Hi Annelies,

first of all "dank u" for appreciating my work.

If you need a sample exercise, feel free to use it as you like. It will cost you
only a beer and a raw herring next time I come to Amsterdam... ;-)

Ciao,

Hi all,

I know.... This is not a site for video/dvd enthusiasts, but I'm using Adobe
Encore DVD for an educational purpose, so I hope you'll be lenient...

Is there anyone who is familiar with the program? I want to create dvd of a
video file that has subtitles. But because I want the students to listen to the
voices in the video rather than read the subtitles in their own language, I want
to mask the subtitles, so they cannot be read by the students. Is this something
that can be done in Adobe Encore DVD? Or do I need video editing software for
that?

If any one can help me, I would be much obliged...

Sorry for intruding in an HP users group...

I am trying to make sure that students can't use their browsers autocomplete
function to give them hints when they do exercises more than one time. I was
going to try to edit the source file, but I admit that I am lost as to where to
put this setting. My intention was to add autocomplete="off" to the Input text
field for short answer questions. How can I build this into the template so
that my faculty can create exercises without me having to adjust them?

Thank you, and sorry if this is a silly question.

Hi there!
I've just downloaded the beta version for Mac OS X, I created a crossword and a
multiple choice, but I can't open the files to modify them.
When it asks me to choose a default application to open my .jcw and .jmt files,
I try with Java Hot Potatoes, but I can't open anything.

Maybe I make mistakes: can anyone help me?

Thank you in advance!

Hi,

Its impossible to open a Hot Potatoes file via the finder and then choose the
option "Open with". All it does then is open the application
"JavaHotPotatoes6.app".
You'll have the pick the right Potatoe and then klick in the left upper corner
the folder icon or press Command + O to open your Hot Potatoes file.

Cheers,

Hi,

Does anybody have a suggestion? In my continuing quest to make my quizzes
friendly for non-readers, I need to replace the "check answer" caption with a
non written prompt. I thought a tick and a cross would be the most suitable
alternative. This caption does not allow an image to be inserted. I am hoping
to use Moodle but unfortunately it does not read my Unicode tick and cross in
Internet Explorer. Might I be able to alter the code to accept an image of a
tick and cross for this button?
Thanks so much in advance.

Guido's right. You need to start JCross first and then use the Open
button or menu item in JCross to select your data file to open. I've
tried a couple of times to implement the code necessary to allow the
correct application to open when you doubleclick on a data file, but
I've never got it to work properly and reliably.

Hi Deborah,

The config screen does allow you to add an image for the Check Answer field. Go
to Buttons, insert your cursor in the Check Answer field and then use the insert
image command.

Kind regards,

Bernard

Hi Bernard
Yes it does allow you to insert an image but the image doesn't come out. I
cannot upload an example as I am having a problem uploading to hotpots.net at
the moment. I will try and resolve and revert.

Hi again,

I would be so grateful if you could have a look at

http://uk1.hotpotatoes.net/ex/39503/HKMSMOKI.php

It is a nonsense exercise as I was having a problem uploading my usual exercises
which are quite heavy on graphics and sound. But you will see that on the
caption option the image doesn't come out. I have tried this many times with
different images. I would be happy to discover I am doing something wrong and
that you can in fact put images in the Check Answer button.

Thank you.

Hi Deborah and Martin and all

I've tried it myself and I get different reactions depending on the
browsers I use:
http://users.prof2000.pt/mfr/test.html

In IE, the image doesn't show up; in Firefox you don't see the image,
only its name; I also tried in Chrome and there the image shows up.
I have no other browsers installed so I don't know how others would
react.
I used the insert image option in Options/configure output/buttons, as
Bernard suggested.
The image is in the server, as you can check here:

Hi Paolo
It works!
I didn't delete the double quotes, I replaced " by " in the gif
name, width and height, because in IE the real size of the image didn't
show up.
For some reason Jmatch changes " into " when you insert an image
in the Check Answer button area

I think there's probably a good reason why it's doing that; perhaps
originally that caption was being put into an attribute value (perhaps
the "value" attribute on a form <input type="button">, before pure HTML
<button> elements were available. I'll look into it.

Martin,

According to my research and a little bit of testing, if you add the attribute
autocomplete="off" to the <Input> tag, then this overrides the browsers settings
of autofill the field.

Think of any place on the web where you are required to enter your email address
a second time for verification, even if your browser is set to autofill fields,
it won't do it on these pages.

Hi Martin and Everyone

The picture doesn't come out in the "check answer" button on my local browser
either. Unicode worked fine on IE but Moodle doesn't like Unicode! HOWever,
Paolo's suggestion of taking off the inverted commas seems to work! The image
shows up. Can't upload to Moodle at moment but hopefully it will work on that
and problem solved! Thanks so much to all who addressed it. Makes a big
difference to my project.

Hi there,

I think autocomplete is an attribute invented by Microsoft, and it's not
part of XHTML, so we couldn't add it to HotPot because it would make the
exercises invalid. There's nothing to stop you adding it yourself, of
course; in fact, you could create an XSLT file to process HotPot pages
and add it automatically to all input elements.

It's in (X)HTML 5, though:

complete-attribute>

Cheers,
Martin

Hi Deborah,

I'm amazed to hear that Moodle has problems with Unicode characters;
that seems to me to be a major Moodle bug, which should be reported. Can
you give me some details of how it fails?

Cheers,
Martin

Hi Martin
The Unicode on the buttons shows up in Moodle when viewed with Firefox, but not
with IE. On the forum they generally agreed that IE is a problem.
Unfortunately I need my quizzes to work on IE as my students won't change over.

Regarding the check answer and OK buttons. Joseph's solution of taking the
inverted commas out of the gifs worked fine on my computer but, alas, not when
uploaded to Moodle. Images on the other buttons work fine in Moodle. You
mentioned it might be to do with those captions being put into an attribute
value that makes them behave differently to the other buttons with regards to
images. I wondered if it would be a difficult thing to make them behave like
the other buttons....?

Thank you so much.

Hi Deborah,

This is why I'd like to see the exercises with Unicode captions in IE --
I'm not sure that IE is the problem here. Could you post an example?

Meanwhile, I'll look into the behaviour of the captions.

Cheers,
Martin

Martin, I am having trouble uploading anything to HPnet at the moment. I will
revert and then post the exercises.
Thank you.

Hi,
Here is my problem:

- To create a working HTML file on my computer's browser which shows images in
the "OK" and "Check answer" caption buttons, I need to remove the inverted
commas around the image names. I.e. "cat.gif" needs to be cat.gif.

- But for the images to show up in Moodle, the inverted commas need to be
present in the jtm.

- Because I am using customized source files in some of my exercises, Moodle
needs also to see the HTML file to read the customisation. But it needs the
jtm. file too. It won't work with only the HTML file. I tried making an HTML
without the inverted commas, then taking them out of the jtm. and sending both
to Moodle, but the images didn't come out.

I am so sorry to be hammering this point but I feel it is key to the success of
my project.

Is there a solution?

Hi Deborah,

I'm aware of the problem and I'm looking at a solution. I can't really
rush out a change to Hot Potatoes for the sake of one user, without
making sure the change is not going to cause unplanned side-effects.

You still haven't managed to demonstrate that the Unicode characters
fail in Moodle; if they do, then that's a bug in Moodle, so you could be
chasing them too, but it would be good to see an example of how that
happens.

Cheers,
Martin

Actually, I've just done some testing, and a simple temporary solution
would be to use the standard output format instead of drag-drop; that
works fine.

Martin
