Folks,
.. Unless I am mistaken ...
It came to me that, on 31st of december 2004, IBM has withdrawn from
marketing the LAST hardware machine with S/370 capabilities (be it native,
LPAR or SIE). This machine was the G6 (M/T 9672).
The only hardware left in the IBM catalog (from that line) are the z/xxx
Machines which AFAIK are not even capable of running S/370 Mode SIE
(furthermore, z/VM doesn't even allow it).
Therefore, the only S/370 capable machines left to have are the various
emulators (including, but not limited to, hercules).
So, should you want to obtain an infrastructure to execute code that
requires a S/370 architecture, you no longer have the choice to buy new IBM
hardware to create that infrastructure nativelly (without emulation software
that is). Your choices are now :
- Acquire an IBM Machine (used).
- Acquire a non-IBM PCM machine (used.. new ?)
- Get a software emulator.
