Greetings everyone!
Just discovered this group today! I am 45 years old, and my first
experiences with computers were on the HP2000 timeshare systems back
in the early 70's. I used to sneak into the high school computer lab
when I was still in junior high. By the time I became a freshman, I
was already an expert in programming using Basic. During my high
school years, I was even allowed to take home a Teletype machine
w/acoustic coupler during Christmas Vacation. I miss those days. Does
anybody know where I can get an emulator for the HP2000?? Thanks :-)

It's a small world! I used to go to Rolling Meadows HS and had a good friend
who went to BGHS (Barry Bine).

Guess we used the same hp2000 ("Logon D214 Access Basic......").

I sure wish I had some kind of dump tape from that old system..I did get to
visit it in person a couple of times (in the admin building next to Prospect
HS).

WOW!! I visited it also!! I would LOVE to find an emulated version of that system. I even got in "trouble" for writing a small program that displayed locally tidbits of what users on the other ports were doing and in doing so caused the system to crash. I was called into the principals office to "discuss" my program with officials from HP. Turned out I discovered a system flaw. I'm still amazed at how far computing as come since then!!

I would like to welcome you all to my little emulated hp2000 system.

You access it thusly:

telnet mickey.ath.cx

Do ctl-J,ctl-M until you get the 2nd login prompt, then:

 Hel-t001,hp2000,1

Then, you’re in.  Do a gro to see a bunch of games.  Do a lib to see a bunch of contributed programs.

Exe-$ to run from the library (or get-$ and run)….exe-* to run stuff from the group.

Feel free to put stuff in t001’s own catalog.

I have plans to put up more goodies, but this is, at ,least, a start.

I keep the system up 24x7 normally…it’s ups protected and I plan to run regular backups.  If you have stuff you’d like to upload, feel free.

If you want a private account, let me know..I’m more than willing to set them up.

Be sure to log off when done.

Enjoy!

This is using SIMH, using libraries provided to me by Mike Gemeny.

I do have some more goodies to load..this is just a starting place.

If any of you have tapes that might have goodies on them, please let me
know. I do have access to a 9-track (round) tape-drive and have software to
recover old hp2000 hibernate/sleep/dump tapes.

Hi Bob,

Nice! Is this the TSB package from Steve using Bob's SIMH?
Just wondering if you have additional library files beyond what
is in Steve's archive.

I also tried to upload a short program but there appears to be
a flow control problem -- lots of dropped characters.

Cheers,

Dan

Even locally I've had to make some adjustments to make uploading work. The
method that I've used is to, once the source to upload is on my pc's hard
drive, use hyperterm to send it..but configure hypterterm to put in pauses
after each character and after each line...I don't recall how many...I just
put in a bunch of pauses...started the upload..then went to do something
else (nothing like dropping characters in the middle of a 1000+ line
program).

Anyway..with the pauses, I got flawless uploads.

A couple of things I forgot to mention:

Try:  exe-1note.x300  (a wonderful tool for sending/receiving messages—not internet enabled..just within my hp2000 system)

Exe-castle.b300 (hide-and-seek….make rooms, explore rooms, make, take and move items…and play hide-and-seek (and exchange messages) with other users.

Bob - What's happening is the 2000 Access isn't loaded just the Simh
program is. He is trying to get Simh loaded with 2000 aceess.

Ralph - you don't have all the required software to load access for
yourself. I don't believe this has been made available.

What would you like for your password?

Yes, startrek is loaded (exe-strtrk.t000) and

Adventure (exe-advent.t000).

Unfortunetly, adventure is only working from a T0 account (it’s got some dependencies on group pathing for now)..so you can

Run star trek from your new h805, but you’ll, for now at least, need to log onto the shared t001 to run advent (exe-*advent).

Just let me know what you want for your h805 pwd.

Bob,

It's great to see your open system up and running!

What disks are we running and how many of them? With the new SIMH we
should be able to run up to 8 of the 7920s. That was a 50 Meg drive
but Access could only address 32 Meg per drive. But a quarter of a
Gig in 1978 was unheard of.

Which library is this? Is it from Patti, one of your systems, or some
mix?

Would you be willing to give us access to a version of ROSTER? I
should have the GMU version, and you should already have my version.
Mine is safer than the GMU version but clumsy to use. The GMU version
is slick and clean but must be properly protected or it could be
reworked into an account jumper.

What is our host CPU speed?

I did notice that we still have the MUX problems. Here's what they
look like and how to work around them. You do the ^J ^M ^J ^M and get
PLEASE LOG IN, as you start to type you get no echo, Solution: do the
^J ^M ^J ^M again. The second PLEASE LOG IN always works.

Problem two, telnet attaches and you get the SIMH banner but cannot
get a PLEASE LOG IN from Access. Solution: launch a second or third
telnet to the simulation, ^J ^M ^J ^M on the second or third session.
You will often see a single LF on the hung port, then the ^J ^M ^J ^M
on the previously hung port will get you the PLEASE LOG IN and the
hung port is fixed.

The last time I talked to Dave Bryan we was considering a more
through look at the MUX code. If he takes on that project I have no
doubt that these problems will be gone.

I need to get back to reading tapes for you guys. Fell free to twist
my arm on that.

Keep us posted,

Mike

2 2883 drives. (what would that capacity be)?

Which library is this? Is it from Patti, one of your systems, or some
mix?

A mix…..lib and t000 from patti,

X300,b300, r500 and p300 with some stuff from the old District 214 high school system (Chicago suburbs)…my original system…I don’t have a tape from this system but saved some programs and files to apple // disk (and even trs-80 cassette)..I’ve pulled some stuff back from both media.

It also has kingdm and some other things from the Harper/D211 system.

Would you be willing to give us access to a version of ROSTER? I

Mine is safer than the GMU version but clumsy to use. The GMU version

Sure…Where is your version (I remember it but don’t remember where it is).  I do want to keep my system secure and safe, so yours sounds better.

What is our host CPU speed?

Pentium-2 300mhz.  (actually, the laptop that it’s running on is ALSO emulating an ibm mainframe (running the Hercules mainframe emulator running IBM VM).

(one little laptop, emulating an entire datacenter…ibm mainframe AND hp2000)…cool, eh?

It seems like the performance is similar to what a real hp2000 might do.

Do you need my help with any tape reading?  I do have access to a 9-track drive and the s/w to get at the files?

Keep us posted,

Thanks for getting us started!

(I will occasionally take the system down for a few minutes to do a fresh HIB b/u)…if it’s ever down, expect it back up shortly).
