Westley,
I regret that I will not be able to attend the HCES board meeting on
September 6 since I am still here in Manila.
Since my retirement from the City and County of Honolulu last July 1,
2005, I took advantage of my free time by traveling to California,
Nevada, and now here in the Philippines. I might also travel to the
east coast sometime in October.
I intend to fly back to Honolulu sometime on the last week of September
... and will try my very best to attend the next meeting in October and
also attend the other tasks I needed to do for the HCES Website and the
Mailing List.
It is indeed nice to be retired and I am just taking advantage of this
new status of mine now. For whatever shortcomings I have with the HCES,
kindly accept my apology.
By the way, we do have a newly set-up mailing list for HCES now. I
noticed that you just sent your email to the old address. Next time, I
suggest that you send all your postings to:
hawaiices@yahoogroups.com
Regards and a warm aloha to you and everyone else in our mailing list.

Maelyn,
I noticed that there has been no traffic going on in our new HCES
Mailing List for sometime now. Anyway, I just wanted to touch base
with you and also say hello to you and all the others in our Mailing
List. I have been wondering why things have been so quiet for the
past weeks.
I have been in the Philippines for the past week and will stay
towards the last week of September ... which means that I will not
be able to attend the scheduled meeting this September. However, if
there is anything that you might need from my side, just email me
anytime. I do manage to have access to the Internet anyway.
I've been traveling around since I retired from the City and County
of Honolulu last July 1, 2005. Last July I was in California and
Nevada and this August out here in the Philippines. In October I
also plan to visit the west coast. I guess it will only be in
November and December that I will be staying put in Honolulu.

Aloha,
Recently, I encountered some technical problems with the HCES mailing
list (hces@yahoogroups.com) and have asked YAHOOGROUPS.COM for
assistance ... however, up to this time I have not heard from them as
yet. I could only post and receive messages but not not perform other
tasks normally performed by a List Moderator. For example, I am unable
to add new members to our mailing list or delete members who no longer
want to receive HCES postings and announcements.
Since I know that there will be some changes to be made in our list of
subscribers, I decided to create a new HCES Mailing List. And just
before going to bed last night, I came up with one which is now ready
for our use. However, if YAHOOGROUPS.COM will soon be able to fix the
technical problem I reported to them, we could still go back to our old
mailing list ... if not, we can just continue using this new one I
created for HCES.
It is still going to be called the HCES Mailing List. The only change
is its email address. Your postings will now have to be sent to the
following email address:
HAWAIICES@yahoogroups.com
As of today, there are only 10 initial subscribers to this new HCES
Mailing List. Per policy of YAHOOGROUPS.COM, I can only enter 10 new
subscribers daily. The following are the first batch of subscribers:
1) kniiya@... (Keith Niiya)
2) danhirota@... (Dan Hirota)
3) MTUYEHARA@... (Maelyn Uyehara)
4) wyamamoto1@... (Warren Yamamoto)
5) bmorrissey@... (Bob Morrissey)
6) Gary.Yamamoto@... (Gary Yamamoto)

8) Westley.Chun@... (Westley Chun)
9) sdannaway-ssda@... (Sam Dannaway)
10) junylaputt@... (Juny La Putt, List Administrator)
In the next few days, more names will be added to the above list. If
you are interested to join this new HCES Mailing List, kindly
communicate with Maelyn Uyehara (MTUYEHARA@...) so your name
and email address can be included. If your name and email address are
already listed above, it won't be necessary to communicate with Maelyn
anymore and you may now start posting messages to the new HCES Mailing
List.

Maelyn,
I sent you earlier today the email addresses of the 37 subscribers of
the HCES Mailing List. I hope you got it.
As far as I know there is nothing wrong with the HCES Mailing List
which is hosted by YAHOOGROUPS.COM. The only possible reason why some
individuals did not get any announcements or postings is that mail sent
to their email addresses are "bounced back." It could be that their
INBOX are filled up that email could nolonger be received ... or their
email addresses are nolonger current. When YAHOOGROUPS.COM detects
"bouncing mail," it automatically cancels the email address of the
individual listed in the mailing list.
I did receive the minutes for the last meeting which you posted. If I
got it, I do not see a reason why the other listed subscribers didn't
get theirs.

Juny

*** AMERICA OBSERVES THE MEMORIAL DAY HOLIDAY
In the United States, Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday of the
month of May. It is said to be the saddest of all days for it is observed
in memory of the hundreds of thousands of American men and women who died
in defense of this great country. It is on this day that flowers are cast
on the oceans to honor those who died at sea. In a similar gesture,
American flags are placed on the graves of those who are buried in
cemeteries in America and in foreign lands.
The President usually places a wreath in Arlington National Cemetery in
Virginia at the Tomb of the Unknowns. This is similarly done by other
government and military officials in numerous other cemeteries
throughout the country and in other countries were Americans are buried.
All across America there are parades, speeches, and ceremonies to remember
and pay tribute to military personnel who have given up their lives for
their country. Flags fly at half-mast on government buildings and on US
navy and commercial ships throughout the world as a fitting tribute to the
dead.
The idea for the memorial came nearly two decades ago, after an encounter
between Rep. Marcy Kaptur, D-Ohio, and World War II veteran Roger Durbin.
In front of a crowd at a political event, Durbin asked Kaptur why there
was no World War II memorial. In 1987, she introduced a bill and they
worked together to get the legislation passed so the memorial could be
built.
Congress authorized construction of the memorial in 1993, but critics
complained its large-scale design would spoil the vistas long enjoyed by
visitors to the Mall. After a two-year battle, the courts rejected the
challenge from memorial opponents. Ground was broken in late 2001. The
memorial was opened to the public in April. Organizers did not want to
wait until the formal Memorial Day weekend dedication ceremony because the
delay would limit the number of veterans who could see it.
The oval-shaped bronze and granite memorial sits on 7.5 acres of land. It
has 56 pillars forming a semi-circle around a reflecting pool. Wreaths
adorned the granite pillars, which were joined by a bronze rope. At one
end is a wall of sculpted gold stars honoring the 400,000 Americans who
died in the war. The $174 million memorial celebrates not only the service
of the men and women in uniform but the millions more who helped win the
war at home.
At Gettysburg Memorial Park, in Pennsylvania, there is a service of
remembrance to mark a major battle that occurred there during the Civil
War. There are many who travel from all parts of the country to visit
cemeteries and the recently erected Vietnam War Memorial in Washington,
D.C., which contains the names of more than 58,000 Americans who died
during the Vietnam War.
At the Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor where more than a thousand US Navy
personnel have been entombed with the USS Arizona, a memorial service is
held every year. Flower leis are cast into the sea where the ship
lies permanently a few fathoms just beneath the surface.
The memorial service is usually capped off with a twenty-one gun salute,
the firing of three volleys, and a military bugler playing "taps." Many
veterans, families of veterans and their friends attend this solemn
ceremony. You will always find most of them standing by and watching ...
and usually with a tear in their eyes.
A similar memorial service is likewise held at the Punchbowl National
Memorial Cemetery in Honolulu where thousands of American men and women
are buried. These are the people who served in the armed forces of the
United States and who died in defense of America and in its quest for
freedom and democracy. It includes those who died during the last world
War, the Korean and Vietnam Wars, and in the recent conflicts in other
places around the world.
This Sunday afternoon local Boy Scouts here in Honolulu take it upon
themselves to place small American flags on each gravesite. It is a
sight to behold seeing all the tiny flags waving as the wind goes through
the gentle slopes of the cemetery grounds. There are also relatives who
will visit the cemetery to pray at gravesites and decorate the graves of
their departed love ones. Many of the graves will be decorated with an
assortment of beautiful Hawaiian flowers and leis. A gesture which
resembles the Greek and Roman tradition of honoring the dead with flowers
or branches on certain days.
No one is sure exactly how Memorial Day started. It was believed, however,
that the Southerners were the first ones to observe Memorial Day. The
story goes that just about two years after the civil war, there were women
in Columbus, Mississippi who decorated the graves of both Confederate and
Union soldiers with magnolia blossoms. Later, violets and roses were also
used. This was taken as a fine and welcome gesture in those heartsore days
that the custom spread and ultimately became an American tradition.
In 1873, New York became the first state to make it a legal holiday. The
United States Congress made it an official holiday for federal government
employees in 1887. At first it was called Decoration Day, but the name
Memorial Day gradually became accepted. In the South, many states also
observe Confederate Memorial Day to honor the soldiers who fought in the
Confederate Army during the Civil War.
During a Memorial Day proclamation in 2003, Pres. George Bush said, "Each
Memorial Day, we pray for peace throughout the world, remembering what was
gained and what was lost during times of war. From the bravery of the men
at Valley Forge, to the daring of Normandy, the courage of Iwo Jima and
the steady resolve in Afghanistan and Iraq, our men and women in uniform
have won for us every hour that we live in freedom."
Whatever the flower, wherever the grave, this placing of flowers upon
graves of American men and women who gave up their lives in defense of
America has always seemed the natural thing to do on Memorial Day.

IT'S JOKE TIME: "FARMER JOHN AND HIS WATERMELONS"
There was a farmer named John who grew watermelons. He was doing pretty
well but he was disturbed by some local kids who would sneak into his
watermelon patch at night and eat all his watermelons.
After some careful thought, John came up with a clever idea that he
thought would scare the kids away for sure. So he made up a sign and
posted it in the field. The next day, the kids show up and they see a
sign saying: "Warning! One of the watermelons in this field has been
injected with cyanide."
So the kids run off and make up their own sign and post it next to the
farmer's sign. Farmer John showed up the next week and looks over his
watermelon plantation. He was very pleased that no watermelons were
missing, but reads the sign next to his: "Now there are two!"

Sorry for the flurry of e-mails but we will need to select a venue quickly. Once we do you will see the volume of e-mails dramatically drop off. As I mentioned earlier, Japanese Cultural Center and Hale Koa are not available on Saturday. That leaves the following alternative venues besides Koolau:
(1) Filipino Community Center
(2) Ala Wai Clubhouse
(3) Coast Guard Clubhouse
(4) Camp Smith Clubhouse
(5) Oahu Country Club
Unless anyone objects, I am striking off Ala Wai, Coast Guard, and Camp Smith clubhouses because they do not meet our criteria for the banquet.
I contacted the Filipino Community Center and they are available. Juny: Can you provide input on the suitability of this venue and if they meet our budgetary constraints?
I also contacted the Oahu Country Club. The dining room is available and can hold up to 275. The room, however, is L-shaped but workable. Cost per person is $33.69 (includes service charge and tax). We need to find a sponsor but I don't think that will be a problem. They have a piano but we need to bring our own extension cords. Incidental costs (screen, mic, stage, etc.) total $55 so we may be able to keep our cost below $35 per person.
Looks like we now have two, maybe three, viable options to choose from. Your comments are appreciated.

I researched some of the locations that Juny recommended when I chaired or worked on the Banquet committee four out of the last five years. Comments are adjacent to his list. If you want to consider the others, I would suggest adding members to your committee to research those locations because it is a lot of work and time to research all of the places mentioned.

Westley,
How about considering the following venues:
1) Japanese Cultural Center
2) Filipino Community Center (Waipahu)
3) On the Deck of the U.S.S. Missouri -- TOO EXPENSIVE, FUNCTIONS THERE ARE TYPICALLY FUNDRAISERS
4) Ala Wai Clubhouse (City & County of Honolulu)
5) Coast Guard Clubhouse (Sand Island)
6) Camp Smith Clubhouse (Aiea)
7) Paradise Park (Manoa) -- MAY NOT MEET BANQUET ROOM CRITERIA FOR ENG WK BQT
8) Oahu Country Club (Pali Highway)
9) The Willows (Near U.H.M.) -- INSUFFICIENT CAPACITY
10) Kahala Mandarin (Kahala) -- TOO EXPENSIVE
11) Hale Koa Hotel (Waikiki) -- ADEQUATE BUT ALREADY HAVE ENG WK LUNCHEON THERE
There are plenty around town and all that needs to be done is check these venues out.

Juny – I thought maybe you already
had a guesstimate on the cost for the caterer that we could use to do a quick
comparison.
Westley – would you like me to
contact FCC tomorrow to get a quote from one or two of the caterers listed? If
so, do you have any preferences?

Maelyn,
Listed in the sheet that was faxed to
Westley are 5 different caterers.
The cost depends on the type and quantity
of food we want the caterer to provide us and the number of people to be
served. I suggest that you get in touch with some of the caterers listed and
select the type of menu we want. You can ask them to provide you their
suggested menu. Only then will you be able to determine the cost per head.
If you want recommendations or
suggestions, I can inquire from FCC as to which caterer would be the most
suitable and well liked. If you have a caterer(s) in mind, let me know who you
selected from the list provided by FCC and I can contact them myself.

I vote for Koolau or Oahu CC at this
point. Appears to be less hastle, i.e one price gets all the required
services as a package. FCC may have parking problems - Note
requirements for SD Police.

Westley,
Okay, now you have probably at least
three available options. I guess all that you need to work out now is selecting
the best, the most suitable, and the most affordable.
Hopefully, everyone now should realize
that problems of this kind are actually easy to solve if we all put our heads
and efforts together.

I contacted the FilipinoCommunity Center
and they are available. Juny: Can you provide input on the suitability of
this venue and if they meet our budgetary constraints?
I also contacted the Oahu Country
Club. The dining room is available and can hold up to 275. The
room, however, is L-shaped but workable. Cost per person is $33.69
(includes service charge and tax). We need to find a sponsor but I don't
think that will be a problem. They have a piano but we need to bring our
own extension cords. Incidental costs (screen, mic, stage, etc.)
total $55 so we may be able to keep our cost below $35 per person.
Looks like we now have two, maybe three,
viable options to choose from. Your comments are appreciated.

Maelyn and Westley,
I just contacted three of the 5 caterers (Creations in Catering, Crown Court
Restaurant, and Marian's Catering) listed by FCC. They will fax and mail to me
their menu selection.
I will try to get hold of Golden Coin Restaurant and Tanioka's Seafood &
Catering for their menu as well.
Let me know what you want me to do with it by the time I get the menu.
Juny
Listed in the sheet that was faxed to Westley are 5 different caterers.
The cost depends on the type and quantity of food we want the caterer to provide us and the number of people to be served. I suggest that you get in touch with some of the caterers listed and select the type of menu we want. You can ask them to provide you their suggested menu. Only then will you be able to determine the cost per head.
If you want recommendations or suggestions, I can inquire from FCC as to which caterer would be the most suitable and well liked. If you have a caterer(s) in mind, let me know who you selected from the list provided by FCC and I can contact them myself.
