You have open-source software. Have you made a lot of money?

Nothing has ever been "sold" to UVic. UVic has rights over what we
produce at work. That's the case for anyone who does creative work in
their workplace, unless their contract specifically says not. I would
guess that your employer has some rights over your work, and might
assert them if it wished to prevent you from open-sourcing it.

What exactly do you want from JCloze? It consists of dozens of libraries
of code. Ask a straight question and you'll probably get a straight
answer, but "give me everything" is not practical, because I'm not
legally entitled to.

Hello everyone,

I saw some older messages about this issue - so I just wanted to
check. Is the best way to do this still by downloading and installing
the SIL Encore IPA fonts and the Tavultesoft Keyman?

Has anyone been doing this recently with some examples online? Does
anyone have any tips for inputting phonemic symbols into hot pot based
on experience?

All help appreciated

Thanks

Hi,

I hardly dare to ask, because it probably would mean work for you.

Is the following possible?????

There's a picture (for example a house) visible and you have to drag
words to the the right place in the house (for eample "BED" to the
bedroom). It sounds to me like a JMATCH, but is it technically
possible????

Thanks

Paul from the Netherlands.

Hi there,

As far as I know, the only Unicode fonts SIL offers are SIL Doulos and Gentium:

<http://www.sil.org/computing/catalog/show_software_catalog.asp?by=cat&name=Font\
>

I'm pretty sure the Encore fonts are NOT Unicode, and if they're not, you
should avoid them like the plague. Hot Potatoes, like the Web itself, is a
Unicode-based tool, and using proprietary font and encoding systems is
never going to work properly. It will also doom your data to almost instant
obsolescence.

Cheers,
Martin

Hi John

Alas, it's not that simple. Some of the code used in that product developed on
personal time may be covered by legal agreements with the university
protecting the same code implemented in future versions of Hot Pot, some may
have been developed on university time in which case the university owns it,
and on and on. Now that Hot Potatoes code has commercial value, everyone pays
more attention to what happens to it - even if it is code from 6 years ago.

Hi Bob

Martin's reply has arrived just as I was writing mine.

The important thing is that you use a Unicode font, regardless of who produces
it. I'll bet fonts that ship with Windows and with Office include the IPA
characters, but I haven't checked. The advantage to Unicode fonts as that the
user's computer will look for a font that contains the character if the
default font doesn't. It also ensures that your data and pages will be
readable by computer systems into the foreseeable future.

Hi there,

This has been discussed several times, and the basic issue is that it's
easy to create an individual exercise like this, but quite hard to create
an authoring tool that would suit all situations. Nevertheless, it will
probably be one of the item types included in Hot Potatoes 7. We are not
going to add it to HotPot 6.

Cheers,
Martin

There are actually two problems here:

1. Finding a Unicode font that has IPA characters.

          This is easy; there are loads. Arial Unicode MS is an obvious one;
Lucida Sans Unicode comes with Windows 2000 or XP, and also includes IPA.
You can also find Code2000 on the Web.

2. Finding a way to type the characters (a keyboard map, or an Input Method
Editor).

          This is harder; many of the old solutions had nice keyboard maps
with them. However, you can create your own keyboard map using the
Tavultesoft Keyman tool, or Microsoft's free tool:

          <http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/tools/msklc.mspx>

Hello again,

Thanks for both your replies. I'm afraid I don't know what unicode
is :-/ ...another thing that's gone beyond my computer knowledge

http://www.staff.ncl.ac.uk/r.w.gilmour/tests/test.htm

I did the test below by writing with SIL Sophia IPA93 font in word.
Then, saved as html from word and put it into Jquiz - saved it as an
html file again and put it up on the web.

Will this work? Are there issues about doing it this way? Can you
tell from the source if this is unicode or not?

Bob

Hi there,

This is ABSOLUTELY the wrong way to go. Most people will not see the
correct characters unless you use Unicode. I don't think SIL should even be
distributing these old fonts any more; they're actually worse than useless,
unless your objective is only to produce a print document that you will
print off today and then delete from your hard drive!

If you don't know about Unicode, it's really time to learn; otherwise you
will waste a lot of time creating materials that no-one can use. It's
pretty straightforward -- here's an intro:

<http://www.alanwood.net/unicode/>

Here's the main Unicode site:

Thanks for this. So, can unicode fonts be typed directly into hot
potatoes or is it better created in word, saved as html and then
added to the hot potatoes file?

Hi there,

You can't type a Unicode font; you can type a series of codepoints,
which are displayed using glyphs from the current font.

Don't ever use Word for creating Web documents. It's a disaster.

I think the first thing to do is what I suggested before: learn how
Unicode works and what it is. Once you have an understanding of that,
you'll be in a better position to examine the available options for your
own situation.

This is what I do to insert IPA characters in HotPot:

1. Make sure you have a capable Unicode font selected in the main
interface (Options / Font) and that the same font is available to your
students and included in the font list in the Config / Appearance panel.
That will ensure that what you see in the app and in the page is the
same as what your students see. Of course, they must also have that font
on their computer to see exactly the same thing, but if they have any
Unicode font that covers the right range, they should see the right
characters. In the config I usually specify a series of fonts in a list,
so it's more likely one of them will be available on any given computer:
"Lucida Sans Unicode", "Arial Unicode MS", Code2000...

2. Start the Windows Character Map (Start / Programs / Accessories /
System Tools / Character Map).

3. Choose the same font in Character Map.

4. Find the characters I want, double-click them to add them to the text
box, and copy/paste them into HotPot.

It might seem from this that fonts are important, but actually they're
not. You're not "typing in a font"; the font is not somehow included in
the page, and the characters don't contain any reference to the font.
What you're typing is a string of numbers, each representing a codepoint
(a character, essentially) in the Unicode standard. The application (the
browser, or HotPot, or any application) uses the glyph (character shape)
for each codepoint to display it. The point is that if it's Unicode,
every font will have the same glyph in the same place, so it doesn't
matter if you don't have the right font; some other font will do, as
long as it covers the range of codepoints you're using. If it's not
Unicode (like the old SIL fonts), then fonts will have different glyphs
in different places, and your document is useless.

Cheers,
Martin

Hi,
I've had a look at the pages on the HotPot site regarding this,
downloaded the player and copied the code.
I've made an exercise using audio files, which initially I saved as wav
files and had problems using different browsers as you pointed out.
I've converted them to mp3, but what I don't understand is where to
add the amended code.
Presumably it's an addition to the code that HotPot places in the table
when a media object is inserted?

I'm a novice at this. I can edit code to amend image sizes and text,
but have no real understanding.

This is my original code:

<object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000"
codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/
swflash.cab#version=7,0,14,0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"
width="100" height="30"> <param name="movie" value="sounds/yellow.mp3"
/> <a href="sounds/yellow.mp3" alt="sounds/yellow.mp3">Click to
play</a></object>

Where do I put the extra bit in?

If the Flash Player is included in the folder with the sounds, what
amends do I need to make to the hbs_mp3_player.swf bit of code please?

Cheers,
Liz

Yeah, yeah, I'm replying to my own message, I know ....

I've worked out what and where for the code.

My lesson: "Think and try things before panicking and sending emails."

Thanks for reading though. :-)

Very cute player though. Love it.

Thanks.

Sounds like you haven't created the HMTL page. Click on Create Web Page and
you should be fine.

Hi there,

If you're using the Flash mp3 player, you can't use the Insert Media Object
function. That will suffice to insert a Flash movie you have which is
standalone, but if you want to use our player, you need to follow the
instructions in the tutorial exactly: copy and paste the code for the
player into the HotPot exercise, and add the path to your own MP3 file. So
in your case, it would look like this:

<object data="hbs_mp3_player.swf" width="24" height="17"
style="vertical-align: bottom;" type="application/x-shockwave-flash">
<param name="type" value="application/x-shockwave-flash" />
<param name="src" value="hbs_mp3_player.swf" />
<param name="data" value="hbs_mp3_player.swf" />
<param name="codebase" value="hbs_mp3_player.swf" />
<param name="FlashVars" value="TheSound=sounds/yellow.mp3" />
<param name="allowScriptAccess" value="sameDomain" />
<param name="movie" value="hbs_mp3_player.swf" />
<param name="loop" value="false" />
<param name="quality" value="high" />
<param name="wmode" value="transparent" />
<a href="narrative1.mp3">sounds/yellow.mp3</a>
</object>

You'll need to make sure the hbs_mp3_player.swf file is sitting in the same
folder as your exercise page, and the mp3 file is in a subfolder called
"sounds". If you've done all that, and it still doesn't work, post the URL
and we'll check it out.

Cheers,
Martin

Hi there,

You have authored an exercise, but you haven't exported it to create a Web
page (so you obviously haven't actually worked through the tutorial). Work
through the tutorial, then you'll see how it works.

Hi Martin,
Thanks for the reply. I twigged that I didn't need the code generated
by choosing a player and managed to work it out. It does work too. :-)

I'm using the Java HotPotatoes6 with OSX. I know you're still working
on the JCross. I created my own words in the grid and added the clues,
but although it's saved as a jcw file, when I try to save as an htm
file nothing happens. Is this me or a bug?

Thanks again.

Hi Liz

I'm writing the Java JCross. If you've created the grid and clues and
get nothing in an output page, that's a bug. Please send an email to
me with your jcross data file and web page as attachments and I'll
take a look.

By the way, I've created a version of the "autocreate grid from list
of words" feature. It will be included in the next release of Java
Hot Potatoes. That release has been delayed because it is also
including a revamped system for generating texts for the interface
items to allow translation of the interface. That's taken a lot
longer than I anticipated. I've got it more or less working but have
not tested it yet. I hope to have something released within the next
week or so.

What CSS do I have to change so the div wraps around the photo. Right now the photo spills outside. Otherwise I'm forced to create a table cell?

HI John,

The image is set to float right, and floats take elements out of the
normal flow of the page. To get the layout you want, I think you may
have to create some divs to contain the text and the picture. Put the
picture after the text, put each in a div, and set the text div to float
left.

Cheers,
Martin

I don't see it as any better than NetQuiz, but something anyhow.

I have already downloaded the Flash Player and used it to add sound to
jmt files.
Is it possible to use the same code to add sound to the instructions?

At the moment the code for the written instructions are after the
</head> in the coding, would I have to move them?

Can I add an edited line of code, as on the Tutorial about the flash
player, if so, where would I add it?

I need to point out that I am not an experienced coder, my knowledge is
growing exponentially at the moment!

Thanks,
Liz

Try it out, would be my suggestion. Then you see what happens.

On my website www.hennyjellema.nl you can see different ways of
using sound. Maybe it gives you the idea. Look here:

this is with Pygs'player ( see the files of this forum) :

http://www.hennyjellema.nl/praktijkvakken/theezetten/theezetten2.htm

this is with Martins' flash player whitout a slider:
http://www.hennyjellema.nl/praktijkvakken/pizza/introluistertest.htm

Here with a slider:
http://www.hennyjellema.nl/taal/sprookjes/roodkapje/roodkapje1.htm

and here with windows media player:
http://www.hennyjellema.nl/taal/sprookjes/roodkapje/roodkapje4a.htm

You always can put the sound code in the instructions field and also
in the section of the reading text, which can be very practical.

Why don't you put it in the instruction area of the configuration
screen?

Open the configuration screen, first tab. "Titles and instructions".

Beste Martin and or others,

I still find it very difficult to change hot pot files by doing
something with CSS.

As far as I understand, the basic of CSS is, that one keeps
the `dressing up' of a page separated from the (html)rest.

For example, if I look in the source of Hot Potatoes Homepage I see
this:

<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="hotpot6.css"></link>

If I do the same on the page `news' I see the same:

<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="hotpot6.css"></link>

that's no surprise, because the pages have the same presentation.

And if I go to the Licenses page, I see this code:

<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="css_styles.css"></link>

the same at the quandeary page :

<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="css_styles.css"></link>

and again, everybody with clear eyes can see that the pages are the
similar ( except for their content).

I think Martin, you have somewhere files in store named:
hotpot6.css and styles.css. And you link one or the other whenever
you need one. Your pages will therefore have the same design and
you have to make this design only once.

So far so good?

I can read in documentation ( there is lots about it on the internet
and in bookstores !! ) what one can put in a style sheet. And what
should be kept as html. I even think, I understand the content of
our hp6.cs_  file.

But when I try to find something like <link rel="stylesheet" type
….. in the Source files of hot potatoes, in the .ht_ files I
only see this:

<style type="text/css">

[strStyleSheet]

</style>

as far as it comes to CSS things.
And as a matter of fact, I don't know what to do.
I would be very happy by some tutorial here. Thanks beforehand.

Hi Henny,
Thank you for the advice. I'll try it out as you suggest.
I liked the Little Red Ridinghood story, a good idea for children to
understand story telling.

The Windows Media player doesn't work well for me. I use a Mac. It
opens another window in the browser, so you have to use the back button
to get the original page back. Even on the PC it is not reliable,
particularly if you use browsers other than IE.

Thanks again, Henny.

Cheers,
Liz

<a id="TheId"></a>

Any element at all in XHTML can have an id attribute, and any element
can be linked to using:

page.htm#TheId

There's no need to use empty anchors any more.

Cheers,
Martin
