Unfortunately that paper will not work on the HPB9180 as it is a
'swellable' paper similar to the Ilford Classic series. Worked great
on my Canon i9900 (Dye Ink) but won't work at all for your B9180. Lots
of threads on Dpreview.com on papers to use with this printer. It
seems that as of now the best results are being obtained with the HP
Advanced papers, but others are being tested and results reported on.

Whenever I try to add custom papers I wind up with a dialog box that
says that the printer is set up to use the printer setup utility but
the button to launch the utility is greyed out. Are there any Mac
users out there that can tell me how to add custom papers?
Thanks in advance for any assistance...

Early experiences printing from Aperture 1.5
First print using HP Advanced Photo Soft Gloss profile in both Aperture's dialog
and in the
Printer Settings dialog: Color and detail are very good, but some banding,
pooling and a
weird rectangular "shadow" effect in the gloss. Noticeable up close but not from
a few feet
away.
Second print, selected HP Advanced Photo Satin-Matte profiles in both dialogs
and moved the
INK slider all the way left to LIGHT. Resulted in no banding, no pooling, not as
deep blacks
and a slight magenta shift.

I have the same problem with Lightroom, I get good a good match with
PSP/X and PSCS but very odd results from Lightroom.
I suspect it may be something to do with the fact that Lightroom is
still a Beta?

Thanks for the tip. I'll give it a try.
Right now I am rebuilding the Library because Aperture 1.5 is pulling a rather
disconcerting *disappearing act* whenever I click on a large project.
I have tried printing from all three apps with mixed results. The worst was Lightroom and I suspect that I had something set incorrectly. With all the apps I set the paper profile within the application and set the driver to application managed color, is this the correct/best way to set the profile or should I set the profile in the driver?

I use the Application Managed Colors option to get good results
from Aperture. Set the printer driver's Color menu to
Application Managed Colors, ensure the the correct media type is
selected, and set the appropriate ICC profile in
the ColorSync Profile menu.

I was at Costco yesterday and grabbed a pack of the Kirkland Pro Glossy Ink jet Paper. It says it is compatible with all ink jet printers but I imagine it is compatible with all dye based printers. Anyway, I had seen mention of this paper being used in the 2400 with good results so I thought I would give it a try. At $14.00 for 150 8x10 sheets I thought it was worth a shot. Cheap way for me to experiment and learn about the printer without wasting expensive paper. :-)
It is a long shot, but has anyone else tried this paper? Any suggestions on which profile to start with?
That's great news. I'll give it a shot when the printer comes on
Monday. When you say printer settings, do you configure that through
Print Utility in OS X? Have you tried with Application Managed and
Adobe RGB 1998? My understanding is that Adobe should give more color
range than sRGB but I'm a complete color newbie.

I printed out a book last night and found that the combination of using the HP
Advanced
Glossy Profile both in Aperture's Print dialog AND in Printer settings (along
with selecting
ColorMatch/sRGB yielded excellent results on HP Advanced Glossy paper.
The dullness I'd seen earlier may have been from selecting System Managed color
OR from
selecting Adobe RGB 1998 or both.
HTH.
Give it a couple weeks. I and everyone else seems to have had this
issue. It'll clear up shortly. As long as the prints look good don't
worry about it. And, don't waste any ink cleaning the heads unless the
printer directs you to do so....
Hope this helps -- Frag

I'm new to all of this and so my experience is minimal, but I've definitely
found that printing
from Aperture and using the HP print center in CS2 yield wildly different
results.
Prints out of Aperture at the default settings are dark and drab compared to the
calibrated
screen. Prints from CS2 are far better but a bit lighter than what I see on
screen.
I need a primer on profiling which is why I joined this group.
Fair is supposed to indicate that there is some maintenance due on the
print head. Probably a couple of clogged nozzles. If your prints are
still printing fine I wouldn't worry about it.
They couldn't possibly put text there to indicate what you're looking at.
Hell of a way to run a railroad.

I set up an HP B9180 on Monday. From the start the PK / LG printhead
had the status "fair". The other printheads were good. Today the LC /
LM printhead also has the status "fair".
Is this normal? Has anybody else experienced this? I've read on
dpreview.com that in other cases the printheads went from fair to good
after a while. Should I wait or report to HP support.

what you think about their papers ?

Hi All:
My first post. I fear I will not have too much to share for awhile as
the B9180 is my first printer. Mostly Qs from me for a few days most
likely.
My printer arrived today but it is not out of the box yet.

Sorry if this double posts ....
I've printed a B&W on Crane's Silver Rag – used HP Advanced Soft Gloss as the
paper type and
chose B&W in the plug-in color management area. The blacks were really deep and
rich with
great detail in both shadows and highlights. The paper is pricey but the result
was stunning.

I printed a B&W on Crane's Silver Rag – used HP Advanced Soft Gloss as paper

fantastic. Pricey
paper but it looked stunning.

I am getting fantastic results using the Hahnemuhle Fine Art Smooth
with the built-in profile, but for times when I want to print a B&W
landscape with really deep blacks, this paper doesn't really work. I
have the HP Advanced Glossy and Semi-Gloss, and have tried composite
B&W inks in the driver, but I am not thrilled with these either. Any
suggestions?
Thanks,

This months issue of Shutterbug found its way into my mailbox a couple days ago. I have not had a chance to read it yet but I did notice this morning that there is a review of the B9180. Thought it might be of some interest.....
Finally, after months of waiting my printer has finally arrived. I have a bunch of sample pack paper and look forward to experimenting with the new inks and paper. :-)
Very interesting interview. Wilhelm talks not only about permanence (for which he is widely regarded) but also some of the history of printmaking and what the new pigment printers mean to photography in general. Well worth the time to watch. :-)
I have added links to the 9180 reviews at Luminous Landscape, InkjetArt and Neil Snape. If there are any other links or resources that would be of value to the members please feel free to add/post them.
My order is still showing a delivery date of no later than Oct. 2nd. I will believe that when I see it! I did send an email today to Amazon to try and get some more info but I have not heard back from them yet.
I read your weblog, looks like you have done a fair amount of printing with the 9180. Are there any papers that stand out from the ones you have tried? I orderd the HP advanced glossy and semi-gloss (both are reportedly very good) and a couple of sample packs from Red Rvier. I am dissappointed to see that there are no immediate plans at Red River to profile the 9180.
One thing that would be very useful is if we could create a repository of profiles in the yahoo group files section. I assume that the profile from inkjetart can be made available for download since it is free, would you be interested in adding it? As the group moves forward and paper and profile combos discovered it would be nice to have a one stop shop for profiles. :-)
One last thing, from what you have seen so far are you pleased with your purchase?

I did just that, Amazon told me (after the shipping window had passed)
"we don't have them, we don't know when we're going to get them".
However, HP is also now out of stock. The current magic date making the
rumor rounds is Oct 6th.
I got my B9180 on Tuesday, you can read all about my experiences so far

I have the printer on order from Amazon but it has not shipped yet. If it were not for the price ($569.00 with free shipping) I would cancel and order from HP direct. From the reports I have heard the orders from HP are being filled in a timely fashion.
