Hi Jon,
One important feature I'd recommend for any bio-container (which you see
done in all the commercially-made ecospheres) is to leave plenty of air
above the waterline. This acts as a buffer zone for gas exchange and
helps prevent excess pressure from building up in there. Leaving at
least 1/5 of the container empty to provide such air space should be a
reasonable amount. The containers I like to use for this hobby are
plastic soda bottles. Cheap, but they do the job. If you want a
container that looks nicer, you could try buying a do-it-yourself glass
snowglobe kit from a store like

Would the rubber gasket be safe for the marine life? ... you see ... air ... and ... be a ... glass ... only way ... start...

you'd have to ask them to be sure. but i don't see why not. looking into culturing live foods for my fish tank (which spawned out of biospheres, ironically)...

That's a good question, actually. Those snowglobes aren't specifically designed to contain living things, so who knows what kinds of chemicals they make the...
