Thanks to the work done by Sean Batson there is now a MAC OS version of
Hercules Studio ready for download.
Also, the source tree now contains a Qt project file called
"HerculesStudio_MacOS.pro" which can be used to generate a Mac OS
build.

Jacob.

Hello all,

Hercules 3.07 has been released.

Binaries similar to the stock build, but with GUI support can be downloaded from
the site at http://www.mvsdasd.org/hercstudio .

hercules-3.07-1.i386.rpm: 32-bit Intel RPM

Subject: How do I IPL???
blackiron79

Hi,

I built Hercules Studio on Linux and it started fine. It looks very
interesting and fun! But for some reason I can't IPL my systems! These
systems run fine under Hercules normally but I can't enter any IPL
command in Hercules Studio. In regular Hercules I specify the config file with
the -f switch, and then I enter IPL xxx in the terminal command line. But on
Hercules Studio the command area does not accept input! I know it must be simple
but I didn't see any doc on this.

Thanks,

Jack

Apparently this only works on 3.0.7 and above (or at least not on the 3.0.6 I
had installed) and only with --enable-external-gui in the
hercules configure.

The --enable-external-gui switch WAS indeed mentioned on the Hercules
Studio website, but needing 3.0.7 of Hercules was not (although the
site does link to prebuilt binaries).

Now that I downloaded 3.0.7 and configured and built it properly,
Hercules Studio works great!

I hope this helps somebody.

Since Herc3.07 already has the gui enabled for Unix builds we can use the
pre-built RPM and then download the Hercstudio and should work fine. If it is
that straight forward I need to try Hercstudio. I am still using hercules 3.06
and Fish's Hercwin Gui. Thanks for this info.

Let's put first things first: Non of the official builds of Hercules for
Linux have GUI support. This includes also the latest Hercules 3.07.

There are 3 options:

1. Install Fedora or Slackware and use the package manager of these
distributions to install both Hercules and Hercules Studio. The
maintainers of these packages made sure to build the packages with gui
support.

2. Download Hercules rpm with gui support from the Hercules Studio site:
	 http://www.mvsdasd.org/hercstudio/hercules-3.07-1.i386.rpm
	 http://www.mvsdasd.org/hercstudio/hercules-3.07-1.x86_64.rpm
(these builds are supposed to be identical to the official builds, but
they also have gui support switched on).

3. Build Hercules yourself.

Regards,
Jacob.

Have used Hercules and Fish's Herc GUI for years under Windows. System died,
bought new one and installed Fedora 13. Directed to Hercules Studio page for
Linux GUI (thank's David Wade), and carefully read/followed instructions.

   - installed hercules-3.07-1.x86_64.rpm

   - installed Hercules Studio 1.1.0 in RPM 64-bit format

   - installed qt-x11

   - installed x3270

   - transferred old Windows/XP files to Linux

   - updated config file for new directory names

Can I use the DASD "files" created under a Windows system on my Linux system? I
can successfully do DASDLS to each volume. Do I need to copy/reformat the
"files"?

Installing Hercules Studio placed an icon at Applications -> System Tools. How
do I update this to include the "-f" argument that defines my config file?

When I open a terminal session and enter the Hercules Studio command by hand
including "-f /home/.....", it displays my devices in the Studio window. If I
try to IPL, I get the message that Address 0 is invalid. It appears that the
system is not recognizing the IPL parms from the config file.

I just don't know where to begin. Can someone please give me some guidance? If
you're feeling really generous, I can't get x3270 to connect to the MVS console,
either!

Hi & welcome to this group!

Your questions are more Hercules-related that Herculesstudio, so you'll have
better chances to get answers on that group.

I don't know Fedora too well (use Slackware myself), but I'll try to give some
generic answers:

1) You should be able to use the DASD files from Windows without problems - I
have transferred files between the two OSs before.

2) You will probably have some type of menu-editor in Fedora to edit the entry
that starts Hercules, so that you can add the "-f xxxx" option. Or you can look
for a "hercules.desktop" file (a text file) that contains the startup command.
It *might* be in /usr/share/applications/hercules/desktop (that's where it is in
Slackware)

3) If you can't connect x3270 to your mainframe, you will probably have to
configure your network. Normally Hercules uses tun/tap on Linux. After starting
the emulator, you might try to ping it from your Fedora session.

Well, I hope that at least this helps you a but further!

to add to Niels's anwer:

Installation
You do not need to install software this way. I guess that years of
using windows got us all used to the routine of
download-doubleclick-next-next-next. In Fedora (as well as other
distros, like Slackware) all packages (and hercules and hercstudio
included) are in Fedora repository. There are many advantages to using
the distribution's packages (automatic dependency solving, automatic
updates, less work, etc).
There is nothing wrong with what you did, but other users would be
better off installing the software directly from the repository.
Next time, I would use system->administration->add/remove software and
select hercules studio. Much simpler.

creating custom icon:
try to drag the icon to the upper bar and then right click on it. this
should enable you to change the command line and parameters. You can
also install alacarte (from the repository :) ) to edit each menu
entry.

As for the error message you received, this is strange, since hercules
is invoked with the configuration file you supplied. There is nothing
hercstudio does that would cause such an error (i.e., it's hercules that
reads the configuration file and process it, hercstudio just grabs the
output and present it).

Regards,
Jacob.

I have followed all the recommended steps from the Hercules Studio web page to
install the Studio package and download and compile Hercules 3.07-1 with the
./Configure statement.

I, too, cannot get the IPL command to work as expected. When issuing IPL from
the Command dropdown menu, I get the message Device 0000 is not in
configuration. I can enter an IPL command on the Command line (telling me the
GUI is working).

Additionally, I can't seem to locate any documentation specific to Hercules
Studio, particularly the Preferences screen. I realize this should be
intuitively obvious to most folks, but I am confused about the Hercule's
Directory entry. Does it want the directory entry of the Hercules program, or
does it want the directory of something else?

Finally, I have specified a Log directory in the Preferences, however I can't
seem to find the log files after the Hercules session has completed. Where are
they going?

Thank you in advance for your guidance.

click on the dials above to set the ipl device. The default device
number is the one the dial shows (which I guess is the initial "0000").

You are mixing two different things:
1. The hercules directory is in the *preferences* dialog of hercules
studio. If hercules is available on the usual program path, then you doi
not have to put anything in that field. Otherwise it should point to the
directory where hercules binary is installed.
2. The configuration editor edits *hercules configuration* (which is not
related to the above preferences). The fields should match the hercules
documentation. So you have a specific question about a specific field?

Hercules studio still does not have a documentation feature. Being a
voluntary effort, I hereby invite everyone to participate in that effort
and make a decent document that describes the usage of Hercules Studio
to new users.

You have to save the log. It does not get saved automatically.
Use file->save or file->save as.
The next release will enable specifying automatic save of the log.

I am more than happy to help in any that I can. You have no idea how much I
appreciate the efforts of both you and the folks who wrote Hercules.

I am wrestling wtih installing the cast of software on a Fedora Core 13 system
with 64-bit architecture, and have painted myself into corners more times than I
care to count. Fortunately, I can hit system reset, format the drive, and start
over .. and over .. and over.

So, one of my ongoing projects is to write down what works and make notes about
what doesn't. If you would like me to contribute to documentation on Hercules
Studio, I'd be honored to do so.

Here is a short list of new features in the upcoming Hercules Studio
1.2:

1. Clicking on the Hercules tray icon minimizes Hercules Studio, and
runs Hercules in daemon mode. Clicking the icon again restores the GUI.
2. A linear Gauge can now optionally display current mips instead of the
led display.
3. IPL command from the menu selection now presents ad-hoc parameters
which can be altered.
4. PSW can now be put in the status bar instead of a docked display.
5. Log can now be split into two separate logs, Hercules and the guest
operating system logs (requires Hercules 3.07).

The new release is planned for July 19, 2010.

hello all,

the first thing what i have to say is that i do not have any experience with the
OSX operating system..
i'm migrating from Windows to OSX an d would like to have my ZOS on the mac.
What i did is following:
1.- I installed the package Hercules 3.07 for snow leopard
2.- install Herculesstudio 1.1.0
3.- build a configuration file (hercules.conf)
4.- start the Herculesstudio.app
5.- Specify under Preferences the hercule's directory (/usr/local/bin/);
the configuration directory (the location where i put the config file) and the
logs directory..
6.- under File;open configuration; choose the right hercules.conf and look that
everything is ok.
7.- under Command; Power on..

but it seems that Herculesstudio doesn't find the configuration file..
Is there any possibility to specify the configuration file location ??. Maybe in
the com.mvsdata.HerculesStudio.plist ??

If so, how??
Thanks a lot for your support

You seem to be running a Hercules module that does not support external GUI.
You will have to compile hercules yourself, since the official hercules releases
are compiled without GUI support.

Hello members of the Hercules Studio group!

In the past months some features were added to Hercules Studio and a few
bugs were fixed. Not something fancy, but enough to justify another
release.

Hopefully before the end of June a new beta release will be out.

New added features/abilities:

* A notification is issued if Hercules was compiled without GUI support
(a common new user problem, since both the official and the daily
builds are done without GUI support on Linux)
* Free edit option to the Hercules configuration file
* VMWare-like panel as an option
* Colored log texts based on message severity
* Performance improvements
* Additional tape utilities introduced
* Changes in system requirements to accommodate newer platforms

Bugs fixed:

* High watermark tooltip got lost when MIPs display was switched
* More predictable behavior of some windows
* More graceful shutdown when Hercules is busy
* Better support for some large fonts
* Handle potential memory leak
* Fixed unpredictable behavior when running several instances
* Hetinit produced wrong results due to wrong parameters
* creating new configuration created a non-usable one

All of these changes are already in the repository, if anyone cares to
try them out. Feedbacks and/or requests are, as always, welcome.

Jacob.

Platform Ubuntu 11.04. I downloaded source and built Hercules 3.0.7 from source
in order to have the external gui working with Hercules Studio 1.3.0. GUI works
fine and Hercules 3.0.7 gets loaded fine.

However, I have error messages for ZLIB and BZIP2. Can anyone help me please to
find these packages for Ubuntu? Thank you.

Kind regards,
Ave

Please see
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/hercules-390/message/64887 .

Basically you need to issue the command
"sudo ln /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libpthread.so.0 /lib/libpthread.so.0 -s"

(for 32-bit the necessary command needs to be issued).

Regards,
Jacob.

For zip and bzip2 you have to install the development packages. In Ubuntu type:

sudo apt-get install libbz2-dev libzip-dev .

Then you have to confiure hercules with
--enable-external-gui --enable-cckd-bzip2 --enable-het-bzip2

Jacob.

Jacob, thank you.

I did:

sudo apt-get install libbz2-dev libzip-dev
to install the packages then

./configure --enable-external-gui--enable-cckd-bzip2--enable-het-bzip2

make

make install

make clean

Was successful in IPLing MVS3.8 using Hercules Studio 1.3.0. Nice work.

Kind regards,
Ave

On 2011-08-07 I installed hercstudio-1.3.0-1.x86_64.rpm, downloaded from the
link on the Hercules Studio home page. I've used HS for some time and have
'Autosave log' selected in the preferences. A couple of days ago I wanted to
look at a log but discovered that no logs have been autosaved since 1.3.0 was
installed. Edit->Save messages works fine, but I have to remember to use it. I'm
running Fedora 15 x86_64. What diagnostics, if any, can I provide?

Regards,
mcisho
