Main Talk Title: Lisp: The Programmable Programming Language

Main Talk Abstract:

We will examine some features of Common Lisp which make it a powerful,
flexible programming language. Many of these features have recently been
adopted by newer languages such as Java and Python, while others are
still unique to Lisp.

The presentation will be followed by a discussion examining how Java
(and other languages) have made use of some Lisp features, and also
which Lisp features not yet widely adopted might be of benefit to other
languages.

Main Talk Biography:

Kaveh Kardan joined the Academy for Creative Media at the University of
Hawaii in October of 2003, where he is advising on the program's
technological aspects and teaching software engineering, gaming, and
animation courses. He was Manager of Software Research and Development
at Square USA in Honolulu for five years, during which time he and his
team developed software for the computer graphics feature film "Final
Fantasy: The Spirits Within", as well as software and tools for
future-generation video games.

Prior to moving to Honolulu, Kaveh worked in Montréal, Canada, as a
freelance software, media, and game developer. While in Montréal, he
also worked as software engineer at Système Taarna, developing cloth and
hair animation software, and at Softimage, where he developed the first
animation module in 1988. His career began at Neo-Visuals, in Toronto,
where for a number of years he developed 3D rendering, modeling, and
animation software. Kaveh graduated with a BSc in mathematics from MIT
in 1985.

His interests include computer graphics and animation, artificial
intelligence, software engineering and programming languages,
computer-assisted storytelling and cinematics, games, movies,
science-fiction, ultimate frisbee, and soccer.

Pattern Workshop: Command Pattern

Workshop Abstract:

Encapsulate a request as an object, thereby letting you parameterize
clients with different requests, queue or log requests, and support
undoable operations.
