OK, you changed the specs!

The following would work, except if the apostrophe is the very first
character between [ and ]:

( \[[a-z]{1,}\'*\])

If there are strings matching the above mentioned exception - eg.
['aekwizi] – you could catch them with a second pass:

( \[\'[a-z]{1,}\])

I'm sure smarted people could combine both into a single pass.

Cheers, Dominique

Thank you, Dominique!

However, I was not clear enough. My regex seems to work too, but what happens is
(with your and my regex) that the regex would find the whole string below:

  [upp]-fånga acquisition [aekwizi']

I wonder if there is a regex that would find only

[aekwizi']

regardless of where the apostrophy is found in the string.

My first thought was, you probably follow groups that have more educated readers
:-).

More seriously: I assume that more sophisticated readers follow their Yahoo
groups using addresses that are different from the ones used for emails to and
from individual correspondents.

Either that, or we never take time off.

But you might be right.

Hi Adrian and Jenny

Thanks for your feedback.

Yes, ALDI are pretty good. In view of their prices, it never ceases to
amaze me how the ALDI brothers manage to be the richest people in
Germany =-O

If it's business use, I would shy away from any "home" version.

For XP, I have "Professional". For Windows 7, I will most likely get
Ultimate unless a myriad of applications start appearing for Linux ;)

As regards ALDI, they do come up with some very good deals from time
to time, at least on the European mainland. I am not sure about the UK though.

Hello Herbert,

Aldi and Lidl computers are usually very good. I had a laptop from the Lidl once, and this computer I use for my e-mail came from the Trekpleister chain. (has two draws for easy cd-copying but not much memory)

Check the MS site for the different Windows versions, and the Windows Secrets site for restrictions.
http://windowssecrets.com/library/?u=p7q5qk67lw01&r=28175-19932

IIRC, you need more than the basic edition to emulate XP and run all your old programs, and there may be networking implications too.

I tried it (host: XP SP3, guest: 64-bit Vista) with VMware Workstation
6.5.3, but it didn't work. OTOH, I found out later on that the CPU in
the host isn't compatible with 64-bit OS's anyway, but I have the
feeling the error message VMware gave me was related to 64-bit OS's not
being supported as guest OS's.

I have googled around and it seems that it's possible, but I wanted
to confirm it first hand.

Has anybody here experience about installing a 64Bit Windows
Operating System in a virtual machine hosted by a 32Bit XP (on a
64bit Intel CPU)?

TIA

Lorenzo

PS Background info:
I need to translate some HW manuals which refer to Windows 7 GUI.
I don't necessarily want to clear and reinstall my working computer
just to see how the stuff works, so I thought I'd buy a Windows 7
ultimate, and install it in a Virtual Machine, but I was just told
that the specific (cheaper) licencing scheme I want to use requires
me to choose between 32-Bit and 64-Bit beforehand, and I don't want
to buy Windows 7 32-bit because I will install Windows 7 when I find
the time.

The following appears to work (in Word 97):

Hello:

I have tried in vain to Find words like

[ xxx'xxx]

and Replace them with nothing in Word2000 (Use wildcards).

Example:

Find

  [ku'la]   {note the leading space}

and Replace it with nothing (deleting it).

I thought

<\ \[*'*\]>

would work, but it does not.

Would anyone have a correct Find string for this?

Hans L

An alternative is to install Ubuntu on an external drive on your main PC
and play on that.

If you don’t trust yourself completelety, you can unplug your internal
hard disk while you install Ubuntu on the external drive. This is
"idiotensicher". (That’s what I need and do!).

Try this:

1. Select the text you want to number.
2. Select "Restart numbering" under "Format" -> "Bullets and numbering"

I don't know if it will work because sometimes I also have difficulties
with this (many times due to bad layouting from clients).

I have to do a very quick formatting for a job due today, and I can't find a way to restart paragraph numbering for each individual chapter of the document. I am using Word 2003.

I suspect you have a hardware problem somewhere, most likely your
videocard or memory. I'd check if they are all properly seated.
If you can still boot from CD, you could try using BartPE
(http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/) to get a familiar file browser and copy
your stuff to an external disk or USB flash drive (assuming your PC's
hard disk is not dead).
This looks like the route to go. Can be handy to have such a recovery help avalable also for new emergency cases!
I have downloaded the file, and will try it this afternoon.
Report to follow!
Report...
First I went to the local recycling shop, and shelled out 5 EURO for a 14 inch full color CRT monitor with video cable (but without a mains cable :-) ).
Then came the PE-CD builder . Preparing the PE-CD was almost intuitively. I only could not use the Windows XP Home cd for building it, because apparently this CD was not up to date: It needed SP3. But SP3 was unaccessible on the old box... Solution came from the W-XP Professional CD (newer) from my laptop.
This looks like a good preventive advice: make your recovery-CD before you need it...
Then I booted from my new tool. I could use some programs (DOS-box, Wordpad etc).
_Conclusion_: Memory at least not completely broken, Videocard functioning at least reasonably.
Then came the quite intuitive A43 File Manager Utility. Only the intuition appeared not to come with speed. I waited and waited, re-invoked the program, but nothing really showed. I walked the dog, and when I came back I had 4 instances of the program window visible. I closed what I did not need, and clicked on the C-drive.
I could have used another dog to walk for nothing really happened. After ages I clicked on the D-drive, and could find all files that were already in my Back-up.
I could also see the contents of secondary partitions on both drives. Going back to C: was a return to The Big Sleep.
_Conclusion_: My C-drive was unaccessible. Cooked, fried, broken, don't know what.
I tried inserting a USB-stick, but it was not recognised, also not after a reboot whith the stick inserted. Remember that my USB- Wireless Desktop gave up in an earlier stage!
_Conclusion_: The USB-port(s) are kaput, verarscht, geschmolzen (for non-German speakers: see the fate of C:)
BUT this morning I realised that I had grabbed the mouse from my laptop, which worked OK. This is a USB-mouse...
Final conclusion: 1. My wanted files stay inaccessible, I must reconstruct my templates, which is not too difficult..
2. I don't have a spare box for evaluation and playing around with Ubuntu and Linux translation software .
3. : ??? Who has an idea?

Then came the quite intuitive A43 File Manager Utility.  Only the intuition appeared not to come with speed. I waited and waited, re-invoked the program, but nothing really showed. I walked the dog, and when I came back I had 4 instances of the program window visible. I closed what I did not need, and clicked on the C-drive.
I could have used another dog to walk for nothing really happened.

After ages I clicked on the D-drive, and could find all files that were already in my Back-up.
I could also see the contents of secondary partitions on both drives. Going back to C: was a return to The Big Sleep.
Conclusion: My C-drive was unaccessible. Cooked, fried, broken, don't know what.

I tried inserting a USB-stick, but it was not recognised, also not after a reboot whith the stick inserted. Remember that my USB- Wireless Desktop gave up in an earlier stage!
Conclusion: The USB-port(s) are kaput, verarscht, geschmolzen (for non-German speakers: see the fate of C:)

BUT this morning I realised that I had grabbed the mouse from my laptop, which worked OK. This is a USB-mouse...

Final conclusion:
1. My wanted files stay inaccessible, I must reconstruct my templates, which is not too difficult..
2. I don't have a spare box for evaluation and playing around with Ubuntu and Linux translation software .
3. : ??? Who has an idea?

Hi Lorenzo,

Thanks for all the detail. I downloaded the "setupadvisor", but I
won't have time to run that for a few days.
I also did some digging for Eudora and it looks promising that it will work.

I will buy a full version rather than an "upgrade" when it gets to
that point as I always prefer a clean installation for any OS.

Often in web-based forums, the discussion continues over several
pages.

I am looking for a firefox extension, if one exists, that can open a
certain amount of URLs in tabs, by replacing a variable in the
address, for instance in the DVX forum
http://forums.atril.com/ubbthreads7/ubbthreads.php?ubb=postlist&Board=3&page=1
opens page 1
http://forums.atril.com/ubbthreads7/ubbthreads.php?ubb=postlist&Board=3&page=2
opens page 2
etc.

If there were an addon that could automatically replace the number
after "page=" with another, sequentially, I could open a certain
amount of pages in tabs, and quickly look at all the pages.

I am not looking for the DVX forum specifically, but in general,
expecially with those that only have a next/previous page link

Any idea if such an extension exists?

Lorenzo

Depends on which version you buy.

In any case, even if you buy an upgrade version, you cannot do an "in
place upgrade" from XP to 7, you always need to do a clean install.
That in turn requires you to reinstall all your applications.

Don't see why it cannot be possible. Just install in the second HD.
With all other versions you could also just install in another
partition. Again, I have never heard that it would be different with
7.

Ultimate contains (or you can download) a number of languages.

Some software does not work with 7. You can check with the Upgrade
Advisor from
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/get/upgrade-advisor.aspx

As far as buying it, the world and their brother sell it, including
Amazon, and if you are a student, the parent or guardian or spouse of
a student, you can get a copy at a seriously discounted price.

Below is an authorised UK site, but similar offers are (according to
MS) available also in the rest of Europe.

I currently have XP Professional and I am considering Windows 7
Ultimate. Can I just reformat the hard disc and install it or does it
need XP to already be installed?
What I would like to do is a dual boot as I have two separate
physical hard discs in my laptop
I _think_ I have found somewhere I can just buy the CD without buying
yet another PC ;). It says "choose between 35 languages". Does this
mean language-specific versions (in my case English) no longer exist
or is it something I need to watch out for?

Does Windows 7 break any software? I am specifically thinking here of
Eudora and Trados Suite

Thanks in advance

I suspect you have a hardware problem somewhere, most likely your
videocard or memory. I'd check if they are all properly seated.
If you can still boot from CD, you could try using BartPE
(http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/) to get a familiar file browser and copy
your stuff to an external disk or USB flash drive (assuming your PC's
hard disk is not dead).
This looks like the route to go. Can be handy to have such a recovery help avalable also for new emergency cases!
I have downloaded the file, and will try it this afternoon.
Report to follow!

Hello,

It looks like I was almost in time retiring my old computer after some
unquieting temporary phenomena (loss of image on monitor) some weeks ago:

Yesterday I was cleaning up and at last decided that I needed some
settings that the software appears to store in its installation folder
and that thus were not included in the data backup on my external HD.
During Dinner my monitor (CRT) had started making noises (clicking at
10-25 per second). When I was deliberating what to do, a loud bang
sounded, I smelled something and I immediately unplugged the mains. I
disposed of the CRT.

Today I try to continue, using one of the new monitors (TFT) for the old PC.
All I get is repeated reboots, with error msgs about a wrongly finished
Windows session.
I have cycled through all the boot options now, but nothing helps. at a

Yes, of course. I forgot the brackets around the square brackets.

Thanks for your quck reply!

Hi Rob,

Search for:
([a-z])^l([a-z])
Replace with:
\1 \2

\1 means the first bracketed expression, \2 is the second, and so on.

Hi,

I would like to search for a random letter followed by a manual line
break and another random letter, and replace it with that same first
letter, a space (instead of the line break) and that same second
letter. So essentially I'd like to replace a line break between two
letters with a space.

I've got:
Search with wildcards:
[a-z]^l[a-z]
Replace with:

I can't seem to find the right entry for the Replace box... Who knows
what I ought to enter?

TIA,

Rob

Since Google Translate seems to be in vogue at the moment, here are the
IntelliWebSearch settings:

Start=http://translate.google.com/translate_t?&sl=it&tl=en&text=
Description=Avoid sending confidential material to Google (see Google
Translate terms of use)
Notes=Change "it" and "en" above with the appropriate ISO codes
Quotes Off=Yes
Pluses Off=Yes
Encoding=UTF-8
