Hi Group,

I need the A4A7 module for my HP 8568B IF/Display section. I'm also looking
for a source of the firmware for the 85662A. My 85662A is a H96 Mod version
which doesn't have the 10Hz filter. BTW, I have a list of the changes for the
8568B E44 version. Please email me off list and I will forward a copy. Let me
know if you want text or Word format.

Hello

I need some help on an HP8756A.
I have the error code 15 (1-1-1-1) on A3 CPU after power on.
I use signature multimeter HP 5005A and all the signatures are correct
except these from D0 to D15.
Does somebody have the contents of A3U9 (08756-80021) A3U29 (08756-80023)
A3U10 (08756-80022)and A3U30 (0876-80024)?

Thanks

I do not have the machine here right now, but 5 years ago I made
backups of the EPROMs mounted in sockets contained in my 8756A.
Maybe I can find them...

Are the circuits you mention EPROMs?

    Regards,

      Erik.

I bought this thing on ebay had a bad fuse for the CRT supply. I Love
this thing! Anyway I think I have two problems.
When I hook up the 100MHZ test signal I get a reasponse at 100MHZ then
about five or six consecutive ones each spaced a 100MHz apart, going
up the scale in desending amplitude. Am I seeing harmonics? Is this
normal?
If not how to troubleshoot, I found where the signal comes from.
The second problem I have is when in the lowest band I have a blip at
about 3MHZ, and dont like it there, even with the input shorted. If I
disconnect the A30 First Mixer output the thing disappears, If I
disconnect the A30 attenuator input, the path to the main input
connector its still there, If I unplug the A20 bias board its still
there, tried unplugging A18 Yig driver and loose sweep so dont know if
its there or not, but it seams to be coming somewhere thru A31 Yig
tuned osc.
Any ideas would gladly be appreciated, Im not repairing this to make
money, wana use it for myself.
Please help, thanks in advance.

You do realize that nothing is perfect, and all spectrum analyzers
have a few spurious responses, don't you? What's important is the
LEVEL of those spurious responses.

Often, you can determine if a given displayed signal is a spur or not
by adjusting the input attenuator or terminating the input. If the
signal remains, it's either leakage or a spur.

Leakage around the 88 to 108 MHz range, from FM broadcast radio
sources, is VERY common and hard to eradicate entirely unless you
convert your lab to a fully shielded Faraday enclosure. And this
leakage can be the root cause for a lot of spurs and harmonics that
you may see in your analyzer.

I would suggest you start by getting the manual for your analyzer and
start reviewing the specifications for it. It'll have a listing for
acceptable spur levels in different bands. If your analyzer meets
published specs, there's really nothing you can do, but be happy
that you got a machine that meets its specs.

The 100 MHz source on your analyzer probably DOES generate a few
harmonics. Don't worry about it. It still does the job it's there for.

My own analyzer is a Tektronix 492. I was a bit concerned over the
few spurs I've found in its response, until I analyzed the level of
them. Barely any of them are more than 10 dB above the noise floor,
giving me PLENTY of valid measurement range even in a worst case
scenario, since this unit measures down to -123 dBM at zero span.

Now, if your spurs are way up, say, up to -30 dBM, then I'd say
you've got some problems that need looking into. I'd worry about any
analyzer that can't go to -80 dBM without spurs. I can't use one
that does that, not for on-the-air RF monitoring. If you have
problems like that, consult the manual. HP's manuals tend to be
exhaustively detailed and with time, you'll be able to do every
performance check and diagnostic you'll need to do, and run through
the calibration procedure as well, to the limits of the accuracy of
your sources.

I recommend that every serious hobbyist should have access to a
calibrated frequency counter, calibrated voltmeter, and calibrated
level signal source. Using these items, you can derive a very
close calibration for the remainder of your equipment.

I do have those items. So I don't have to spend large amounts of
money to get everything ELSE professionally calibrated.

The 30MHz calibrator output on the 8553B from the 141T system
was intentionally rough to give you a series of markers to
calibrate to.

The large response at 3 MHz may actually be the zero Hz response that
all analyzers provide. It would not be unusual (probably even in spec)
to be off by 3 MHz on this analyzer. Try to apply a 0dBm or so signal at
1 MHz and see where it falls.

I'm always impressed by brave souls who buy kilobuck+ instruments and open
the cabinet to "fix" them before opening the manual. Wish I had that kind
of nerve. :)

Essentialy all spectrum analyzers have a spike at 0 Hz where the LO is equal
to the IF. Any good introductory app note on spectrum analysis will talk
about that, for example page 15 of this one:
http://www.home.agilent.com/agilent/editorial.jspx?cc=US&lc=eng&ckey=459160&
id=459160

Your spike may appear to be at 3 MHz, but that's just the 8565A's
tuning-accuracy spec at work.

The 8565A operating manual is a free download from Agilent:
http://cp.literature.agilent.com/litweb/pdf/08565-99001.pdf (3 MB)

Unfortunately it's a pretty low-quality scan -- the calibrator screenshot I
was going to refer you to is blank! -- but what you'll find with many of
these analyzers is that the calibrator is actually a comb generator. The
harmonics are normal, and give you a sanity check on the analyzer's
span-width calibration.

Have the 1980A manual, and trying to use the scope on GPIB. Basic
scope works fine, and on GPIB. Need the programming codes for the
1950A (ch 3& 4) and the 19860A digital storage module. Been going
nutty trying associated codes to address these options, but no luck. A
few pages of program codes on these two options would earn eternal

"If all else fails, Read the manual" - A lot of repair problems can be fixed
without knowing the details of how the circuit works. Your eyes, nose, [and
other senses - ESP perhaps] and the experience to know where problems are likely
to occur, are often a quicker way to solve the problem, than delving into
complex circuit theory. For example : electrolytic capacitors are often a source
of trouble, which you can sometimes spot by *noticing* that the heatshrink
tubing over a defective one has shrunk too much due to overheating, or
electrolyte has leaked out. This isn`t design, but rather servicing. I`ve never
been able to find many books on this topic, but it`s a very handy skill to have,
and like most things [like death, I suppose], it will come with time.
Cheers!........................................................Don C.

I don't think there is anything wrong with it! I have a 8569B which is very
similar. It has several spurs below 10MHz and always has. The 100MHz cal signal
is supposed to be rich in harmonics because the frequency display is only
approximate (not synthesized), use the 100MHz harmonics to calibrate the
frequency display in the vicinity of a signal you are interested in and it will
be fairly accurate. There was an option to extend the frequency of these
harminics well up into the microwave region.

about five or six consecutive ones each spaced a 100MHz apart, going

If not how to troubleshoot, I found where the signal comes from.
The second problem I have is when in the lowest band I have a blip at
about 3MHZ, and dont like it there, even with the input shorted. If I
disconnect the A30 First Mixer output the thing disappears, If I
disconnect the A30 attenuator input, the path to the main input
connector its still there, If I unplug the A20 bias board its still
there, tried unplugging A18 Yig driver and loose sweep so dont know if
its there or not, but it seams to be coming somewhere thru A31 Yig

Dear Erik

I received the files of the 4 EPROMs.
My EPROM U9 was wrong: bad CRC.
After programming a new EPROM with the data you have sent to me, the self
test is OK.
Now I have a little problem with the Digital Display 1345A.
The 1345A is not operating properly and I can't calibrate it.
After research, I replace U26 "hp 1NB4-5004 ramp generator) by the same IC
of another 1345A and the display is now good.
Do you know where I can find and buy an 1NB4-5004?

Have the 1980A manual, and trying to use the scope on GPIB. Basic
scope works fine, and on GPIB. Need the programming codes for the
1950A (ch 3& 4) and the 19860A digital storage module. Been going
nutty trying associated codes to address these options, but no luck. A
few pages of program codes on these two options would earn eternal
gratitude.
Thanks,

Spray contact cleaner can be used on the ones that are sticky. The
ones that don't click anymore but still work are OK. Don't worry about
them.

I'm sure you're referring to the type that uses a red plastic frame
which is heat staked to the PC board. To properly replace those,
you'll need a special heat staking tool or a modified soldering iron
tip, and new switch assemblies that may or may not be available from
Agilent.

If they're working, just spray clean them and leave it at that.

If I had a valuable piece of equipment with bad switches, I'd
give serious consideration to retrofitting mini pushbutton switches
of a more common type to the instrument and modifying the original
buttons to work with them. Some model cement and bits of styrene
plastic from the leftovers from a model kit would be very handy in
such a situation.

Sorry, iIts a HP 3314A ~1985 model. Keys are similar to computer keyboard - not
the newer rubber ones.

Are the keys seperable from their mechanism? - I could salvage good mechanisms
from junk equipment but the text on the key would not be same.

John,
With the 11869A adapter, I've used the 86220A, 86222B, and 86290C, as well as
Hughes single- and multi-band mmwave IMPATT sweepers. According to the dip
switch chart on the 11869A, it looks like you can use all of the 8620-series
plug ins. The Hughes plug ins require a special ROM in the 11869A and some
upgrades to the firmware in the 8350B, and an upgraded zener in the 8350B power
supply. I've done that mod to three systems with no problems.
Cheers,
Steve, WB0DBS

Somewhere I saw a compatibility/desirability list but I cannot recall where.
I don't know if all of the 8620 plug-ins work but I remember that later
revision letters sometimes were required to take advantage of some
features/capabilities of the 8350 mainframe.

Steve,
Please, could you be more precise about the compatibility of the 8350B with
the Hughes plug ins : what is the lowest ROM revision acceptable ? Have you
got an idea about the structure of the special rom in the adapter in order
to program one step by step ? What about the modification of the power
supply ? By the way, do you know if the old plug ins for the 8620 equiped
with a 115V main supply plug at the rear (I don't remember the number)are
compatible with the 8350B and 11969A ?

Thanks a lot

Hi John, Steve and others,

I am in kind the same position as John: recently I
acquired an 8350A. I already had a 11869A. On this
adapter (without you can not use 8620 pi's in the
8350) is a list of compatible 8620 pi's. Not all are,
for instance the 8621B multiband pi I have is not
mentioned, I do not dare to try. Other pi's I have
work fine, very nice to have more markers and no need
for scales as compared to a 8620. However, I have a
mechanical problem: the black handle on fi the 86260A
can not be pushed in completely when inserted in the
8350 with the adapter. It does, off course, when
inserted in the 8620. Any comments on this?
Thanks,

Harke, PA0HRK

I don't think you should generate any smoke with any of the 8620 plugins
and the adapter module. As I remember almost everything worked but it's
been a very long time. I was on both the 8620 and 8350 projects.
