Abstract
A current and significant challenge in the design and implementation
of health information technology (HIT) is to deal with the high
failure rate of HIT projects. A large number of HIT projects fail.
Most of these failures are not due to flawed technology, but rather
due to the lack of systematic considerations of human and other non-
technology issues in the design and implementation processes. In
other words, designing and implementing HIT is not so much an IT
project as a human project about human-centered computing such as
human-computer interaction, workflow, organizational change, and
process reengineering. Due to the complexity and unique features of
healthcare, human-centered methods and techniques specifically
developed for healthcare are necessary for the successful
development of health information systems that would increase
efficiency and productivity, increase ease of use and ease of
learning, increase user adoption, retention, and satisfaction, and
decrease medical errors, decrease development time and cost, and
decrease support and training cost. In this talk we will present one
such method that is specifically developed for Electronic Health
Records (EHR) systems.
Speaker Bio:
Jiajie Zhang is the Dr. Doris L. Ross Professor and the Associate
Dean for Research in the School of Health Information Sciences at
University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. Jiajie Zhang
obtained his PhD in Cognitive Science with a specialization in Human-
Computer Interaction from the University of California at San Diego.
He was a faculty member in the Department of Psychology at The Ohio
State University before he joined the School of Health Information
Sciences at University of Texas at Houston. Dr.Zhang's primary
research interest is in human-centered computing in complex domains,
such as biomedical and health information systems and
devices, graphic representations, Naval Aegis system, displays for
the International Space Station, and instrument displays in
aviation. His other research interests include team work and human
errors. Dr. Zhang is an elected Fellow of American College of
Medical Informatics. He is also a member of American
Medical Informatics Association, ACM-SIGCHI, Human Factors
Society,Cognitive Science Society, and Psychonomic Society.
Location, Directions and Parking:
University Center Tower
7000 Fannin
Room 1412
Directions: Park in the garage, take elevator down to 1st floor, and
then switch to a building elevator to get to the 14th floor. No
escort is necessary. If entering from the front entry, rather than
the garage entrance (e.g. if you arrive via light rail), you need to
tell the information desk personnel/security guard that you are
going to a meeting at School of Health Information Sciences.
