In a word, YES! But you can IPL it with a 19xx date.
As a matter of interest, this is how far I got with an IPL:

I tried to IPL an OS/390 V2R6. At this point (hercules-1.36)
it runs into the situation to load IEAVNP12 member of SYS1.NUCLEUS.
Since this DS is primary allocated in tracks but IEAVNP12 is not in the
first track (multitrack operations are not allowed this time but necessary
in this case !?!?!??) it runs to wait state PSW indicating the missing load
of IEAVNP12.
I am not sure if this case even occurs when trying to find IEAVNP12
in the directory of SYS1.NUCLEUS and not the module itself.
However this problem is under investiagtion as Roger told me...

Good luck,
Martin.

Sorry for my last faulty posting - here we go again:

Today I reserved a former testserver, an IBM PS 325 PII with apx 300 Mb
RAM,
and 2 SCSI Harddrives 3 Gb each. It was running NT 4 - next to it, on
the
desk, I've got a Linux 6.1 installbox and pretty soon, it won't run NT
anymore. Next thing, when Linux is up running, will be a install of
*Hercules/390* and upon that, I'll start looking for a 390 SCP, say
OS/390
or maybe better - to stay clean - ... this OS/360.
A giant in a matchbox - could be fun!

And it's my hope, that I can get some support here, if I'll need it !

Enough is enough.

to my knowledge, HCD still supports 3330 Mods 1,2 and 11's for VIO devices. (It
even supports 2305's). Could this be a way ?

I'm very new to this area of emulation. As a committed (committable?)
hobbyist, I'd like to find out how I can jump in to working with the
370/390 systems with the least amount of headache. Currently I have
Hercules 1.36 and a book on IBM/370 assembler. My past experience with
mainframe systems is as a user of VM/CMS and some JCL at university back
in 1993. My other experiences are with VAXen, DG minis and various PC
class hardware and software. Any pointers to online instructional
materials or other references would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Chris.

Mitch,

I would like to build a CDROM with Hercules, OS/360, and a minimal Linux
(AIUI OS/360 is PD and can be redistributed without licensing problems).
At the moment, I am stalled on the IEHIOSUP problem. I either need
to get this pesky little utility working in standalone mode, or else I need
someone who still has a 3330 (unlikely I know) to build a sysres from the
OS/360 XMIT libraries, run IEHIOSUP, and dump the sysres (or at least
SYS1.SVCLIB) to virtual tape. IEHIOSUP can run under MVS (but does
OS/390 still support 3330's?)

Which reminds me of the story about the guy being interviewed for a job
as a trainee operator. They asked if he knew what 3330's are. He replied
"nine hundred and ninety".

Regards, Roger.

Mitch,

Hercules 1.35 introduced a new command, loadcore, which just loads
a binary file into storage. It is expected that the first 8 bytes will be a
PSW that you can load using the restart command.

As for how to produce such a file using gcc370, I don't know, perhaps
Dan Horak can give you more info on this.

Is there any sense in make a simpler loader than "IPL". One that could

Dan, I think you can do this without too much difficulty.
In the first 8 bytes of the 64K file of zeroes, you need to code
a restart PSW which will jump to location X'10000':

00080000 00010000

This is a disabled, ECMODE, 24-bit PSW with instruction address
of 10000. Then use loadcore to load the core image file. Then
use the restart command to load the PSW. It should now branch
to location 10000 and start executing instructions. The first time
you do this, you will probably want to use single step mode so that
you can see what is happening. To do this, enter the s+ command
before the restart command.

I wonder how they load Linux/390 on a real machine? They must
have some kind of IPL CCW chain to load it in.

Cheers, Roger.

I have tried to run Linux/390, but it was a bit dirty ;-)

- I created "vmlinux" from the Linux sources - it contains the kernel, but
from address 0x00010000 and in ELF format
- with objcopy it was converted to raw binary image
- the image was appended to a file with 64K of zeroes
- and this result was loaded with loadcore into Hercules
- and it requires to be started from the 0x10000 address and I don't know
how ;-(

So if there are no other requirements during the start (done by normal IPL
process) it could the way to start Linux.

I thought it might be useful to summarize what Hercules can do at
this point:

* OS/360 MFT gets as far as formatting the job queue then starts
getting strange I/O errors. I suspect this is because I'm trying to
run it from a virtual 3390, which I suppose MFT must find kinda
   surprising, since they weren't invented in 1973 :-) I built a 2314
sysres but it won't IPL because it needs to have an IEHIOSUP
run on it, and you need MFT to run IEHIOSUP... :-(

If anyone fancies the task of writing a standalone or C version of
IEHIOSUP, do let me know...

Oh, and by the way, anyone joined to this list can post messages
to it, so don't be shy about posting your comments to
hercules-390@onelist.com if you feel you've got something to say
which might be of interest to other hercules testers.

Cheers, Roger.

Have you heard of someone who has tried this? I'd be interested to know
how they got on. Maybe Linux will win the competition to be the first
operating system to successfully IPL under Hercules.

Hello,

I am new to this list and while reading the list archive I saw a discussion
about gcc for S/370. You can look at http://linas.org/linux/i370.html and
there are patches for gcc (egcs) (the gcc has some support for MVS and
OpenEdition OSes), support for assembler and linker is already in the main
tree for Linux binutils (no HLASM compatibility). The gcc works well, I
think, because it is able to compile the Linux/390 kernel.

I think (from the reaction of Linux/390 author), that there is a person who
can run Linux/390 in the Hercules environment. So please excuse my low
knowledge of this area of computing.

			 Dan

PS: I don't have any real experience with the REAL systems like S/390. I
work mostly with Linux and M$ and I was only impressed with the effort to
port Linux to this systems.

Hello all. I have uploaded version 1.35. New in this release:

* Improved control panel user interface
* New control panel commands: start, stop, restart, ipl, loadparm
* New loadcore command to load HMC processor disk image files
* S/370 interval timer
* Correct 31-bit mode linkage in lock assist instructions
* Support for PCI in ESA/390 mode as well as S/370 mode
* Correct problem causing false channel protection checks

The major change is the new control panel. Instead of starting
Hercules with the ipl command, you now start it with the hercules
command, connect your console, and then issue the ipl command
from the control panel command line.

The advantages of the new control panel are:
1. You can enter commands at any time
2. You can scroll up and down the displayed messages
3. You can reipl without restarting hercules (the console session
remains connected across IPLs, and device files remain open
so you can IPL more than once from the same tape for example)
4. There are new stop, start, restart, and loadparm commands
5. There is a continuous display of the PSW and CPU status

Of course this makes the programming of the display a bit more
complex than before -- now the display runs on the main thread and
the CPU runs on its own thread, and messages are piped to the
control panel thread instead of just being simple printf's. Hopefully
this won't slow things down too much. If you find bugs in the new
control panel, or you just don't like it, then let me know.

The good news is, I believe we may be at last within sight of seeing
an IPL of a real system (for the moment I'll leave it to you to guess
whether I'm thinking of OS/390, VSE, or VM). I hope to have some
more news about this soon.

Thanks to all who have helped to pinpoint the bugs so far. Each bug
fixed gets us a little bit further down the road towards that magical
"specify system parameters" message, which I believe cannot be
far away now.

About 5 (?) years ago I ported the gcc370 compiler to OS/2.
It worked well enough to compile and run an APPC/MVS
application (I wasn't bothered about whether it could compile
itself) but, yes, there were some things that needed fixing in the
code generation. The problem was that after several months of
studying the compiler internal docs in gcc-info I still couldn't work
out how to code the rules that transformed the compiler i-code
into S/370 machine instructions. The documentation seemed
to assume that you already knew how it worked. Or maybe I
was just thick. The other problem was that there was no runtime
library. I did make some headway in creating one but no-one
seemed very interested in the project, and then the P/390 came
along so I gave up.

But enough history. The dignus compiler seems to fill the bill now,
or so I have read, I haven't tried it myself.

gcc/370 has existed for a while. The problem is that it doesn't
work very well, at least that is the way I understand it.

It isn't yet good enough to compile itself.

I have a copy of Rick Fochtman's OS/360 Archive CD which has all of the
source code for MFT and MVT, as well as a set of DLIBs and RESLIBs in
TSO XMIT format. It is excellent.

I've built a 2314 volume from the unloaded RESLIBs, but now I am stuck
because the SVCLIB needs an IEHIOSUP in order to resolve the TTR's in
the Open/Close/EOV modules. At least, I think that's what's causing the
problem. The trouble is, without a running OS, I can't run IEHIOSUP. A
classic
chicken and egg situation. I am thinking of writing a C version of
IEHIOSUP,
unless anyone has any better ideas??

As for the cross assembler, there's an excellent tool called the Tachyon
Assembler
which runs under Windows (and Linux too I believe). I've tried a demo and
it's
absolutely brilliant. It's at http://www.tachyonsoft.com/tachyon if anyone
is
interested. This is not free software, there's an annual license fee of
$349, which
seems to me quite reasonable. When it comes to license fees, I tend to be
in the
Gates camp rather than the Stallman camp, i.e. I think software developers
need
to be paid for their efforts. IMO, free software is a myth. Most of the
Linux/GNU
stuff has been developed by people at university, who have plenty of spare
time
paid for by their university, which means the rest of us pay for "free"
software
through our taxes. Unlike Mr Gates, I have yet to make any money out of
software
development, but that's another story 8-(

Roger,

  Great progress.

I wonder if the Linux/390 project has gotten anywhere with a gcc
crosscompiler for Linux x86 to IBM/390. This would be a great tool for
generating code for Hercules.

Also any luck tracking down MVT source?

Hi Roger,

Thanks for your work. I don't have LINUX running at this point, but my
interest is increasing exponentially.

I have uploaded version 1.34.

New in this release:

* New DASDLOAD program to create a CKD volume from
   unloaded PDS files
* Correct CKD module to prevent record not found error on
   multitrack Read Count CCW

The purpose of the DASDLOAD program is to build an OS/360
IPL volume using the unloaded PDS files from Rick Fochtman's
OS/360 Archive CD. When I get a successful IPL, I'll announce
it here (after opening a bottle of champagne)

Sam, thanks for joining this list.

If you hit "Messages" at http://www.onelist.com/community/hercules-390
there's an archive search box. There's nothing there yet, of course, but
I guess something will appear in there in due course.

Regards, Roger.

Hi Roger,

Thanks for the info. BTW, is it possible to get digests from this
forum, the way the LISTSERV lists have them? Thanks in advance for your
help.
