Subject: [babble] Margin problem?

Hi,

I have a problem with this page:
http://www.sormland <http://www.sormlandsparlor.com/bo-och-leva/15/laenkar>
sparlor.com/bo-och-leva/15/laenkar

In IE 6 the layout breaks according to my customer.

This page works as expected:
http://www.sormland
<http://www.sormlandsparlor.com/bo-och-leva/14/skola-och-omsorg>
sparlor.com/bo-och-leva/14/skola-och-omsorg

My problem is that I can not test in IE 6 - I am sitting on Vista and IE
7 right now and my computer with XP and IE 6 is on repair, so could not
troubleshoot myself... (or are the a solution for multi IE on one
machine for Vista out there, like on XP?)

I guess that were some problem with margins or padding....

/mikke

Subject: 301 Redirect Question

Hello all,

I recently purchased 7 domain names for a client and have pointed them, using my
registrar's redirection service, to the active domain name where their site
resides.

Using a check server header tool
(http://www.metamend.com/seo-tools/http-header-request-viewer.html) I tested to
find out if the redirect was a 301, and verified that the server response showed
301, which it did:

"HTTP Status Code: HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently"

However . . . the Help page at the registrar recommends that to ensure good SEO,
that you go ahead and host the domain name that you're pointing and add the 301
redirect at a file level, using htaccess or PHP or whatever is appropriate.

I could take this latter route, but it would cost the client $ and I am not sure
how essential that is for good SEO, which is the objective.

Does anyone have any info on this? For good SEO, is it necessary to host the
domain that's being pointed or is a basic registrar redirect sufficient?

Thank you!
Judy Wilson

As far as I know there should be no distinction between both methods. Of
course the IP address changes but that should be quite normal with a
301, so I do not think that Google treads them different, but of course
you can never know.

I was recently working on a design and discovered that
my margin-top value in % was being based on the WIDTH
of the parent box. Imagine my surprise when I found this
to be according to the specs!

http://www.w3.org/TR/CSS21/box.html#propdef-margin

Has anyone a rationale for this, or is it just
the insanity that it appears to be?

How is the width a constant? A float with a few words
will be some width based on the word count, much like
the line count determines height in many cases.

And it really shouldn't matter that the height is
variable. Absolute children can find the bottom of
those elements, so why not margins? Safari actually
does it (admittedly in violation of those stupid
specs) so clearly it's easily doable. This is just a
matter of the W3C deciding something that has no
rational logic behind it, as far as I can tell.

Try thinking of a single case where having vertical
% margins being decided by a width would be advantageous.
There are no such cases. Essentially this limits %
vertical margins to cases where the parent is a square!

I would like to call them Idiots, but I can't be sure
yet that there's not some extremely convoluted reason
it has to be this way. If that turns out to be true,
I may just retire...

Hello,

I don't know if this is the right forum to post in, but I am getting nowhere
fast with the google resources.

I manage a 'blogger' blog, and have discovered that the 'permalink URL'
generated is not the actual URL, resulting in 404 error pages whenever you
try to read a recent post. All my settings seem correct and I am pulling my
hair out (not literally) trying to get this figured out.

Is there anyone in this group who has some knowledge to share on this issue?

Deep thanks offered,

Hello,

I have been wrestling with this problem and beyond my depth, kind of
floating in water wings. I would appreciate any help with this I can

Problem: Trying to get a flash movie to work in IE6+ and to substitute
content if not. Specifically the big problem is to get the CSS drop
down menus (thanks Suckerfish!!) to be IN FRONT of the movie. In IE,
they drop down BEHIND. <sigh>

So, I thought the brilliant SWFOBJECTS situation might help, but I am
a Javascript beginner. I'm trying to make things right for the Client

I didn't put any source code because I think it is viewable, but I am
happy to post whatever anyone needs to think this over.

Very grateful for any help you can give me.

This may help you with the first issue:

As for the dropdowns appearing behind the flash, try this:
Add wmode="transparent" to the embed tag

Hi Kitty!
I've recently had the same problem before...the issue is NOT your CSS
z-index. Before I figured this out, I tried everything from using inline
styles, JavaScript, JQuery to make sure my other stuff have a higher z-index
than the Flash, but all to no avail.

The issue here is that by default, Flash sits above other HTML elements.
There are a couple of solutions:
1. set the Flash parameter 'wmode' to 'opaque'.
2. set the Flash parameter 'wmode' to 'transparent'.
http://highslide.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=609 for deeper explanation
and example code

In my situation, both did the trick. You lucked out because there is no
JavaScript involved; simply change your Flash <object> and <embed>
attributes and you'll have it working in both IE and FF.

Wish you the best of luck!

The first thought that came to mind for me was that it feels too structured
to represent an artist/painter.
Maybe try putting yourself in Gustav's shoes when he was painting, and build
the site with the mindset he might have been in when painting a picture, and
design the site with that kind of feeling?

I''m probably thinking more along the lines of how musicians have been doing
their web sites.
These may not be the best examples, but I'm thinking like these two sites
http://www.kennychesney.com/home.php and
http://www.johnnycash.com <http://www.johnnycash.com/>

Something that gives a visitor a stronger feel that the artist is behind the
design of the site, or at least helped play a part in how it was, or would
be, designed.

Hi, David. It's not really clear what the site is about. Is it about
Klimt [whom I adore] ? Is it about Chelsea creek studio? When I clicked
'next' I came to a page about celiac disease. There's too much different
stuff going on and no framework to hang it on. Also, there's too much
white space and the layout is too loose.

All this, of course, is imho. Hope it helps!

I've been asked to shed light on a strange
thing in email code, but I'm clueless. Here's
the query I got:

"I use Thunderbird, and when I reply to emails from a certain individual, I
notice that extra whitespace is added to the quoted text (double spacing between
paragraphs). I checked the HTML code for my replies and isolated the difference
to the "!&!" at the beginning of the style definition. Obviously, this Here's an
example:"

<style>
#mid_!&!AAAAAAAAAAAYAAAAAAAAAFMekRwK7d1EpxGNjmVH+NbCgAAAEAAAABs9rhfIGE5CpTUvvlW3\
QdsBAAAAAA==_cox_net p.MsoNormal,
#mid_!&!AAAAAAAAAAAYAAAAAAAAAFMekRwK7d1EpxGNjmVH+NbCgAAAEAAAABs9rhfIGE5CpTUvvlW3\
QdsBAAAAAA==_cox_net li.MsoNormal,
#mid_!&!AAAAAAAAAAAYAAAAAAAAAFMekRwK7d1EpxGNjmVH+NbCgAAAEAAAABs9rhfIGE5CpTUvvlW3\
QdsBAAAAAA==_cox_net div.MsoNormal { margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; font-size: 12pt;
font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; color: black; }
</style>

"The long string of characters in the style name, including the !&!, is taken
from the message ID. But interestingly, if I remove the !&!, the extra
whitespace goes away."

I've discovered that .MsoNormal is MS Office code,
but that's the extent of my knowledge. Can anyone
weigh in on this?

That's not possible. If you expose the BCC addresses for a user's email
client to send to them, then you're also exposing them so that they can
see what they are.

What you need to do is manage the delivery "behind the scenes" by
publishing a general "role" address (such as "inquiries@...")
that goes to a private distribution list on their mail server. Then
nobody can see what addresses the email is ultimately delivered to.

As some of you may know, I help produce Web design and development online
conferences throughout the year.

However, we also produce a traditional, face-to-face Web design conference with
AIGA Orlando.

In Feb. 2011, we have speakers from Twitter, Adobe, Tiny Speck, Mailchimp,
Comcast Interactive, and more for two-days of Web design goodness.

More information can be found here:

If you have any questions in the meantime, please don't hesitate to ask.

Best,
Christopher Schmitt

Hi, all!

If you are interested in CSS3 and want to know a bit more, we're doing a free
online, 2-hour CSS3 Book Launch for a couple of great books and authors
tomorrow:

- "CSS3 Quickstart Guide" by Jason Cranford Teague
- "Stunning CSS" by Zoe Gillenwater

There will be two 30 minute presentations by each of the authors then some Q+A
afterwards.

To register for free and get more information:

Hope you can make it!

Best,
Christopher Schmitt
