Hello,

In the city of Kansas City, KS there are 1,355 Hmong according to the 2010
census. Overland park is still small with a popluation of 61 according to the
2010 census but the county of Johnson County has grown to 195.

In the Kansas City KS-MO Metro Area there are 1,754 Hmong according to the 2010
census with 1,599 living on the Kansas side and 155 on the Missouri side.

But this number is still disputed as their were many non-respondants and the
Hmong Church. The Hmong Churches in Kansas City can be used as a base for this
example. For example their are 5 Hmong churches in Kansas City and around 1,500
- 1,600 members total. The pastors and other community leaders believe their
are still 60-70 known families who still pratice the traditional religion. This
number of 60-70 families is known because many of the Christian families still
have families who still pratices the traditional religion in the Kansas City
region.

We have an Hmong association here in Kansas (Hmong American Inc) that may be
able to give a better insight on this topic than I can.

Thanks,

Joshua Xiong

CALL FOR PAPERS

Transforming Lives: Hmong Women, Gender and Power

Abstract Deadline: January 31, 2012

Chia Youyee Vang, Faith Nibbs, and Ma Vang, Editors

In the limited popular and academic narratives about Hmong refugees/Americans,
discussions about Hmong women often associate them with the family, which
reinforces a link with domesticity and reproduction. Hmong women are also
portrayed as victims of their patriarchal society. These representations can
underscore perceptions of Hmong culture as hindering women's "assimilation" into
American society and perpetuating violence against women. The few monographs
that have been published about Hmong women view them within the limited
framework of tradition versus modernity and also interpret Hmong culture as
oppressive to women. Existing scholarship thus misses the opportunity to explain
the complexity of Hmong American women in the context of globalization, and to
situate them within the growing body of scholarship that highlights the
troublesome place of Asian women at the intersection of racial difference and
productive worker to emphasize ways they empower their lives and communities. We
propose a collection of essays that goes beyond portrayals of victimhood in war,
violence, and displacement to foreground ways in which Hmong (refugee) women
exert agency and transform both their own lives and those of others. This volume
will interrogate the racial and gendered logics of displacement and migration,
as well as the paradigms of culture and patriarchy.

As the first edited volume focusing on Hmong women, this project demands an
innovative interdisciplinary approach in which we borrow from different
theoretical frameworks to generate a materially rich and conceptually rigorous
dialogue. Therefore, we seek essays that explore myriad perspectives and involve
a range of disciplinary approaches. These include critical race theory,
diasporic and transnational frameworks, gender and migration studies, feminist
critique, media studies, and ethnography. We are also open to other perspectives
and methods.

We invite contributions on Hmong women and empowerment that engage with but are
not limited to the following topics: history, politics, education, community
organizing/activism, religion, motherhood, ritual performance, gender and
sexuality, business, media, culture, race relations, development, and artistic
expression. We are in conversation with the University of Minnesota Press about
publishing this edited book.

Please send a 250-300 word abstract and one page CV by January 31, 2012 via
email to Chia Youyee Vang at vangcy@.... Selected abstracts will be notified
by February 29, 2012.

THe monument was on a hill and was dedicated to the fallen soliders.
My friend and I offered prayers.
I've felt drawn to the momument and the surrounding and wanted to ask if anyone

Apologies for any cross-postings. After almost a decade, I thought this summer would be a good time to launch a new website for the Hmong Studies Journal. Please have a look at the new site and I appreciate any feedback!

An exciting year is planned for the journal. We have received many submissions on a wide range of topics pertaining to Hmong Americans and the broader diaspora for Volume 13 and the peer review process will be occurring over the summer and fall. In addition, the journal will be publishing a special issue this year featuring articles from several expert scholars who have been invited to write about population, demographic, socioeconomic, health and other trends in the Hmong American community that are apparent in recently released census data as well as other sources. Both of the new issues of HSJ will be published in December 2012.

Hmong Cultural Center would very much appreciate assistance in helping get the news out of an exciting new webinar outreach initiative for our Hmong 101 program. Since 2003, this program has provided presentations to more than 5,000 service providers in Greater Minnesota and Wisconsin. In the past few years, the U.S. Dept. of Justice, Community Relations Program in Chicago has adapted our curriculum for diversity training seminars in the Upper Midwest. HCC has recently updated and expanded the program curriculum for outreach in upcoming webinars to service providers across the country. With this new initiative, HCC would particularly like to target service providers in areas of the country with expanding Hmong populations but fewer educational resources related to the community including outstate MN, WI, the Carolinas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri and Alaska. The Hmong 101 Webinar program is open to people everywhere, the interactive presentations focus on basic material related to history and culture for a non-academic audience who possess little previous information about the Hmong.
