A few days ago Miguel de Guzman died in Madrid.

Miguel de Guzman was born in Cartagena in 1936. He studied Philosophy in
Germany (1961), Mathematics in Madrid (1965), and got his PhD from Chicago
University (1968), his supervisor was Alberto Calderon.
He has been professor in USA ( at Chicago U., Washington U., and
Princeton U.), Sweden and Brasil. He was "catedratico" (full professor)
of Mathematical Analysis at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and
a member of the Spanish Academy of Sciences, since 1982.
He was president of the Internacional Committee for Mathematical Education
(ICME) from 1991 to 1998. He is the author of many papers and books, including
technical books and books for the laypeople about mathematics (translated
to English, Chinese, Finish, French and Portugues).
Miguel de Guzman is a reference for many spanish mathematicians. He has
influenced generations of researchers and educators. In the last years
he dedicated lots of time and effort to mathematics education, to build
bridges from the universities and the Academy to high, middle and
elementary schools.
In June 1996, the 5th International Conference on Harmonic Analysis and
PDEs was a celebration of Miguel de Guzman's 60th birthday.
He will be missed dearly, but his example, testimonies, uncountable books
and works will remain with us.
