Re: Installing Linux390 (SUSE 7.0 2.2.16) on Hercules running Windows 2000 from CD
It took me about 4 hours to get SUSE L/390 up and running under WINXP
PRO:
- The first thing I did was go through the archives of this newsgroup
and read up on other experiences
- The next thing I did was burn the 3 ISO images
- I then set my CDROM drive to be shared over the network
- Modified the AWSOMA.TDF file so that it looks like this:
@TDF
/tapes/TAPEIPL.IKR FIXED RECSIZE 1024
/tapes/PARMFILE FIXED RECSIZE 1024
/tapes/INITRD FIXED RECSIZE 1024
TM
TM
EOT
- Started up the HERCGUI (nice one Fish) and I already had the
CTCI-WIN32 installed and knew it worked
- Created 4 3390 disks through the GUI
- Created a new config file which looks like this:
CPUSERIAL 000611
CPUMODEL 3090
MAINSIZE 128
CNSLPORT 3270
NUMCPU 1
NUMVEC 1
ARCHMODE ESA/390
SYSEPOCH 1900
TZOFFSET -0500
OSTAILOR LINUX
PANRATE 50
PGMPRDOS LICENSED
IODELAY 800

- IPL-ed 580 and up it came
- Replied to all messages using the prefix . (thats a fullstop BTW)
- Used various different Telnet clients (Hyperterm worked perfectly
fine) to run YAST and mounted my CDROM as SMB
- Installed the basic setup that it suggests and off and away for a few
coffees
- IPL'ed from 0101 and there I had it - L/390
On another PC I have installed under WINXP HOME, the whole Cygwin system
along with XFREE86 and use that to log into my L/390 (still trying to
get KDE2 to work though.) DB2 installed nice and easy but having a few
problems with Websphere.
When you download the ISO images from SUSE there should be a couple of
PDF documents, l390ga1 and l390gp, everything you need is basically
there.
