favourably mentioned on this
list was not listed, so I've addedd it, though I know nothing about it,
perhaps someone who used it can upload more useful comment than mine.

Thanks! That's exactly the reason for the database.

I have not used Handyshopper for several years and I have decided to start using
it again mainly for grocery shopping. I'm using version 2.9b. Is it worth while
upgrading to the newer version? 2.9b seems to be working well and I don't think
I will need more features for my simple grocery shopping.

Also, I use Handyeditor version 1.41 to modify lists. Would the newer Handy
Shopper version conflict with Handyeditor.

One last question, I see there is a version 1.44 of Handyeditor. Is this worth
upgrading too.
Thanks

If what you have is working, don't change anything.
The new version of HandyShopper will definitely make your lists NOT
compatible with HandyEditor.
I don't know what version of HS HandyEditor supports, but it's probably
not the latest.
Since you're happy with the features and function of the versions you're
using, I say stick with them both.

Will this work on a Nook Tablet? I miss my Handyshopper and so far I have found
nothing that compares to my beloved HS. Must keep aline (and carry around) my
Palm just for HS alone. :(

I tried AndyShopper, but it didn't compete with ToMarket, which is as close
to HandyShopper as I have been able to come on Android.

Subject: "No databases found" -- looks like my PDB file got corrupted!

Hi all,
Long time HandyShopper user in need of some help!

Device: Dell Axim X3i (WM2003, ARM)
HandyShopper version: v3.2 build 6516
database file: "HS2_Pam.pdb", file size 68kb (<-"HS2" because the db was created
years ago, before upgrade to latest version).

Problem: this grocery list database had been in use for years without issue, but
on March 23rd when I went to open HS, HS reported "no databases found". The file
exists in the usual location on the device, but I am unable to open it on my PDA
or with hs3convert.exe on my Windows PC.

Is it at all possible to repair the file, or at least access and retrieve any of
the data within it?

I've uploaded the file(zipped) in the hopes that someone out there might be kind
enough to take a look and have more success than me:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/re7gq6

Even if the database & contents are lost, I'm wondering why it might suddenly
become "not found"/un-openable. I seem to have had a bad day with devices losing
settings, this was the 3rd thing today to go mysteriously wrong!

Thanks for looking!
DanB

Hi Dan,

The database header in that file is definitely corrupt. It has been
overwritten by some text from another file. It's a good sized list,
with many hundreds of items, so I can see why you would be unhappy to
lose it.

The first thing is to search for a backup file on your desktop, or
wherever you sync your device? Or perhaps on the device itself, if you
run a backup utility. Failing that, it MIGHT be possible to rebuild the
header to the point that your data becomes usable again. It would
involve a fair amount of head-scratching to do it, and it wouldn't be a
trivial task, but it might be do-able. As a fellow Canadian (making an
assumption here based on your store list) I will commit to at least
giving it an attempt, if you need me to. But first make sure that you
don't have a backup somewhere.

Thanks Robert for the reply, for taking a look, for the insight & offer to
assist!

I do have a few backups of the .pdb, but the most recent I see is a year old
(yeah, yeah.. lesson *is* learnt!.. backups should be done habitually and
frequently). File size is 75% of the corrupt one, and probably most of that is
item Notes containing pricing history. I'd guess I have around 90% of the items
I had in the corrupt file in the backup, so fortunately it's not the end of the
world.

I also discovered that if I rename the corrupt .pdb to .xls, I can open it and
view much of my data, although much of it is mixed in with unreadable
gobbledygook.

It would take a while to fix re-enter the data, and I don't mind doing it
(rather me waste time on this than you, eh?). I'm intrigued though by what you
said about it possibly being possible to rebuild the header data - could you
share what you think you'd have to do/what tools you'd use to try and fix it?
I'm always up for a challenge!

Thanks again
DanB

I cannot figure out whether there are any programs that will still let me read
the file on my desktop and/or export it to a csv or xls or another format.

If there is someone who can still do that, can I send you a file to convert?

Or will someone walk me through finding a program that will work?

Thanks,

I'm pretty sure the hs2convert.exe that comes with the latest HS2
download will work. It's a command line tool, so just open up a command
prompt and run the exe, and it will spit out the instructions, including
some examples. Put your database in the same folder to make things easier.

Are there instructions somewhere to import data from other shopping programs?
I had dl'd AndShoBBer but never used it b/c I couldn't figure out how to
import my data.  I am using ToMarket now and fairly satisfied with it but would
be glad to do some beta testing on AndShoBBer if I can get my data imported.
Not willing to type it again.  I have imported my data from HandyShopper to
ToMarket. It's not terribly difficult I just don't see an option for it in
AndShoBBer.

Hi AndersBroe,

I see the "What's New" page for
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=dk.andbb.andshobber.database
shows
...

*What's in this version: Version 0.2.0 has been cleaned up even more*

The "Overview" page still shows Version 0.1.5. I then downloaded and
installed the app on my Samsung Galaxy S II. But Setting > Applications >
Manage Applications > AndshoBBer still shows version 0.1.5.

Ah well, I was looking forward to test the new version further.

Anders,

My experience has been the same as Greg, Carla and sabre23t. I went to the
market and found that the description talked about version 0.2 but when I
downloaded the "latest" version it is still version 0.1.5 and I'm still unable
to import my HandyShopper data.
Like Carla, I'm currently trying another app (rShopping List, in my case) but am
not entirely happy with it.
I'll gladly give AndShobber a hard workout if I can import my existing data.

The latest version appeared for my in the market, so I downloaded it.
It's MUCH better than the previous version, like Anders said. Is it
perfect? Nah, but it's heaps better than before, and I like the progress
I see.
I re-imported a couple test lists, and it worked much better than
before. I haven't dug deep enough to find any problems yet, but on the
surface it looks pretty good.
I'll re-export some of my lists again to do a test move to AndShoBBer
and see how it goes.
Thanks for keeping at it, Anders!

one day, I might stop using my Palm and HS...

dumb question, with bar codes, can one scan (empty) tins to make 'need to
buy' ?

Yeah, I still use mine. We shall see if AndShoBBer is a worthy
replacement. I don't carry both devices, though. When I need my
HandyShopper on me, I use my Wrist PDA. :)

Yes. Such a feature only requires a software developer to include it.
Many apps use bar code scanning already, and phones that don't come with
a scanner can get free ones that are popularly used by other developers
as a helper app.

Greg - It may be device-dependent but into which folder did you place your XML
file to import?

I believe you can put them anywhere on the card, actually. To make them
easy for me to find, though, I created a folder on my card called "HS"
and put them there.

Hi Carla,
So I do not have short term plans for advanced import; but on my list of tasks
is a simple list import.

However you may have luck importing via HS2Edit and excel
http://handheld.softpedia.com/get/Desktop-and-Shell/Windows/HS2Edit-19768.shtml
If you need a HS2Convert, I have one in my batch zip file; check out here:

les
(which is also the best current instruction on PDB->XML->AndShoBBer conversion)

I had dl'd AndShoBBer but never used it b/c I couldn't figure out how to
import my data.  I am using ToMarket now and fairly satisfied with it but would
be glad to do some beta testing on AndShoBBer if I can get my data imported.
Not willing to type it again.  I have imported my data from HandyShopper to
ToMarket. It's not terribly difficult I just don't see an option for it in
AndShoBBer.

Any directory will do, but please make sure the format is a true hs2convert
export;

My apologies to the list if I am off topic but I loved HS on my Palm so my heart
is in the right place.

I am adding HS import capability to my iPhone app ezShopList and only have
example databases for HS2 circa 2008 (when my Palm died). If anyone would like
to share some example HS2 or HS3 databases to allow me to test the import please
send the pdb files to support@....

Thanks
