Subject: Hefger media doubled their ink prices?

My yellow cartridge just ran out of ink and was ready to buy a set of
Hefger inks, only to see that they've doubled their prices. The sets
that used to come with 100ml bottles of ink now have 50ml bottles.
This raises prices to about 50% of what HP is asking for. I'm
saddened, and I guess I'll just keep buying HP now. If ink was the
*only* cost then 50% less is still worth it, but there is paper,
printer amortization, and most importantly, my time spent wondering if
I'll regret using third party ink 10 years from now.

Does anyone know why they've done this? It's actually pretty sneaky -
the prices stayed the same, but the size of the bottles dropped by
half. Even the pictures on their website still show 100ml bottles in
with the $270 set of cartridges+ink. (and didn't the cartridges come
pre-filled before?)

Hi Daniel:

I have not tested Windows 7, but have you tried to Save the settings
in the driver? That may help the settings to hold.

All the best,

I was afraid this was happen when I upgraded to Windows 7. I have been using
this printer for 18 months, doing quite a lot of printing in both photoshop and
lightroom. Lightroom in particular has been a breeze, and my results have been
tremendous. But on upgrading the OS and installing the new Win7 printer driver,
I'm totally dead in the water.

Here's what's happening. I set the printer properties the way I have for 18
months -- select paper size and type in the 3rd tab, select "Application
Managed" for color management in the 4th tab. Print preview in Lightroom shows
the normal 1/4" border, but when I print, the image is expanded to exactly
borderless width, and the colors are way off. It appears that the driver is
automatically selecting the first of the "printing shortcuts" on the second tab,
which is borderless and with sRGB color management. I can set it on the 3rd and
4th tabs, go to print, re-open the printer properties, and it always opens on
the second tab, with "Photo Printing Borderless" highlighted and the color set
to sRGB. clicking on the 4th tab shows the color set at sRGB.

I remember reading this happening to someone on this group a year or so ago, and
the advice was to uninstall and reinstall the drivers. I tried this rebooted
everything, etc., and no dice. This is quite frustrating, of course. Any
suggestions?

Jean, thanks for the information. This is not something I'd have thought to
try: your fix is another approach when the printer appears broken.

Ah. I once spent 3 days getting a friend's WRT54G to behave itself. Not a
current version, this was about 2yrs ago, however it kept dropping PC's
off the network. The firmware was only part of the problem, as were a
couple of poor quality cables, but I'm now unsure what it took to finally
persuade it to work reliably. I *think* it was dumping and uninstalling
the Linksys software and using XP's native Windows Zero Config wireless
stuff instead. Anyhow, it has behaved impeccably ever since.

I just built a new PC (i7 860, 8Gb ram, win7 64, etc) and almost all of my
applications work well with the 9180 (capture nx 2, lightroom 2, and qimage).
But when I try to print from PSE8 (which I just bought) the latter software
crashes. Consistently.

Anyone have any familiarity with this problem?

how about extra virgin olive oil?

no really, this is an interesting thread.  the inside of my printer is really a
mess but continues to churn out really nice prints - far better than my last
epson 2200.  wish the internals were a little bit easier to self maintain -
like you could remove the waste ink tank and replace or clean just as easily as
a print head or ink cart.

I just started using Tri-Flow. It's the
spray and all it says on the label is "Tri-Flow"
contains aliphatic hydrocarbons and PTFE(fluorocarbon) .
Spray a small amount on a Q-tip, wipe the rail and then
wipe the rail again with a lint-free cloth or tissue.

I assumed that it wouldn't hurt the polymer carriage
but I don't know that for sure. Time will tell.

Aliphatic hydrocarbons are compatible with nylon, and
delrin(polyoxymethy lene,POM) but not LDPE, polycarbonate or PVC.
I'm not sure what the carriage material is. Maybe I should
find out. ;-)

Thanx again Jeff :)

I would've considered the 3rd-pparty firmware, but my Linksys WRT54G is a
version 8, for which there aren't many alternate firmwares and instead requires
the "lite" version of DD-WRT. I wish I understood these better, and I'm
reluctant to simply purchase another without know what to look for.

cheerios :)

dd-wrt has a daily reboot cycle. But installation is not for the faint of heart.

I love this printer. It DOES use a lot of ink for auto purge. There are some
routine mainenance items that must be done regularly which will reduce the ink
usage. Still
the jury is still out for me on this printer. At least it always prints when I
need it. I
couldn't say that about my previous Epson.

1) align the heads- if you don't do this fairly often it will use more ink in
its' auto purge cycle. Align them after changing an ink cartridge and a number
of times between changes.
2) clean the NEDD(outside and in the slit)- not only if it doesn't pass the test
cycle.
you want to keep it clean so that it never fails the test.
3) keep the sponges clean or at least not floating in ink.
Obviously, that purge ink has to go somewhere.

I have found that those foam paint sticks(about 3/4" wide) are the greatest for
cleaning the NEDD AND the sponges(one for each sponge and one for the NEDD). I
fill a 2 quart plastic yogurt container with water and wash each sponge out
after soaking up the ink. Then I blot it between two sheets of paper towel
folded over two or three times until most of the water is out of it. I change
the water multiple times for each color. The taper on the sponge will get down
into the slit on the NEDD. I used to use q-tips but I just tried the foam paint
sticks and they worked great- much better than Q-tips.

I just had a NEDD go from Functional FIBRE to GOOD after cleaning with the paint
stick. I was also able to soak up tons
of ink out of the purge sponges.

The nozzle check went from 199 failed to 25.

It also doesn't hurt to clean the carriage rail and very very lightly lubricate
it with Tri-FLo.

All that said the printer is using about 2% per week for auto purge
or about a set of cartridges per year with no printing.

The alignment uses about 1% of most of the cartridges.

Hi all,

I'm writing here what happened to me as it might be helpful for others :
after un unfruitful attempt (never ending) to install the last firmware upgrade,
my printer systematically asked for a close loop calibration that systematically
failed due to horrible paper jams. I unplugged the printer several times wasted
a lot of ink and paper with all kind of tests and finally contacted french HP

No reparation even for those who are ready to pay for it !
I finally got rid of the problem as follows : plugged the printer another time

Conclusion : never trust HP Support.

I'm trying to run a closed loop calibration for my B9180 with my Mac Pro (using

No but I recommend running the wizard to "Add a device" on the start menu. Run
that after you make the changes and it should find your printer, then let it do
the install. If you wind up with extra copies in your printers folder, delete
the old one. You might also wind up with extra ports but that should be
harmless.

Which Linksys router are you running? I have had issues with various routers and
the printer, Linksys and Netgear. I believe the static IP solved that problem
however I am now running dd-wrt firmware instead of the Linksys version which
would drop my performance from full-speed (30Mbps) on the WAN side down to just
1 Mbps in a few hours and it would recover only if I reset the router. dd-wrt

Regarding why I need to reset my router ... I wish I knew! But my downstairs
HTPC, which is connected via wifi and static IP, sometimes gets its connection
dropped. Repairing the connection or re-booting the computer does not work ...
only resetting the router works. The Linksys router has the most recent
firmware.

cheerios :)

Well, um, why do you reset your router? It shouldn't need it except very
rarely, and if it is falling over frequently the first thing you probably
want to do is check for firmware upgrades with the router mfr's site.
Unfortunately most (Netgear, Dlink, Zyxel, Belkin etc) sell with immature
firmware and only complete development after months of complaints from the
public condemned to beta-test the damned things.

What's probably happening is that the printer is not renewing its DHCP
lease after the router is restarted. You could try leaving the router off
for several minutes before powering it up again, to give the printer a
chance to notice. Or set a static IP in the printer config so DHCP isn't a
factor.

Thanks Jeff :)

Did you find, having changed it over to static IP and DNS, that you needed to
re-install the printer or driver software? I ask because the HP support had me
re-install everything to get the communications back (... altho I'm now finding
that I only need to reset the printer).

cheerios :)

Excellent. Pretty complicated machine when you think about it. This is the
first printer I've owned that is of photoshop quality. Lots to learn I
guess. Makes me thank my lucky stars I stumbled across this group.

Thanks!

That would be it. The calibration has to be done with the hp advanced
glossy paper. It knows the way the ink looks on this paper and
calibrates accordingly. If you calibrate with another paper it would
skew everything. The hp advanced papers actually have a barcode on the
back the printer can read. That's why it fails with that error.

Always keep some of the hp advanced glossy around for calibrations.
You can get it at most stores like wallmart, office max ect.

Good luck,

Are you using HP Advanced Glossy Photo Paper for your calibration?

If not, you need to.

That's my configuration and I had that problem for awhile. What I did
was assign a static IP address to the printer and not use DHCP for it.

To do this go into the printer's web page (http://<ip <http://>
address>), click on the Networking Tab, then click on the Wired (802.3)
tab on the left.

Select Manual IP Address and give it the same address, subnet mask
255.255.255.0, and Manual Default Gateway 192.168.1.1, then click on
Manual DNS and type in 192.168.1.1. This assumes you are using the
default router subnet.

Now you want to do one of the following on the router: reserve that IP
address for the printer's MAC address or change the DHCP address range
to not include the printer's IP. For example, on my printer I use
192.168.1.8 and the DHCP address range is set to
192.168.1.10-192.168.1.59.

To make sure you are using the right IP address, check the port created
for your printer. You can get this from the printer properties (not sure
if you have a Mac or a PC). On a PC like at the Printer Properties for
your printer, select Ports and see what is checked. The IP address
should be embedded in the name.

I'm experiencing an issue I can't seem to resolve. I've replaced 4 of the 8

times now and each time it has failed with the following error: closed loop
calibration failed - media type mismatch. The replacement cartridges are

Any thoughts?

Like Brian, I've also had a printer replaced for this error. I'm assuming your
printer is actually picking up paper from the tray before generating the error.
If not, it may be a simple mechanical issue with the paper feeder mechanism.

Before you get too discouraged, I suggest you do a hard reboot of the printer
(Turn off, unplug all cables, let it sit unplugged for some time, reboot the
computer while you are at it). Plug in the power, but not the USB/network
cable, and, after the printer initializes, try printing a test page from the
front panel buttons. If it prints the test page, the printer hardware is
probably OK. If you get the out of paper error with the test page, the printer
is probably broken. I don't know if there is a diy fix for sensors, though
printing from the Special Media Tray might be a work-around.

Good luck.

I'm wondering if someone has found a remedy for making the wifi connection to
the B9180 more dependable(?) That is, whenever I reset my router (2-3
times/week) my printer somehow loses the connection. The funny thing is that
the printer will correctly show its IP ... I'm able to ping it from all

The only way to get it back is to pull the printer's plug, wait a minute, and

I note that the URL interface includes a "Networking" tab, as well as a method
for configuring for acquiring a static IP, as well as setting static DNS. Has
anyone tried these settings, as if it may make a difference?

Sadly, yes. I had exactly the same problem with a 2 year old B9180, but I
did have a 3 year warranty, and ultimately after going through all the usual
hoops HP sent me a replacement printer. I'm sure its just a
microswitch/sensor problem, but I couldn't identify where the relevant
sensor was located, or whether it could be replaced d-i-y.

I've had a 9180 for several years with out any issues until now. Last night I
went to print from Qimage like I noramlly do, and the printer fed 2 sheets of
paper out from the main tray then stopped in the process of feeding a 3rd sheet
and said the printer was out of paper, even though there was plenty in the tray.

I've never had this issue before, it always printed first time through any
application I used on the first sheet.

I've tried printing in all applications that I have CS3, Qimage, even straight
from windows and it does the same thing every time. Has anyone had similar
issues? I'm at a loss as to what's changed since nothing has. Once day it prints
fine the next it won't do anything but cycle paper.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
J
